Game Reports
Sinking Dogs lose game, then Hattig

These Portland Sea Dogs remain in last place, a position guaranteed by their 7-3 loss to Norwich Saturday night.
But the key mission for Portland is to serve its major-league affiliate, the Boston Red Sox.

So far, two Sea Dogs have jumped from Portland to pitch in Boston (Joe Nelson and Abe Alvarez).

And during Saturday's game, Portland played a role in strengthening the Red Sox bullpen.

Sea Dogs third baseman John Hattig was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays for major-league right-handed reliever Terry Adams.

Portland Manager Ron Johnson got a call from the Red Sox during the game and sent Hattig to the clubhouse after the fifth inning.

"I thought he was taking me out for not hustling," Hattig said.
"But R.J. said he'd tell me after the game."

Hattig, 24, developed himself into a prospect after being a 25th-round pick in 1998, hitting .295 for Portland with 12 home runs and 35 RBI in 75 games.

"Our job is to get these guys to the big leagues with us, or make them marketable to other teams," Johnson said.
"We were able to have a player play well enough to get him involved in a major-league deal to help our major-league club.
From that standpoint, I feel really good.
From a personal standpoint, it makes you sad.
I love this kid.
I've seen him develop from a pudgy, heavier kid to someone who got himself in shape and who has true power."

Hattig said goodbye to his teammates, but he will see them next weekend, when Portland plays at New Hampshire, Toronto's Double-A affiliate.

"Everyone was talking about trades," Hattig said.
"I didn't think I would be the one.
It will be better for my career, and I'm going to a playoff team."

New Hampshire (56-44) currently holds a playoff spot for the Eastern League playoffs.

The Sea Dogs cannot say the same thing.

Portland (47-53) lost its fourth in five games Saturday, before a soldout Hadlock Field (6,975).

Portland is nine games behind New Hampshire.
With 42 games left, Portland is likely to miss the playoffs for a seventh straight year.

On Saturday, the Sea Dogs were cursed by errors (two unearned runs) and
a sensational above-the-wall catch by right fielder Daniel Ortmeier, robbing Brett Roneberg of a game-tying, three-run homer in the seventh.

Portland got a run in the first (Jeff Bailey sacrifice fly), the fifth (Roneberg's RBI double off the right-field wall) and the ninth (Jesus Medrano's RBI single).

But Norwich (53-45) got to Portland starter Kason Gabbard (0-3) for two runs in the second (a walk and three hits) and an unearned run in the third, when Hattig bobbled a grounder.

Norwich scored twice on reliever Bo Donaldson but, again, one of the runs was unearned.

Portland has allowed 73 unearned runs, 11 more than any team in the league.

"We're in a rut where we not only make silly errors on routine plays, but we compound them by allowing extra-base hits after," Johnson said.
"We're not picking each other up."

Portland reliever Juan Perez allowed two runs in the ninth.

NOTES
Red Sox reliever Scott Williamson could be pitching in Portland on Tuesday.
Williamson, who is expected to make a rehab appearance today in Triple-A Pawtucket, will then come to Portland if he has no setbacks, according to a report on Redsox.com.
Norwich's Michael Cervenak (3 for 5) continues to crush Portland pitching and is batting .513 vs. the Sea Dogs.

PORTLAND FALLS TO NORWICH, 7-3
Dogs Fall for Fourth Time in Five Tries

Chris Begg scattered six hits and two runs over 6.1 innings and Mike Cervenak went 3-for-5 with two RBI as the Norwich Navigators topped the Portland Sea Dogs, 7-3 Saturday night before a sellout crowd at Hadlock Field.

Jesus Medrano collected three hits for the second straight night while scoring and knocking in a run to collect the Allied Big Dog of the Game.

Brett Roneberg collected a double, single and RBI, but his potential game-tying three-run home run was robbed by Norwich right fielder Dan Ortmeier, who reached over the right field wall to pull in Roneberg's drive.

Kason Gabbard (0-3) allowed three hits and three runs (two earned) in 2.2 innings to suffer the loss.

Later that inning, Norwich took a 2-1 lead when Julian Benavidez plated Chavez with a double to left field.

He scattered seven hits, but yielded just two runs while striking out six.
He walked two.

The third baseman is hitting a very healthy .346 this season.

Benavidez's RBI double was the key hit as the Navigators (53-45) rallied for two runs in the second.

An error allowed one Norwich run in the third inning with back-to-back doubles by McMains and Clark making it 4-1 in the fifth.

Brett Roneberg's RBI double narrowed Portland's deficit by one in the bottom the fifth, but the Navigators replied with one in the sixth and Cervanek's two-run drive off the left-field wall made it 7-2 in the top of the ninth.
