Game Reports
Sea Dogs make it very interesting
Jeff Bailey and Joe Kilburg thought they had Sunday afternoon
off.
After all, Bailey has caught every Portland Sea Dogs game lately,
and Kilburg deserved a rest to nurse the shiner he got from an
errant fastball in Saturday night's game against Trenton.
Instead, they both found themselves representing the tying run
as pinch hitters in the ninth inning Sunday at Waterfront Park.
But neither got the job done, and the Thunder avoided a four-game
series sweep with a 6-4 victory.
Portland starter Josh Stevens (4-7) fell to 2-5 in his last 11
starts.
On a rainy, unpleasant afternoon, he allowed nine base runners
and five runs in 5-2/3 innings.
Trenton ace Chien-ming Wang was in top form, giving up just two
runs over seven innings, with no walks and eight strikeouts.
"I don't fault our kids at all," said Sea Dogs Manager
Ron Johnson. "Wang had a lot of action on his pitches.
"I'll take three out of four on the road."
Portland broke out on top in the first when John Hattig's single
scored Mike Lockwood, who had punched a one-out single to right.
Lockwood went 7 for 16 with four RBI and five runs scored in the
series.
The Thunder took the lead in the third inning on a two-run double
by Andy Cannizaro, who has 15 RBI in his last 10 games.
Cannizaro then stole third and came home when catcher Clint Chauncey
threw the ball into left field, giving Trenton a 3-1 lead.
Portland center fielder Sheldon Fulse, who made a sliding catch
on Cannizaro in the fifth, led off the sixth with an infield single.
Fulse moved to second
on a single by designated hitter Brett Roneberg and scored on a base hit by Hattig,
who finished with three hits.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jason Grove was credited with a single
when third baseman Hattig, shortstop Kenny Perez, and left fielder
Mike O'Keefe converged on a fly ball just inside the left-field
line but no one could make the play.
Omar Fuentes promptly doubled to left, ending Stevens' day.
Reliever Colin Young then allowed a two-run single by pinch-hitter
David Parrish, and the Thunder led 5-2.
Lockwood drove a 2-1 pitch from Charlie Manning over the right-field
fence in the eighth to pull the Sea Dogs to 5-3, but Trenton answered
with a run in the bottom of the inning.
Cannizaro singled off the glove of a diving Fulse in center, moved
to third on a single through the right side by Bronson Sardinha
and scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Teuris Olivares.
As the rain fell harder in the ninth, Stefan Bailie led off with
a single to center against Trenton closer David Shepard.
After O'Keefe was caught looking at a third strike, Perez doubled
to center to score Bailie.
Bailey grounded out to shortstop, sending Perez to third, before
Kilburg struck out swinging to end the game.
NOTES
Chauncey, in his first game for the Sea Dogs after joining the
organization in June, had a rough debut.
He struck out three times and committed two throwing errors while
Trenton recorded five stolen bases.
Infielder Jesus Medrano, on rehab in the Gulf Coast League, could
rejoin the Sea Dogs as early as today at Norwich.
THUNDER BREAK THROUGH FOR A 6-4 WIN OVER PORTLAND
Parrish and Cannizaro key win with big RBI hits
Chien-ming Wang threw seven solid innings to help Trenton defeat
Portland 6-4 in Eastern League play on Sunday afternoon.
Trenton snapped a three-game losing streak with the victory.
Wang (6-5) defeated Portland for the first time in four starts
against the Sea Dogs this season.
He scattered six hits and two runs but also struck out eight and
walked none.
Wang went at least seven innings in a start for the fourth time
in his last six starts.
After Portland (45-49) took a 1-0 lead in the 1st inning, Trenton
responded with three runs in the 3rd inning.
The key hit in the inning was a two-run double by Andy Cannizaro.
Cannizaro, who collected two hits and scored a run, has now hit
safely in 12 of his last 13 games.
The Sea Dogs cut the deficit to 3-2 in the top of the 6th inning,
but the Thunder responded in the bottom half of the inning.
David Parrish collected a pinch-hit two-run single with two outs
to increase Trenton's lead to 5-2.
Portland starter Josh Stevens (4-7) gave up five runs in 5-2/3
innings.
The loss ended Portland's four-game winning streak.
Ahead 5-3, the Thunder added a run in the 8th inning on a sacrifice
fly by Teuris Olivares.
Portland responded with a run in the ninth off Thunder closer
David Shepard to make it a 6-4 game, but Shepard struck out pinch-hitter
Joe Kilburg to end the game.
It was Shepard's 13th save of the year.

a two-run double down the left field line.
The shortstop then stole third and scored on a throwing error

the sixth, but Trenton answered with Parrish's two-RBI single
in the bottom half of the inning.
