SEA DOGS ROLL TO SECOND
STRAIGHT ROUT IN TRENTON
13-Hit Attack Paces 7-2 Win
Eric Glaser tossed five innings of one-hit ball for his first
win as a starting pitcher since last May and the Sea Dogs pounded
out 13 hits for the third straight game as Portland routed the
Trenton Thunder, 7-2 on Friday night.
Mike Lockwood and Brett
Roneberg both contributed with three-hit nights.
Lockwood scored twice and Roneberg
scored a run.
Mike O'Keefe was 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored and John
Hattig singled twice, drove in a run and scored a run.
Glaser retired 15 of the 17 batters he faced in a spot start.
He extended a scoreless inning streak to 13.1 innings and a hitless
streak to nine innings before allowing a run and hit in the fifth
frame.
Glaser's last four wins with Portland have come against Trenton,
where he pitched in 2002.
With the win, the Sea Dogs move to within a half-game of fourth-place
Trenton and seven games of a playoff spot in the Eastern League
Northern Division.
Glaser and Dogs step up, silence Thunder
Eric Glaser always did have a good time in Trenton, even when
he wasn't pitching at the top of his game for the Thunder in 2002.
After breaking the will of his former franchise with five superb
innings for Portland during the Sea Dogs' 7-2 victory Friday night
before an announced crowd of 7,523 at Waterfront Park, the big
right-hander had one more reason to love New Jersey's capital.
The win was Glaser's first as a starter since May 29, 2003 against,
yes, Trenton.
Of his five career Double-A wins, four have come against the Thunder.
"It's always nice coming back here," Glaser said.
"Fans still come up and talk to me before the games, which
is pretty neat.
I didn't plan on being (in Double-A) for three years and my stats
aren't anywhere near where I want them to be, so I expected a
lot out of myself out there."
Glaser, 2-9 with a 5.70 ERA in 33 games with Trenton during the
final year of the club's eight-year affiliation with Boston, was
making a spot start.
He did not allow the slumbering Thunder (43-46) a hit until Mitch
Jones led off the fifth inning with a triple, and Glaser hardly
broke a sweat in nailing down the final two outs of the inning
before giving way to reliever Bo Donaldson.
Although his outing was not as long as the six innings turned
in by Trenton's Ramon Ramirez, nor as flashy when matched against
Ramirez's 10 strikeouts, Glaser (2-3) kept the ball down and in
the field of play.
Thought to have a cap of four innings after not starting a game
since June 19, Glaser went one better and extended his scoreless
streak to 13-1/3 innings before Jones crossed the plate in the
fifth.
"(Portland) didn't have anyone that was going to knock the
bat out of your hands, and we had some very poor at-bats,"
Thunder Manager Stump Merrill said.
"But give (Glaser) credit. What did we get, one hit off him?"
Trenton was 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position Friday,
making them 0 for 19 overall since Bronson Sardinha's first-inning
single Thursday against Ryan Cameron.
The rest of the night belonged to a Sea Dogs offense that began
the evening with six everyday players hitting .325 or better against
the Thunder this season.
Despite 14 strikeouts against four Trenton pitchers Friday night,
Portland (44-48) has scored 16 runs on 27 hits in the first two
games of the series.
Mike Lockwood and Brett
Roneberg had three hits
each, and Mike O'Keefe drove in two runs.
NOTES
First baseman Stefan Bailie with join the Sea Dogs before tonight's
game.
Bailie was hitting .306 with 11 home runs and 48 RBI in 58 games
for Class A Sarasota.
PORTLAND TAKES SECOND STRAIGHT FROM TRENTON 7-2
Jones has two hits in loss
Brett Roneberg and Mike Lockwood had three hits apiece to help lead Portland to a 7-2 victory over
Trenton in Eastern League play on Friday night.
Portland (44-48) scored three runs in the 4th inning and three
more in the 7th inning to help put the game away.
John Hattig and Mike O'Keefe also had two hits apiece to help
pace the Sea Dogs.
In the 4th inning, Portland broke a scoreless game open with RBI
hits by Kenny Perez and Sheldon Fulse to take a 3-0 lead.
After Trenton (43-46) cut the deficit to 3-1 in the 5th inning,
Portland extended its lead to 6-1 in the 7th inning on an RBI
double by Jeff Bailey and a two-run single by O'Keefe.
The Thunder scored single runs in the 5th and 7th innings.
In the 5th inning, Mitch Jones led off with a triple and scored
on a Jason Grove RBI groundout.
Jones led off the 7th inning with a double and scored later in
the inning on a Jake Weber RBI groundout.
Jones has now scored 11 runs so far during the 8-game homestand.
Trenton struggled again with runners in scoring position.
The Thunder went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position and
is 1-for-19 in the series.
Thunder starter Ramon Ramirez (1-3) tossed six innings and scattered
three runs and seven hits.
He tied his season-high and the Thunder season-high in strikeouts
with 10.
Portland starter Eric Glaser (2-3) picked up the victory by only
giving up one run and one hit in five innings.
The series will continue on Saturday night at 7:05 p.m. as Sean
Henn (4-3) will take on Portland's Abe Alvarez (8-6).
