Game Reports
Extra out proves costly as Dogs' skid continues

It was a great pitch for a strikeout.
And, in fact, with two outs, Kason Gabbard's low curveball got Jake Wald swinging for strike three.
But the ball bounced off catcher Jeff Bailey's glove and got past him, allowing a run to score and leaving two more runners on the bases.
Julian Benavidez followed with a two-run double, giving Norwich a 3-0 lead in the fourth inning on the way to a 6-2 victory over Portland Tuesday night before 5,806 at Hadlock Field.

The hard-luck loss was the fifth in a row for the Sea Dogs.

"It was a tough pitch to handle, in the dirt," said Gabbard (0-1).

The Sea Dogs, recently nearing the .500 mark, dropped to 35-43, last in the Eastern League Northern Division.
Third-place Norwich improved to 40-37.

While the passed ball was costly, the Sea Dogs' offense provided little help, getting six hits and two runs off Norwich starter Chris Begg (5-1) over 7-2/3 innings.

Begg, 23, has been a pleasant surprise this season after 3-1/2 seasons in independent leagues.

Kenny Perez scored Portland's first run on a groundout by Sheldon Fulse in the fifth inning, and Mike Lockwood hit a home run in the eighth to chase Begg.

Lockwood continues to shine since coming to the Sea Dogs after he was acquired in a trade from the Oakland Athletics.
In 10 games, he is batting .341.

Norwich got its final three runs in the ninth against James Johnson with two hits, two walks and a passed ball.

Gabbard, 22, was making only his third start, having been called up from Class A Sarasota to replace the sore-armed Jerome Gamble.
Gabbard allowed only four hits while striking out seven in five innings.

"He had nice control of his fastball and his breaking ball was real good," Portland Manager Ron Johnson said.
"This is a young man we're talking about. He has composure and a real idea of how to pitch."

Gabbard pitched out of a jam in the second inning, striking out two batters with the bases loaded.

In the fourth, Gabbard allowed runners on first and third with one out.
He then struck out Justin Knoedler and Wald, but the passed ball kept the inning alive.

Portland made some solid defensive plays, including two in the sixth inning.
A perfect relay from Lockwood in left to shortstop Perez to Bailey at home plate nailed Julio Cordido, who was trying to score on a double by Knoedler.
Brett Roneberg followed with a diving catch in right.

Sea Dogs reliever Ryan Cameron allowed one hit in three scoreless innings before Johnson entered in the ninth.

NOTES
Give Bailey credit for honesty.
Gabbard was charged with a wild pitch on the strikeout in the fourth.
Bailey called the scorekeeper after the game to say the ball bounced off his glove, and it was ruled a passed ball.
The Eastern League All-Star rosters are expected to be released soon.
Unofficially, Roneberg and pitcher Abe Alvarez already have made the Northern Division team in fan voting.

The Sea Dogs have totaled 204,075 fans through 35 games, the earliest the team has surpassed the 200,000 mark.
First baseman Mike O'Keefe left the game after feeling pain in his left leg on a groundout in the sixth.
Third baseman John Hattig, activated from the disabled list on Monday, sat out as a precaution.
He should play today.
Infielder Jesus Medrano had positive news on an X-ray of his bruised shoulder Tuesday.

PORTLAND DROPS FIFTH STRAIGHT GAME
3 Passed Balls Leads to 4 Unearned Runs in 6-2 Loss to Norwich

Three passed balls by Jeff Bailey led to four unearned runs and the Norwich Navigators handed the Portland Sea Dogs a fifth straight loss with a 6-2 decision on Tuesday night.

Kason Gabbard took the loss, despite firing five innings of four-hit ball.
Gabbard allowed three unearned runs and fanned seven in his third Double-A start to earn the Allied Bid Dog of the Game.

A Bailey passed ball on a swinging strike three with runners on the corners and two outs in the fourth inning allowed the first run of the game to score.
Norwich's Julian Benavidez followed with a two-run double to make it 3-0.

Chris Begg (5-1) allowed only six hits and two runs over 7.2 innings to earn his fifth win in seven Double-A starts this season.
Begg allowed a run in the fifth inning on a Kenny Perez walk, stolen base and two ground outs.

Mike Lockwood hit a solo home run in the eighth inning to draw Portland within a run, but reliever James Johnson allowed three runs in the ninth on two walks, an RBI triple by Justin Knoedler, an RBI double by Derin McMains and a third passed ball of the night by Bailey.
