No fooling Bailey twice as Sea Dogs slide past Aeros

Jeff Bailey remembered.
He struck out in the seventh inning on a full-count slider from Akron pitcher Lee Gronkiewicz.

In the ninth inning, with a runner on base and the Portland Sea Dogs down 6-5, Bailey faced Gronkiewicz again.
Five pitches later, it was another full count.

Bailey looked for the slider and ripped it over the Maine Monster for a two-run, winning homer to push Portland past the Akron Aeros 7-6 Thursday night before 6,212 at Hadlock Field.

"I got to 3-2 and I figured he would throw a slider again," Bailey said.
"I was just looking for him to hang it - and it hung it a little bit.
"And I got it. I didn't know if it would be high enough. I knew I hit it hard enough. It just kept climbing."

With his teammates and the Hadlock crowd - which included Bailey's parents and grandmother from Portland, Ore. - watching, the ball landed in the screen above the wall.

"What can you say about Jeff Bailey?
He has delivered so many key hits," Portland Manager Ron Johnson said.

Bailey also had a two-run double and is on a 12-game hitting streak.
He is batting .323 with 12 homers and 47 RBI.

Thursday marked the Double-A debut of right-handed pitcher Beau Vaughan, 23, who was called up from lower Class A Augusta, Ga.
Vaughan, the second pitcher drafted by Boston last year (after Abe Alvarez), in the third round, was filling in for Chris Smith.

The Red Sox are strictly limiting Smith's innings in his first full pro season.

The book on Vaughan, 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds, is that he is strong but in need of command.
He showed off a low-90's fastball Thursday, striking out four in 3-2/3 innings.
He also walked five and gave up five hits - including back-to-back home runs in the fourth.

Ben Francisco's three-run blast sailed over the Monster, while Michael Aubrey's solo shot landed in the right-field bullpen.

That hit chased Vaughan with Akron up, 5-1.

"I was really impressed with Beau Vaughan," Johnson said.
"I know he (struggles with his) command.
But for a guy coming up from the low level, he has some quality stuff."

Vaughan, who has good numbers in Augusta (3-1, 2.48 ERA), was lifted off the hook in the bottom of the fourth, when the Sea Dogs scored four runs to tie it.

Akron starter Victor Kleine, who allowed one run in the first (Sheldon Fulse walk, Mike Lockwood double and Mike O'Keefe RBI single), had settled down until the fourth.
Portland sent nine batters to the plate.
John Hattig started with a walk - Sean McGowan doubled - Kenny Perez lifted a sacrifice fly to center (score: 5-2) - Edgar Martinez singled - Joe Kilburg walked - Fulse singled in a run (5-3).
Carl Sadler relieved and, with two outs, Bailey swatted a two-run double down the left-field line (5-5).

Reliever Bo Donaldson followed Vaughan and held Akron hitless over 2-1/3 innings, striking out five.

"Our bullpen is starting to roll a little bit," Johnson said.

Juan Perez pitched the final three innings.

In the top of the ninth, Francisco led off with an infield single.
Aubrey walked on four pitches, and Josh Bard sacrificed them both over, setting up Jason Cooper's groundout RBI to short.

Fulse led off the bottom of the ninth with a single to right.
Mike Lockwood, after fouling off a bunt try for strike two, flied to the warning track in left field.
Then came Bailey and his memory of a slider.

NOTES
Bypassing Smith in the rotation is standard Red Sox procedure, according to Boston Farm Director Ben Cherington.
"It's his first full professional season, and we have a certain amount of innings we want him at," Cherington said.
"It will probably happen with Alvarez later in the year."
Sea Dogs top Aeros with homer in bottom of ninth
Jeff Bailey's two-run home run with one out in the bottom of the ninth inning gave the Portland Sea Dogs a 7-6 victory over the Aeros on Thursday night in an Eastern League game in Portland, Maine.
Akron had taken a 6-5 lead in the top of ninth when Ben Francisco scored on a groundout.
Bailey drove in four runs with two hits, including his 12th home run.
Francisco and Michael Aubrey homered for Akron.
The two teams play the second of a four-game series tonight at 7.

BAILEY HITS WALKOFF WINNER IN ANOTHER SEA DOGS COMEBACK
Portland's 7-6 Win the Fifth Ninth Inning Comeback Win in 3 Weeks

Jeff Bailey hit a walkoff two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth inning, lifting the Portland Sea Dogs to a thrilling 7-6 win over the Akron Aeros before 6,212 fans at Hadlock Field Thursday night.

Bailey also hit a game-tying two-run double in the fourth inning to finish with four RBI.

He extended his hit streak to 12 games - during which he has a .419 average (18 for 43), 11 extra-base hits, five home runs, 14 runs scored and 11 RBI.

Akron scored a run in the ninth inning on an infield hit, walk, sacrifice bunt and infield out to take a 6-5 lead.

Sheldon Fulse hit a leadoff single off Lee Gronkiewicz (1-2) to begin the home ninth, leading to Bailey's one-out homer.

It was the fifth time in the last three weeks the Sea Dogs rallied to win a game when trailing entering the ninth inning.

Trailing 5-1 in the fourth inning, Portland tied the game with four runs.
Kenny Perez drove in a run with a sacrifice fly and Fulse singled in a run.
Bailey capped the inning with a two-out, two-run double.

Beau Vaughan allowed five hits, five walks and five runs in 3.2 innings in his Double-A debut.

Bo Donaldson fired 2.1 scoreless, hitless innings of relief with five strikeouts and Juan Perez (4-0) allowed only one hit and a run in three innings to earn the win.
