Game Reports

Brett Roneberg (pictured) belted a third-inning grand slam
and accounted for all six Curve runs in a 6-1 win over the Connecticut Defenders
Saturday night at Dodd Stadium
Roneberg and teammate Vic Buttler
are the only two Curve players to post six-RBI games this season
The Curve and Defenders have now split the first two games
of their rain-shortened three-game series

Roneberg's Slam and six RBI's send Defenders 'Down Under'

Brett Roneberg belted a third-inning grand slam and accounted for all six Curve runs in a 6-1 win over the Connecticut Defenders Saturday night at Dodd Stadium

Roneberg's six RBI night marked just the tenth time in Altoona's eight-year history that player has tallied six or more runs in a single-game

Teammate Vic Buttler also counted a six-RBI game earlier this season on May 17th against Reading

The 27-year old Australian touched up Connecticut starter James Garcia (2-5) for his grand slam, giving the Curve a comfortable 4-0 advantage, which would not be threatened

The grand slam was Roneberg's second of the season
He also went deep with the bases loaded on May 12th v Binghamton

Roneberg capped his huge night with a two-run single in the top of the seventh to give Altoona's lead plenty of padding at 6-1

Wardell Starling (3-2) allowed just one run in six innings to pick up the win for Altoona
The right-hander walked one batter and struck out four
He surrendered his lone run in the bottom of the sixth inning, after the Curve had already built a healthy four-run lead

Relievers Blaine Neal, Jorge Vasquez and Ron Chiavacci each worked a scoreless inning to help the Curve pitching staff hold an opponent to two runs or fewer for the eighth time in nine games

Leadoff man Nyjer Morgan recorded his second straight three hit game and scored a pair of runs in the victory

The victory improved the Curve (61-43) to eighteen games above the .500 mark, matching a season high
Connecticut (47-60) lost for the twelfth time in thirteen games

The two clubs will play the deciding game of their rain-shortened three-game series Sunday afternoon at 2.05pm
Altoona will send righty Jason Roach (6-2, 2.34) to the mound against fellow right-hander Chris Begg (8-10, 3.92)

Roneberg delivers six RBI's in 6-1 Altoona victory over Connecticut

The Connecticut Defenders could not ride their momentum to another victory, and took a 6-1 loss at the hands of the Altoona Curve

Brett Roneberg knocked in all six runs for Altoona in the winning effort

The game was scoreless entering the third inning when James Garcia made a fielding error with one out and two runners on base
An inning ending double play would have likely been the result had the play been made cleanly, but instead Garcia was left with one out and the bases loaded
The next batter, clean-up hitter Brett Roneberg took Garcia deep for a grand slam, giving Altoona a 4-0 lead

In the bottom of the the fifth, the Defenders had a threat, loading the bases with two outs, but Dan Ortmeier struck out looking to end the threat

The 'Brians' finally produced a run for the Defenders in the bottom of the sixth with a Brian Buscher lead off double followed by a Brian Horwitz RBI single making the score 4-1

The Curve would put the game out of reach in the top of the seventh thanks to Roneberg again
With two outs and the bases loaded, Roneberg had a two run infield single to make the score 6-1, which would be the final

The Defenders will try to take the series victory on Sunday afternoon behind right hand ground ball specialist Chris Begg (8-10)
The Curve will send right hander Jason Roach (6-2) to the hill to face the Defenders

The first pitch is scheduled for 2.05pm

Roneberg, Curve down Defenders

Brett Roneberg belted a grand slam and drove in a season-high six RBI's to lead visiting Altoona over Connecticut, 6-1, on Saturday

Roneberg, whose eighth homer gave the Curve a 4-0 lead in the third inning, added a two-run single in the seventh

The 27-year-old right-fielder is 15-for-35 with thirteen RBI's over his last ten games, raising his average from .276 to .293

The performance marked the tenth time in Altoona's eight-year history that a player has collected six or more RBI's in a game

Most recently, Vic Buttler knocked in six runs against Reading on May 17, 2006

Nyjer Morgan added three hits and two runs scored for the Curve (61-43), who have won four of their last five

Altoona starter Wardell Starling (3-2) worked six strong innings, giving up one run on six hits and a walk while striking out four

Connecticut's James Garcia (2-5) allowed four runs - three earned - on four hits and a walk while fanning six over five innings

Brian Horwitz smacked an RBI single in the sixth for the Defenders (47-60), who have lost twelve of their last thirteen games

Pirates Farm Report

Altoona (Double-A, 61-43) won, 6-1, at Connecticut (Giants)

Right fielder Brett Roneberg accounted for all his team's runs, going 2 for 4 with a grand slam in the third inning

Wardell Starling (3-2) picked up the win, giving up one run and six hits in six innings

Relief pitchers Blaine Neal, Jorge Vasquez and Ron Chiavaccin worked the final three innings, allowing no runs

Connecticut's Jake Wald, right, drops the ball at second base Saturday
as Altoona's Nyjer Morgan slides in safely during their game at Dodd Stadium

Roneberg's six RBI's are too much for the Defenders to handle in loss

The Connecticut Defenders have scored five runs in their last six games
Brett Roneberg drove in more than that on Saturday night alone

The Altoona right fielder came in hitting .419 in his last nine games and continued that torrid pace with a pair of hits and all six RBI in a 6-1 victory for the Curve at Dodd Stadium

Roneberg did have some help, especially at the top of the lineup
, as the Defenders continued to have more than their share of troubles against opposing teams' leadoff hitters in their five-game homestand thus far

Todd Donovan of the Bowie Baysox had nine hits in a three-game set v the Defenders to start the week, and the Curve's Nyjer Morgan picked up where the Bowie outfielder left off
Morgan had two singles and a triple in Thursday night's opener and followed that up with another three for five night on Saturday

"You have to keep the leadoff hitter off base
If you don't, they're going to kill you" Connecticut manager Dave Machemer said
"They're going to score runs like they did"

Morgan helped set up Roneberg in the third inning as he lofted a one-out single into short left field
Brian Bixler slapped one hard toward the second base bag that Connecticut second baseman Derin McMains made a great diving stop on, but could not get up and make a play
The Curve then loaded the bases when a comebacker to pitcher James Garcia (2-5) found its way under his glove
That brought up Roneberg, who drilled a shot over the wall in right for a grand slam

"It was a slider, middle in, and I had seen three of them in my first at bat" Roneberg said "so I just reacted to that one and it was in a good hitting spot"

It was the second grand slam of the season for the former Red Sox farmhand, who had Altoona's first slam of the season on May 12th v Binghamton

"He's a veteran guy who can hurt you," Machemer said about the Altoona outfielder
"He can probably hit at a lot higher level than this because he sure hits here
I've seen the kid for three years - I know he can hit"

Winning pitcher Wardell Starling (3-2) helped his own cause in the seventh as he slipped a double over Brian Horwitz's head in right field
Morgan looked as if he would be the second out of the inning, but his pop behind third base fell in between three Defenders for a base hit
Bixler walked to load the bases and, one out later, Roneberg slapped one into short right field that McMains could not make a play on and two more runs scored

"I was pretty happy looking at the scoreboard tonight and knowing that I drove them all in" Roneberg said
"It's nice to have a night like that"

The Defenders did push a run across in the sixth on a double by Brian Buscher and a single from Brian Horwitz

Connecticut did outhit Altoona 9-8, with Horwitz and Quincy Foster each getting a pair
The problem was they left nine runners on base, six in scoring position

"We hit, but we didn't have the big hit, and that's been a problem all season" Machemer said

Early Grand Slam Dooms Defenders

Grand slams have a tendency to deflate opposing teams, and when that opposing team has scored just five runs in their last four games, the deflation becomes much more apparent

Brett Roneberg hit a grand slam to right field in the third inning, helping the Altoona Curve to a 6-1 win over the Connecticut Defenders before 3,140 fans at Dodd Stadium on Saturday night

Roneberg, who won an Olympic Silver Medal as a member of the Australian national team in 2004, added a two-run single in the seventh and drove in every Altoona run

“I was pretty happy with looking at the scoreboard tonight and knowing that I drove them all in” Roneberg said
“It's nice to have a night like that”

Roneberg hit a slider that got too much of the plate for the grand slam
After seeing a few sliders in his first at-bat, Roneberg was sitting on the pitch
“I saw three of them, and I just reacted to that one” Roneberg said

The loss is the twelfth in the last thirteen games for Connecticut, which snapped an eleven game losing streak with a 2-1 win over the Curve on Thursday

The Defenders remain in last place in the Eastern League in runs scored, a full 100 runs behind Erie, the team closest to them in the category

“Grand slams take the wind out of your sails a little early in the game
You don't want to see that” Connecticut manager Dave Machemer said
“But, we seemed to have some life in the dugout still
We just didn't have the big hit, and that's been the problem, the big hit”

Making his eighth start of the season for Altoona, Wardell Starling went six innings for his third Double-A win
Starling, who held Carolina League batters to a .202 batting average before being promoted from Single-A Lynchburg on June 19, gave up one run on six hits with three strikeouts
The Pittsburgh Pirates' fourth-round draft selection in 2002, he also doubled and scored a run

Connecticut scored its only run in the sixth when Brian Buscher hit a leadoff double and Brian Horwitz drove him in with a single

The Curve entered the game in second place in the Southern Division, and with the second-best record in the entire league, just 3-1/2 games behind first-place Akron

The well-balanced Curve lead the league in team ERA and are second in team batting average

Connecticut continued to allow the leadoff batter to reach base, as Nyjer Morgan had three hits, scored twice and stole a base
During a three-game set with Bowie, East Lyme native Todd Donovan had nine hits from the leadoff sport as the Baysox swept the series

“You've got to keep the leadoff hitter off base
If you don't, they're going to kill you
They're going to score runs” Machemer said
“Tonight, Morgan did”

The Defenders loaded the bases in the fifth on a single by Todd Jennings, a walk to Jake Wald and another single by Quincy Foster, but Dan Ortmeier took a called third strike to end the threat

Ortmeier also struck out with a man on third in the seventh
