Red Sox hold off Phillies, 5-3
CLEARWATER, Fla. -- Terry Francona enacted some measure of revenge on his former organization, as a Red Sox split squad beat the Phillies, 5-3, on Monday at Bright House Networks Field.
Boston did most of its damage against Bud Smith, scoring three runs in the fifth on three hits.
Andy Dominique singled, and Adam Hyzdu followed with a walk to lead off the inning.
Smith got two outs and appeared to be out of the inning, but Bill Mueller singled in Dominique and Brian Daubach laced a two-run double.
The Red Sox scored two more runs off Tim Worrell on two hits and a walk.
Vicente Padilla started for the Phillies and threw three scoreless innings, allowing one hit and two walks, while stiking out four.
Left-hander Phil Siebel dazzled for Boston, tossing two perfect frames, with three strikeouts.
Philadelphia mounted a three-run comeback in the ninth against Nick Bierbrodt, who had pitched a scoreless eighth.
