#01 - Roneberg's
Slam and six RBI's send Defenders 'Down Under'
Brett Roneberg belted a third-inning grand slam and accounted
for all six Curve runs in a 6-1 win over the Connecticut Defenders
Saturday night at Dodd Stadium
Roneberg's six RBI night marked just the tenth time in Altoona's
eight-year history that player has tallied six or more runs in
a single-game
Teammate Vic Buttler also counted a six-RBI game earlier this
season on May 17th against Reading
The 27-year old Australian touched up Connecticut starter James
Garcia (2-5) for his grand slam, giving the Curve a comfortable
4-0 advantage, which would not be threatened
The grand slam was Roneberg's second of the season
He also went deep with the bases loaded on May 12th v Binghamton
Roneberg capped his huge night with a two-run single in the top
of the seventh to give Altoona's lead plenty of padding at 6-1
#02 - Roneberg delivers six RBI's in 6-1 Altoona victory
over Connecticut
The Connecticut Defenders could not ride their momentum to another
victory, and took a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Altoona Curve
Brett Roneberg knocked in all six runs for Altoona in the winning
effort
The game was scoreless entering the third inning when James Garcia
made a fielding error with one out and two runners on base
An inning ending double play would have likely been the result
had the play been made cleanly, but instead Garcia was left with
one out and the bases loaded
The next batter, clean-up hitter Brett Roneberg took Garcia deep
for a grand slam, giving Altoona a 4-0 lead
The Curve would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh
thanks to Roneberg again
With two outs and the bases loaded, Roneberg had a two run infield
single to make the score 6-1, which would be the final
#03 - Roneberg, Curve down Defenders
Brett Roneberg belted a grand slam and drove in a season-high
six RBI's to lead visiting Altoona over Connecticut, 6-1, on Saturday
Roneberg, whose eighth homer gave the Curve a 4-0 lead in the
third inning, added a two-run single in the seventh
The 27-year-old right-fielder is 15-for-35 with thirteen RBI's
over his last ten games, raising his average from .276 to .293
The performance marked the tenth time in Altoona's eight-year
history that a player has collected six or more RBI's in a game
Most recently, Vic Buttler knocked in six runs against Reading
on May 17, 2006
#04 - Pirates Farm Report
Right fielder Brett Roneberg accounted for all his team's runs,
going 2 for 4 with a grand slam in the third inning
#05 - Roneberg's six RBI's are too much for the Defenders
to handle in loss
The Connecticut Defenders have scored five runs in their last
six games
Brett Roneberg drove in more than that on Saturday night alone
The Altoona right fielder came in hitting .419 in his last nine
games and continued that torrid pace with a pair of hits and all
six RBI in a 6-1 victory for the Curve at Dodd Stadium
Morgan helped set up Roneberg in the third inning as he lofted
a one-out single into short left field
Brian Bixler slapped one hard toward the second base bag that
Connecticut second baseman Derin McMains made a great diving stop
on, but could not get up and make a play
The Curve then loaded the bases when a comebacker to pitcher James
Garcia (2-5) found its way under his glove
That brought up Roneberg, who drilled a shot over the wall in
right for a grand slam
"It was a slider, middle in, and I had seen three of them
in my first at bat" Roneberg said "so I just reacted
to that one and it was in a good hitting spot"
It was the second grand slam of the season for the former Red
Sox farmhand, who had Altoona's first slam of the season on May
12th v Binghamton
"He's a veteran guy who can hurt you," Connecticut manager
Dave Machemer said about the Altoona outfielder
"He can probably hit at a lot higher level than this because
he sure hits here
I've seen the kid for three years - I know he can hit"
Winning pitcher Wardell Starling (3-2) helped his own cause in
the seventh as he slipped a double over Brian Horwitz's head in
right field
Morgan looked as if he would be the second out of the inning,
but his pop behind third base fell in between three Defenders
for a base hit
Bixler walked to load the bases and, one out later, Roneberg slapped
one into short right field that McMains could not make a play
on and two more runs scored
"I was pretty happy looking at the scoreboard tonight and
knowing that I drove them all in" Roneberg said
"It's nice to have a night like that"
#06 - Early Grand Slam Dooms Defenders
Grand slams have a tendency to deflate opposing teams, and when
that opposing team has scored just five runs in their last four
games, the deflation becomes much more apparent
Brett Roneberg hit a grand slam to right field in the third inning,
helping the Altoona Curve to a 6-1 win over the Connecticut Defenders
before 3,140 fans at Dodd Stadium on Saturday night
Roneberg, who won an Olympic Silver Medal as a member of the Australian
national team in 2004, added a two-run single in the seventh and
drove in every Altoona run
I was pretty happy with looking at the scoreboard tonight
and knowing that I drove them all in Roneberg said
It's nice to have a night like that
Roneberg hit a slider that got too much of the plate for the grand
slam
After seeing a few sliders in his first at-bat, Roneberg was sitting
on the pitch
I saw three of them, and I just reacted to that one
Roneberg said
