Early deficit proves costly
for Sea Dogs
When Sea Dogs starter Ryan Cameron left the field the after his
fifth and final inning of work Sunday afternoon, Manager Ron Johnson
bounded from the home dugout to give him a hearty handshake and
to throw a congratulatory arm around his pitcher's shoulders.
No matter that Cameron was on the short end of a score that would
not change, that he would be charged with Portland's 3-1 loss
to the Norwich Navigators before a subdued sellout crowd of 6,975
at Hadlock Field.
Cameron had taken the makings of an ugly outing and turned it
into something worthwhile.
After not throwing a strike until his seventh pitch, after walking
two batters and hitting another before recording his second out,
Cameron (2-3) settled down and held one of the better-hitting
teams in the Eastern League to one bloop single through five innings.
"That's not an easy thing to do, to turn it around and be
sitting in the fifth inning almost throwing a no-hitter,"
Johnson said.
"Realistically, the guy should have had a no-hitter, because
the ball that fell in, we misplayed it."
With the bases loaded from Cameron's early wildness, a broken-bat
ground out and the flare by Chris Curry that fooled Sea Dogs left
fielder Mike O'Keefe and fell just in front of him resulted in
a 3-0 first-inning lead for Navigators.
As it turned out, that was more than enough for Norwich starter
Josh Habel (4-8), who allowed only three singles in his six innings.
Portland's only run came in the second.
Jeff Bailey singled and, after a walk and a wild pitch, scored
on an an infield out by Kenny Perez.
The Sea Dogs put a runner on third in the seventh and eighth against
Norwich reliever Scott Munter and Perez singled in the ninth off
closer Alberto Montes, but the Sea Dogs failed to cash in.
"Even though we got a few guys on base, for the most part,
Mr. Hamel dominated our offense," Johnson said.
With the wind blowing in from right field for a change, Hadlock
became a little more spacious.
The only extra-base hit was a double off the left-field wall in
the sixth by Sea Dogs nemesis Mike Cervenak, and he was nearly
thrown out at second.
When the Sea Dogs last faced Habel it was at Norwich's Dodd Stadium,
also known as Jurassic Park for its sizable dimensions.
O'Keefe and Stefan Bailie both took Habel deep in that game last
Tuesday, the first of a stretch in which Portland has lost 5 of
6.
"There were a couple change-ups that I left up and they hit
'em out," Habel said Sunday, ice wrapped to his left shoulder.
"This time I tried to concentrate on keeping everything down."
The three runs Cameron allowed brought his total to 13 first-inning
runs in his eight starts.
In the other 31-1/3 innings of his starts, opponents have managed
only nine runs.
He retired 11 in a row after Curry's flare.
"Some of the great ones were like that," Johnson said.
"If you didn't get to Catfish Hunter in the first few innings,
it was over.
If we knew why, I think we could just put that in paper form and
probably make a lot of money."
Curry, Habel Lift Gators Past Dogs
Chris Curry hit a two-run single and Josh Habel pitched six strong
innings as the Norwich Navigators defeated the Portland Sea Dogs
3-1 on Sunday.
Norwich (54-45) led 3-0 from the first inning.
After the Navigators loaded the bases on two walks and a hit batsman,
they picked up one run when Daniel Ortmeier grounded out and two
more runners scored on Curry's looping single to left.
The Sea Dogs (47-54) tallied their lone run in the second inning
when Jeff Bailey singled, advanced to third on a walk and wild
pitch and scampered home on Kenny Perez's groundout.
Habel was in command throughout his six-inning outing, striking
out seven, walking two and allowing three singles and one run
as he improved to 4-8.
Portland starter Ryan Cameron dropped to 2-3 with the loss.
EARLY RUNS DOWN SEA DOGS IN 3-1 LOSS
Norwich Scores 3 First Inning Runs
Chris Curry's bloop two-run single capped a three-run first inning,
lifting the Norwich Navigators to a 3-1 win over the Portland
Sea Dogs before a sellout crowd of 6,975 at Hadlock Field Sunday
afternoon.
The misplayed bloop hit was the only hit allowed by losing pitcher
Ryan Cameron, who also walked two and hit a man in the first inning
but allowed only one base runner in his final four innings.
Mike Lockwood singled twice and made a diving catch in left field
to earn Allied Big Dog of the Game honors.
Portland went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position in the
loss.
The Sea Dogs dropped five of seven games in the home-and-home
series to fall into last place in the Eastern League's Northern
Division.
NAVIGATORS WIN AGAIN
Three first-inning runs all Habel needs in 3-1 win
The Navigators finished an impressive week against the Sea Dogs
by winning their fifth game in seven day against Portland 3-1.
Josh Habel earned the win, giving up one run and striking out
seven in six innings.
Scott Munter pitched two scoreless innings of releif and Albert
Montes nailed the save with a scoreless ninth.
The Navigators scored all their runs in the first thanks to some
sloppy Portland play.
Carlos Valderrama and Derin McMains walked to start the game and
Mike Cervenak was hit by an 0-2 pitch to load the bases.
Dan Ortmeier brought home the first run with an RBI groundout.
Chris Curry knocked in the next two with a bloop two-run single
that fell in front of left fielder Mike O'Keefe, who broke late
on contact.
