An email from Brett
"Well, it was a fun
day!!
Just being around there and getting a hit my first at-bat was
pretty cool.
In my first at-bat, it was "0-2" and he threw a slider
and I singled to centre.
Next at-bat is was "0-1" and he threw another slider
but I grounded out to second base
Should've done a lot more with it but didn't!!"
The scoreboard!!!
This is an excerpt from
the game report which appeared in The Boston Herald
The Orioles' scoreboard operator was amusingly clueless about
the Red Sox roster yesterday.
When minor leaguer Brett Roneberg pinch hit in the eighth inning
wearing No. 26, the scoreboard said Ramiro Mendoza (a pitcher
who also wears No. 26) was up to bat.
Game Report
Pair in ninth lifts Red Sox over O's
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. -- Jimmy Alvarez's RBI triple scored Terry
Shumpert in the ninth inning, sparking the Red Sox's 4-2 win
over the Orioles on Sunday at Fort Lauderdale Stadium.
Shumpert singled to begin the ninth, and Alvarez drilled a line
drive to right-center field off Rodrigo Lopez.
Shumpert pulled up while scoring with what appeared to be a strained
hamstring.
David Murphy then singled in Alvarez to cap the scoring in the
Red Sox' second straight spring win over the Orioles.
Anastacio Martinez picked up his first save.
Boston forged ahead in the sixth when Miguel Tejada threw late
to first base on David McCarty's bases-loaded grounder and Manny
Ramirez scored.
But Lopez (1-2) ducked the jam by getting Shumpert to pop out
and striking out Doug Mirabelli.
Tejada made up for his miscue in the sixth by doubling off Mark
Malaska.
He then stole third and scored on catcher Mirabelli's throwing
error.
Erik Bedard was solid in his five innings, allowing one run and
two hits with three strikeouts.
Bronson Arroyo fared much better than in his first outing against
Baltimore, when he allowed four runs in the first inning.
Luis Matos began the Orioles first with a single, but he was caught
stealing.
The Orioles got on the board in the fourth when David Segui singled
off Arroyo and then Miguel Tejada walked.
One out later, Jay Gibbons followed with an RBI single to right
field, scoring Segui.
Arroyo escaped without further damage by striking out Melvin Mora.
Arroyo allowed one run and four hits in four innings.
The Red Sox evened the game in the fifth when McCarty broke Bedard's
no-hitter by socking a home run to left-center field.
One out later, Mirabelli singled and Cesar Crespo walked, but
Gibbons made a nice running catch in right field on Gabe Kapler's
liner to end the inning.
