With chance to rise,
Sea Dogs stumble
In this just-completed homestand, the Portland Sea Dogs hoped
to make a move in the standings.
But the Sea Dogs went 3-4 over the seven games at Hadlock Field,
including a 7-2 defeat to the Akron Aeros before a sold-out Fourth
of July crowd of 6,975.
Portland (38-45) remained in last place in the Eastern League's
Northern Division, now 1-1/2 games behind fifth-place New Britain
and eight games behind second-place New Hampshire.
While the Hadlock ushers were challenged to squeeze every fan
into a seat, the Sea Dogs had trouble figuring out Fausto Carmona
(2-3), a 6-foot-4 prospect from the Dominican Republic.
Carmona, 20, has had his challenges at Double-A, but he showed
Sunday why he's the Cleveland Indians' No. 3 prospect, according
to Baseball America.
Carmona recovered from a rocky first inning (two runs, three hits),
to hold Portland to one hit over the next five innings.
Using a 94-mph fastball, a very good change-up and excellent control,
Carmona retired the last 10 batters he faced, and 17 of the last
18.
He struck out seven and walked none.
"We faced a kid we're going to see on TV," Sea Dogs
Manager Ron Johnson said.
"That young man has real good stuff.
He looked like he was trying to get a feel for his pitches in
the first inning.
"After he got that feel, he dominated us."
As for not making a move on this homestand, Johnson said, "It's
unfortunate.
But I can't get on these guys for that. (Not when) you face someone
who throws the ball like that."
Portland starter Kason Gabbard (0-2) had been ill, and he was
not sharp from the start.
He gave up four runs on four hits and a walk in 2-1/3 innings.
Akron (37-46) got three insurance runs in the ninth.
In the bottom of the first, Sheldon Fulse greeted Carmona with
a double off the wall in right-center and Mike Lockwood reached
on a bunt single.
Both runners came home on Brett
Roneberg's sacrifice fly
and Jeff Bailey's double.
Except for the first inning and post-game fireworks, there was
little to excite the Hadlock crowd, save for an explosion from
Akron Manager Brad Komminsk.
In the fifth inning, Fulse dove for a Ben Francisco sinking line
drive in center field.
The ball appeared to drop, but Fulse came up with it and base
umpire Brent Rice signaled a catch.
Francisco was ejected for arguing the call.
Komminsk also spoke to Rice and returned to the dugout.
After the inning, Komminsk walked back out and argued more with
Rice, repeatedly throwing his cap to the ground.
When Komminsk got ejected, he walked through the gates, then threw
some rubber lobsters - used in the Lob-a-Lobster game - onto the
field.
After Carmona finished his six-inning stint, Akron used three
relievers to shut down the Sea Dogs.
NOTES
The Sea Dogs do not play today, but leave this afternoon for a
three-game series at Trenton, N.J.
Left-hander Abe Alvarez (7-5) is slated to pitch the opener for
Portland against Trenton's Chien-Ming Wang (5-4).
The Sea Dogs return Friday for a four-game home series with Altoona,
then head into the All-Star break.
Shortstop Kenny Perez and third baseman John Hattig were given
the day off Sunday.
Three-run third anchors Aeros' win
Ryan Ludwick drove in three runs, David Wallace homered and Fausto
Carmona pitched six strong innings as the Akron Aeros defeated
the Portland Sea Dogs, 7-2, Sunday in an Eastern League game in
Portland, Maine.
Sheldon Fulse and Jeff Bailey doubled as the Sea Dogs grabbed
a 2-0 lead in the first inning.
The Aeros scored one run in the second inning and took command
in the third when Wallace's leadoff homer sparked a three-run
rally.
Carmona (2-3) struck out seven, walked none and allowed two runs
on four hits over six innings.
Portland starter Kason Gabbard (0-2) took the loss.
SEA DOGS FALL SHORT ON INDEPENDENCE DAY
Sea Dogs Fall to Akron, 7-2 Before Sellout Crowd
Fausto Carmona allowed only four hits over six innings and retired
16 of the final 17 batters he faced as the Akron Aeros topped
the Portland Sea Dogs, 7-2 on the Fourth of July before a sellout
crowd at Hadlock Field.
Jeff Bailey went 2-for-4 with a double and an RBI, reaching base
multiple times for the ninth consecutive game.
Colin Young fired 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, retiring eight
of the nine batters he faced.
James Johnson added two scoreless innings of relief.
Portland scored twice in the first inning - Sheldon Fulse doubled,
Mike Lockwood singled, Brett
Roneberg hit a sacrifice fly
and Bailey doubled to make it 2-0.
But Portland managed only one more runner past first base the
rest of the game.
Ryan Ludwick knocked in three runs for the Aeros, who handed the
Sea Dogs a seventh loss in the last ten games.
