the Sea Dogs - they mentioned that "Roneberg is just six

Hattig haunts old Sea
Dog teammates
Ron Johnson had seen enough.
Had seen more than enough of Fisher Cat third baseman John Hattig
in the first five innings.
Had seen enough of him through most of the season when he played
for the Portland Sea Dogs.
So Johnson, the Sea Dogs' manager, intentionally walked Hattig
with men on second and third and two outs in the sixth.
Couldn't blame him.
Hattig had played one-man wrecking crew on his former teammates,
leading the Fisher Cats to an eventual 8-1 victory Saturday against
the Sea Dogs.
He homered in the first inning.
Had an RBI single in the second.
And then drilled a two-run homer in the fifth.
By the time the Fisher Cats were done with their offense at the
expense of Portland starter Ryan Cameron, it was 7-0 after five
innings.
The Fisher Cats were on their way to sole possession of first
place in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
And the Sea Dogs were on their way to a record of 49-57 and their
fifth straight loss to New Hampshire.
"It wasn't a game, really," Johnson said.
"The bottom line is we're playing a very good team and they're
rolling.
We have to find a way to stop them.
It's going to take a dominant pitching performance and going to
take some clutch hitting to put a little pressure on the opponent.
And right now we're not doing either."
The Sea Dogs get another chance at 1:05 p.m. today when the two
conclude the series and play their last game here.
They still have seven games left to play at Hadlock, three starting
Aug. 24 and four to close out the regular season over the Labor
Day weekend.
The Sea Dogs did little with New Hampshire left-handed starter
Gustavo Chacin.
He came in with an 11-2 record, both losses coming against the
Sea Dogs.
He had a 10.93 earned-run average against them, but proceeded
to shut them out on four hits over six innings.
Hattig and Co. did the rest.
Hattig, who went from the Sea Dogs to the Fisher Cats last week
when the Boston Red Sox acquired pitcher Terry Adams from the
Toronto Blue Jays, also had a couple of nice plays at third.
Johnson, coaching at third, had something to say about those.
"He said --- 'How come you didn't make those plays for me?'
" --- Hattig said with a laugh.
And the intentional walk?
"He was telling me, 'I've seen you locked in. I saw you in
Akron, I know what you can do,' " Hattig said.
Hattig went homer happy in Akron early in the season and earned
himself player of the week honors.
Yeah, Johnson had seen enough.
NOTES
The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock Field for a four-game series with
Erie starting Monday.
Left-hander Abe Alvarez (8-7, 3.62) will get the start in that
one against right-hander Matt Roney (8-8, 5.03).
Ron Johnson on Nomar Garciaparra going to the Cubs: "He's
going to be a free agent and it didn't look like he was real interested
in signing with us.
If that's the situation, you've got to do something to help the
club."
The Fisher Cats improved to 60-45 and moved a half-game in front
of rained-out Binghamton. Binghamton plays a doubleheader today
at home against New Britain.
Brett Roneberg said
Aug. 9 will be his last game with the Sea Dogs before joining
the Australian baseball team in Athens for the 2004 Summer Olympics.
Roneberg's vacancy will likely present a chance for someone from
Sarasota to step up.
Hattig heats it up for
Fisher Cats
John Hattig heated up.
And Ron Johnson called it.
Once his former third baseman got going, the Portland Sea Dogs
manager said Friday night, watch out.
His power numbers have been streaky, Johnson said.
When he gets hot, he can light it up real quick.
Johnson just hoped his team could get out of town before Hattig
got going.
No such luck.
Hattigs two home runs and run-scoring double staked the
Fisher Cats to a big lead on the way to a 8-1 win over the Sea
Dogs in front of a second straight sellout crowd of 4,250 last
night at Gill Stadium.
Gustavo Chacin ran his record to a league-best 12-2 with six shutout
innings.
The Fisher Cats have won seven of their last eight games overall
and five straight against the Sea Dogs.
And, at 61-45, they moved into sole possession of first-place
in the Eastern Leagues Northern Division.
Its the first time they have been alone on top since May
15.
That was partly because the Binghamton Mets, who had been tied
with the Fisher Cats, were rained out against New Britain.
Binghamton and New Britain will make the game up in Binghamton
as part of a doubleheader today.
The Fisher Cats, who needed a couple of homers and scored all
their runs in the last two innings in a 3-1 win over the Sea Dogs
Friday night, started early last night.
And pounded the ball all night.
They matched a team high with four home runs.
Hattig matched team-best marks with his two home runs and four
runs batted in.
And hes been with the team less than a week.
Maikel Jova and all-or-nothing Justin Singleton also homered.
Singleton won Friday nights game with a two-run walkoff
home run in the bottom of the ninth.
For the second straight game, he had three strikeouts and a home
run.
Shortstop Aaron Hill had three hits, including a pair of doubles.
The offensive display overshadowed the work of Chacin, the lefty
starter, who allowed four hits over six shutout innings.
The Sea Dogs had pretty much owned Chacin coming into the game.
They had handed him both of his losses.
And he had a 10.93 earned run average against them.
Not this time.
He gave up a double and three singles and no Sea Dog got past
second base against him.
Hattig powers Fisher Cats
John Hattig hit a pair of home runs and drove in four runs to
give the New Hampshire Fisher Cats an 8-1 victory over the Portland
Sea Dogs on Saturday.
New Hampshire (61-45) also got solo blasts from Justin Singleton
and Maikel Jova.
New Hampshire took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Aaron Hills
sacrifice fly and Hattigs solo homer.
An RBI single from Hattig brought the score to 3-0 in the third
inning.
Singletons bases-empty homer in the fourth inning and a
fifth inning featuring a two-run homer by Hattig and a solo shot
by Jova pushed the lead to 7-0.
Hills run-scoring double in the eighth inning brought the
score to 8-0.
Portland finally scored in the ninth inning when Stefan Bailie
came home on Joe Kilburgs groundout.
