Pre-game Report
The Sea Dogs begin
a three-game series with Binghamton tonight, with Eric Glaser
as the scheduled starter.
Portland will be without its top hitter, catcher Jeff Bailey,
who was called up to Pawtucket.
He replaces Andy Dominique, who was called to Boston to fill in
for Jason Varitek, who hurt his wrist in an altercation with Alex
Rodriguez on Saturday.
Bailey was batting .299 for Portland, with 12 home runs, 57 RBI
and 56 runs.
Bailey is being replaced by Albert Conception from Class A Sarasota.
Game Reports
Dogs buck the odds for
a win
Las Vegas bookmakers do not give odds on minor-league baseball
games, but the Portland Sea Dogs' chances looked poor Tuesday
night.
Portland had lost nearly 25 percent of its offense in the past
three days with the trade of John Hattig and the promotion of
Jeff Bailey.
The Sea Dogs' starting rotation remained a skeleton crew because
of injuries.
And worst of all, the last-place Sea Dogs played host to the first-place
Binghamton Mets, a team that swept Portland on its last visit
to Hadlock Field.
But the long shot came through Tuesday.
Portland scored three early runs and its patchwork pitching held
up in a 3-2 victory.
Sea Dogs closer Juan Perez struck out Chase Lambin with the bases
loaded to end the game for his fourth save.
Stefan Bailie doubled in two runs in the first inning, and Joe
Kilburg doubled in a run in the second.
"Any time you have success against this ballclub, you have
to feel real good about yourself," Portland Manager Ron Johnson
said.
"You look at their league record and their success against
us . . . we have not shaken hands (after the game) very much against
these guys."
Portland right-hander Eric Glaser, making his third straight spot
start, held Binghamton to two runs (one earned) over four innings.
Tim Hamulack (1-0) made his fourth appearance since coming from
Triple-A Pawtucket.
He threw three scoreless innings, striking out six, to pick up
the win.
Mark Deschenes pitched 1-1/3 innings, and Perez finished it off.
Portland (48-54) remained in last place in the Eastern League
Northern Division.
Binghamton (58-44) fell into a tie for first with New Hampshire,
a 6-1 winner over New Britain.
The Sea Dogs and Mets play again tonight, weather permitting.
Sea Dogs employees were ready to roll out the tarp Tuesday, but
the game was never interrupted as the midgame sprinkles did not
last long.
Binghamton took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Glaser did damage
control by retiring the final two batters with two runners aboard.
In the bottom of the first with two outs, Mike Lockwood battled
for a walk on nine pitches.
Brett Roneberg's grounder
got by first baseman Brent Harper, and Bailie scored them both with a shot to right-center.
In the second, Kenny Perez led off with a triple.
Mets starter Ken Chenard (6-3) then struck out two and got ahead
of Kilburg, 0-2.
But Kilburg lined a double to right-center, scoring Perez for
a 3-1 lead.
Binghamton closed to 3-2 when the Sea Dogs' infield let a fly
ball drop on the pitcher's mound, scoring a run with two outs.
But the Mets, the league's top-hitting team, got no more.
Perez entered with two runners on and one out.
He struck out two, sandwiched around a walk.
NOTES
The paid attendance was announced at 6,809.
Tuesday was ALS Night at Hadlock, raising awareness of the disease
commonly referred to as Lou Gehrig's disease.
The first 1,000 fans at today's game will receive a Josh Beckett
bobblehead doll.
Also, the Sea Dogs and the Jewish Community Alliance will recognize
the contributions of Jewish players to major-league baseball.
B-Mets fall into tie for first after slipping vs. Sea Dogs
The Binghamton Mets lost in the rain Tuesday night and are close
to losing their grip in the Eastern League's Northern Division.
The Mets lost, 3-2, to the Portland Sea Dogs and with New Hampshire's
5-inning victory over New Britain, fell back into a first-place
tie in the division for the first time since May 17.
The Sea Dogs took advantage of a Mets error to even the score
at 1 in the first inning.
With Mike Lockwood on first, Brett
Roneberg hit a grounder that went through the legs of first baseman
Brett Harper.
Stefan Bailie followed with a two-run double to give the Sea Dogs
a 2-1 lead.
The Sea Dogs went ahead for good in the second.
Kenny Perez tripled to lead off the inning and Joe Kilburg drove
him in with a double to right-center.
The Mets got a run back in the third.
Eric Glauser walked Angel Pagan, who stole second with designated
hitter Josh Pressley at the plate.
Pressley hit an infield pop fly, which dropped to the ground after
no Portland infielders tried to make the play.
Pagan ran all the way home on the error, which was given to third
baseman Kilburg.
The Mets left 13 runners on base - at least one in every inning
and eight of them in scoring position.
They left the bases loaded to end the game.
The teams play the second game of the three-game series at 7 tonight.
PORTLAND HOLDS OFF B-METS, RAIN FOR 3-2 WIN
Bullpen Tosses 5 Shutout Innings in Victory
Tim Hamulack tossed three scoreless innings of relief to earn
his first win with Portland in nearly two seasons and Juan Perez
struck out Chase Lambin with the bases loaded in a driving rain
to end the game as the Portland Sea Dogs held on for a 3-2 win
over the Binghamton Mets Tuesday night.
Stefan Bailie collected a two-run double and Joe Kilburg added
an RBI double for the Sea Dogs.
Mike Lockwood doubled, singled, walked twice and scored a run.
Binghamton left 13 runners on base, including eight in scoring
position, in the loss.
Hamulack relieved Eric Glaser, who allowed two runs (one earned)
over four innings.
The left-hander allowed three hits in three innings and struck
out a season-high six to earn the win.
Eastern League Game Summary - Binghamton at Portland

Loss in Portland Drops Mets to First Place Tie
The Mets allowed two unearned runs in the first inning and left
13 men on base in a 3-2 loss at Portland Tuesday night.
The loss - and a New Hampshire win at New Britain - dropped the
Mets to a first-place tie with the Fisher Cats for the first time
since May 17.
After giving the Mets a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning
with a two-out double, Brett
Harper misplayed a ground ball to first base.
That opened the door for a two-run, two-out double by Stefan Bailie.
Portland took the lead it would not relinquish.
Each team scored once more.
The Mets left runners on base in every inning, 13 total.
The had the bases loaded in the ninth inning when Chase Lambin
struck out to end the game.
Tim Hamulack (1-0) threw three scoreless innings for the win.
Ken Chenard (6-3) gave up three runs, one earned on four hits
for the loss.
Juan Perez got the final two outs for his fourth save.
The Mets (58-44) have had at least a share of first place every
day since winning May 16.
Wednesday night, they pitch Jason Scobie (3-2, 2.76) against Abe
Alvarez (8-6, 3.53).
