They're happy campers
As bus after bus of summer-camp kids piled into Hadlock Field,
an usher leaned over with a wary look.
"This is not going to be a quiet game," he said.
It wasn't.
The high-pitched youngsters had plenty to scream about Thursday
as their Portland Sea Dogs paced around the bases in an 11-5 triumph
over the Binghamton Mets before a full house of 6,975 at Hadlock.
The camp kids, many from local recreation programs, enjoyed a
sunny, 77-degree day and another strong outing from Josh Stevens.
Stevens (6-7) turned in a second straight winning performance,
allowing two runs and five hits over six innings.
He again had command of his fastball, change-up and slow curve,
striking out eight.
Stevens also extended his streak of innings without a walk to
18-2/3.
"Same old stuff," Stevens said, smiling.
He recorded a complete-game victory in his last start.
It was a tale of two pitchers.
Jose Diaz (4-7) of Binghamton was the anti-Stevens, walking five
before leaving with two outs in the third inning.
Diaz pitched to a three-ball count to 13 of the 19 batters he
faced.
He threw 99 pitches, 50 for strikes.
Stevens threw 79 pitches with 55 strikes in six innings.
"Heck of a job," Portland Manager Ron Johnson said.
"Two real good (starts) in a row."
Reliever James Johnson struggled (three runs in 1-2/3 innings).
Mark Deschenes got the final four outs.
Stefan Bailie paced the Sea Dogs with three hits and three RBI.
His two-out, two-run single in the first gave Portland the lead
for good.
"I just got some fastballs," Bailie said.
Since being promoted 12 days ago from Class A Sarasota, he's batting
.395 (17 for 43).
Johnson wasn't surprised by Bailie's production.
"He's always been able to hit," said Johnson. "He
puts a charge into the ball."
Every Sea Dog in the lineup got a hit.
Among the leaders were Mike Lockwood (three hits, three runs),
Mike O'Keefe (three RBI), Sheldon Fulse (two-run homer to right
in the seventh) and Clint Chauncey, who made his first Double-A
hit count, a solo home run to center in the eighth.
Portland put the game away and knocked out Diaz with a four-run
third.
Diaz walked three and Portland
got hits from Brett Roneberg,
Bailie and O'Keefe.
The 13 hits countered Binghamton's 19 hits Wednesday night.
"Any time you get thrashed like we did, I was real pleased
to see us regroup," Johnson said.
Stevens had a shutout until the fifth, giving up two singles and
a wild pitch.
Ron Acuna homered in the sixth.
James Johnson gave up home runs to Chase Lambin and Angel Pagan.
Portland, which beat the Mets on Tuesday, won its first series
against Binghamton (59-45) this year.
The Sea Dogs (49-55) travel to Manchester, N.H., today to try
and do something they haven't done all year - win two straight
series.
New Hampshire (59-45) is tied with Binghamton for first place
in the Eastern League Northern Division.
NOTES
Reliever Tim Hamulack went on the disabled list with elbow tendinitis.
Players left after the game for the annual lobster bake at the
Kennebunk summer home of the owner, Dan Burke.
Ron Johnson's wife, Daphne, and their three children leave today
for their home in Florida.
School starts soon in Orlando.
The Sea Dogs begin a three-game series in Manchester, N.H., tonight.
Kason Gabbard (0-3) will get the start.
They return home Monday for a four-game series with Erie.
Sea Dogs batter B-Mets pitchers
Portland roughed up a trio of Binghamton pitchers Thursday, turning
an early lead into an easy 11-5 Eastern League victory.
The Sea Dogs tagged B-Mets' starter Jose Diaz and relievers Micah
Mangrum and Kole Strayhorn equally hard, taking a 6-0 lead in
the third inning.
Stefan Bailie's RBI double off Diaz (4-7) sparked the four-run
outburst in the inning.
Bailie and Mike O'Keefe each drove in three runs for Portland
and Clint Chauncey and Sheldon Fulse each homered.
Diaz allowed six runs on six hits and five walks over 2-2/3 innings.
Mangrum worked 3-1/3 innings, giving up three runs two earned
and Strayhorn was touched for two runs in the seventh and one
in the eighth.
Angel Pagan, Ron Acuna, and Chase Lambin hit solo homers for the
B-Mets, who managed to hold on to a share of the North Division
lead despite the loss.
Acuna had three hits.
Mets Pitchers Hammered In 11-5 Loss
At Portland
Jose Diaz failed to make it out of the third inning, as the Portland
Sea Dogs were on their way towards launching an 11-run, 13-hit
attack en route to a series-clinching 11-5 victory at Hadlock
Field in Portland.
The loss dropped the B-Mets to a 59-45 mark in Eastern League
play, but managed to remain in a tie atop the Northern League
division, courtesy of New Britain's 4-3 victory over New Hampshire.
Diaz (4-7) would last just 2-2/3 innings, yielding 6 runs - 5
earned - off 6 hits and 5 strikeouts.
Micah Mangrum and Kole Strayhorn would combine for 5-1/3 innings
of relief, yielding a combined 5 earned runs off 7 hits, striking
out 5.
The B-Mets hit three home runs on the afternoon, including the
first round-tripper of the 2004 season by Ron Acuna.
The other home runs were hit by Chase Lambin - who homered for
the second consecutive game - and Angel Pagan.
The Mets tallied single runs in the 5th, 6th, and 7th innings,
and would score twice in the 8th, but it was not nearly enough
to offset the red-hot bats of the Sea Dogs.
Sea Dogs starter Josh Stevens (6-7) picked up the victory, allowing
just 2 runs in 6 innings of work.
