Welcome to the 2005 DrinkSmart Northern
University Games!
The DrinkSmart Northern University Games (NUG) holds the distinction
of being Australian University Sports (AUS) longest running
multi-sport event
First held in 1991, the Games led the way for other AUS regions
to develop similar multi-sport events and, in fact, precipitated
the creation of the inaugural Australian University Games in 1993
This year the Games will be held in Cairns, Queensland from 3
- 7 July
From the rainforest to the reef, Far North Queensland, will create
a magnificent setting for the Games
Cairns in July, is like being in paradise
With daytime temperatures averaging 25°C and the water temperature
hovering around 24°C during the Games week, competitors will
not believe that it is the middle of winter
There is an action-packed social program, which serves to complement
the Games sporting program and enhance the event experience for
participants
The 2005 DrinkSmart Northern University Games is held over five
days and will attract approximately 2000 competitors from 14 member
universities across northern New South Wales, Queensland and the
Northern Territory
The competitors will compete in 16 sports including Australian
Football (14 a side), Baseball, Basketball, Golf, Handball, Hockey,
Netball, Rugby League 7's, Rugby Union 15's (Men), Rugby Union
7's (Women), Soccer, Squash, Tennis, Touch, Ultimate Frisbee,
Volleyball and Water Polo
Each year, three main trophies are awarded
------The
Jodie Martin Perpetual Trophy (Overall Champion)
------The
Patrons Population Cup (Per Capita Champion) and
------The
Ron Leahy Award (Spirit of the Games)
In conjunction with the sport program, the Opening Ceremony and
social program are spectacles that are not to be missed

We appreciate your time for the 2005 DrinkSmart Northern University
Games Launch at 11.00am on Wednesday 6th April at Barlow Park
in Cairns
I have attached several pages of information about Australian
University Sport, the Northern University Games and our event,
the 2005 DrinkSmart Northern University Games that will be held
in Cairns for the first time from the 3rd to 7th July
It would be much appreciated if you were able to give a short
speech on the benefits of the event to Cairns, how education is
important to athletes and especially professional athletes, and
possibly a story or two about your career
I will also prompt the MC with some questions in regards to these
areas
Once again, I thank you for your support of the event, and if
you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact
me
Regards
