Fisher Cats rally by Sea Dogs, 5-4

And things were going so well for the Portland Sea Dogs.

Right-hander Chris Smith, after missing a start with a sore right shoulder, breezed through his allotted pitches against New Hampshire.
Closer Joe Nelson worked a couple of early innings, with Red Sox General Manager Theo Epstein stopping by for a look-see, and was nicked for a rare run.

Still, the Sea Dogs seemed in control of the game.
Then it all fell apart.

The Fisher Cats tied it with three runs off Bo Donaldson in the bottom of the seventh.

They won it 5-4 on John-Ford Griffin's liner over the fence down the right-field line, also off Donaldson, to lead off the eighth.

New Hampshire, swept at Gill Stadium by the Sea Dogs late last month, backed up Friday night's 3-1 win to make it two in a row over the visitors.

The teams wrap up the series today at 1:05 p.m.

The Fisher Cats improved to 40-33.
Portland dropped to 35-40.

"It was like two games today," said Sea Dogs Manager Ron Johnson.
The Sea Dogs had the edge in the first.

The Fisher Cats, thanks to their bullpen (unscored upon in its last 17-1/3 innings) and some timely hits, got the win.

"Our pitching did a great job of keeping us in it," said New Hampshire Manager Mike Basso.

That included starter Ryan Houston, who rebounded nicely after falling behind 4-0 after three innings.

The Sea Dogs managed only two base runners after the third, none after the fifth.

"They completely shut us down," Johnson said.
"We score two or three more runs, we might put it away."

Jordan DeJong got the win with two hitless innings and Dan Jackson the save with a perfect ninth.

Mike Snyder led off the Fisher Cat seventh with a walk and after a strikeout, Jose Umbria knocked him in with an infield single.
There were two outs when Tyrell Godwin, who struck out his first three at-bats, came up with the big blow, a two-run shot into the Fisher Cat bullpen in right field for a 4-4 tie.

"We got a few balls up in the air and they went out," Basso said.

Portland's Jeff Bailey ripped a home run over the center-field fence with one out in the second to open the scoring.

The Sea Dogs scored three more in the third.
Raul Nieves singled and Jimmy Alvarez walked.
Mike Lockwood moved them up with a sacrifice and
Brett Roneberg scored them both with a single through a drawn-in infield.
One out later, Bailey doubled past the third-base bag
to score Roneberg all the way from first.

Smith threw 61 pitches (his limit was 65) in his four innings and the Fisher Cats could do little with them.
He struck out seven, walked one and gave up two singles.

In all, Sea Dog pitchers struck out 14.

Nelson pitched a perfect fifth, but the Fisher Cats - here's news - scored off him in the sixth.
Nelson had gone 21-2/3 innings and a full two months without giving up an earned run.
He had not given up a run of any kind in 15-2/3 innings, striking out 27 in that span.

That run, as it turned out, was just the beginning of Portland's problems.

NOTES
The Sea Dogs return home after today's game.
They open a seven-game homestand Monday night at 6 against Norwich.
The Navigators are in for three games, followed by Akron for four.

Eastern League Game Summary - Portland at New Hampshire

John-Ford Griffin jacked a game-winning solo home run in the bottom of the eighth inning as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats nipped the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-4, in an Eastern League Northern Division game Saturday.

Winners of two consecutive games, New Hampshire improved to 40-33.
Meanwhile, Portland has dropped two straight and stands at 35-40.

After falling behind 4-0 through five innings, New Hampshire plated one in the sixth, three in the seventh and Griffin won it in the eighth inning.

Jordan DeJong (3-1) worked two innings of scoreless relief to earn the victory.

Dan Jackson nailed down his third save with a scoreless ninth inning.

Losing pitcher Bo Donaldson (1-3) gave up four runs on five hits in two innings.

In the loss,
Brett Roneberg drove in a pair of runs and Jeff Bailey went 2- for-4 with a solo home run.

Portland and New Hampshire are scheduled to play again Sunday afternoon.

SEA DOGS GIVES ONE AWAY AT NEW HAMPSHIRE
2 Late Home Runs Gives F-Cats a 5-4 Win

Tyrell Godwin hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning and John-Ford Griffin hit a go-ahead home run in the eighth inning as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats rallied from a four-run deficit to beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-4 on Saturday afternoon.

Chris Smith fired four shutout innings, fanning seven while allowing only two hits, in his return to the Sea Dogs rotation.

Jeff Bailey homered, doubled and drove in two runs and
Brett Roneberg hit a two-run single for the Dogs.

Bailey's tenth home run of the year gave Portland a 1-0 lead in the second inning.

Roneberg's two-run hit and Bailey's RBI double in the third extended the advantage to 4-0.

Joe Nelson entered in the fifth inning and allowed a run in two innings, ending his scoreless inning streak at 15.2 frames.
It was the first earned run he allowed in two months.

Leading 4-1, Bo Donaldson (1-3) entered in the seventh inning and allowed three runs in the frame.
A bloop double, balk and Jose Umbria infield hit scored a run, setting up Godwin's wind-blown home run to right field that tied the game.

Starting the eighth, Griffin launched a home run over the short wall in right field to give the F-Cats the win.

Jordan DeJong (3-1) pitched two scoreless innings of relief for the win and Dan Jackson pitched a perfect inning for the save.

Portland did not put a runner on base after the fifth inning.

Godwin emerges Fisher Cats hero

Two strikes away from wearing the Golden Sombrero, Tyrell Godwin instead ended up wearing the mantle of hero yesterday as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats rallied to beat the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-4, in front of a sellout crowd of 4,250 at Gill Stadium.

Godwin had struck out in his first three at-bats when he went up to the plate with one on and two outs in the seventh inning.
After taking strike one from Portland reliever Bo Donaldson, Godwin lined a two-run home run into the Fishers bullpen beyond right field to tie the game at 4-all.

John-Ford Griffin completed the comeback when he led off the eighth by driving a 3-2 pitch from Donaldson down the right field line for his team-leading 11th homer of the year.
It was the second homer in as many games for Griffin, who was 2-for-4 with two RBIs.

After starter Ryan Houston gave up four runs in six innings, two relievers held the Sea Dogs scoreless the rest of the way.

The bullpen has now strung together 17 shutout innings despite recently losing their closer (Adam Peterson) and top setup man (Kevin Frederick) to promotions.

Jordan DeJong picked up the win, working two scoreless innings, while Dan Jackson pitched a one-two-three ninth for his third save of the year.

The comeback spoiled strong efforts by Portland’s Chris Smith and Jeff Bailey.
Bailey, a veteran catcher, hit his third home run at Gill Stadium and drove in two runs, while Smith threw five shutout innings.

Bailey, who hit two home runs here in May, put the Sea Dogs up 1-0 in the second inning with his 10th home run of the year.
He added a run-scoring double in a three-run third inning that bumped the lead to 4-0.

Smith, a 23-yearold righty considered one of the top pitching prospects in the Boston system, missed his last start with tightness in his shoulder.
Limited to a pitch count yesterday, Smith threw five innings of shutout ball before being relieved by Joe Nelson.

Bailey put the first run up on the board for the Sea Dogs in the second inning when he deposited a Houston pitch over the rotating signage in center.

The Sea Dogs got to Houston again in the third when Raul Nieves, the No. 9 hitter, started the rally with a leadoff single.
After Jimmy Alvarez walked, Mick Lockwood moved both runners up with a sacrifice,
setting up Brett Roneberg’s two-run single past a drawn-in infield.
Bailey followed with a lined double down the left field line.
Only a great play by second baseman Dominic Rich ranging far to his right for a ground ball ended the inning.

An infield error put Smith in a first-and-third, one-out jam in the fifth, but he worked out of it by picking off Maikel Jova at first base and striking out Mike Snyder to end the inning.

The Fishers broke up the shutout in the sixth inning when they touched up Nelson for his first earned run allowed in two months.
Nelson, who has 13 saves, walked Rich with one out and gave up a two-out, run-scoring single to Griffin.
He had gone 21 innings without allowing an earned run and 15 innings without allowing a run.

The Fishers were still down 4-1 in the seventh when Mike Snyder doubled to lead off the inning.
He took third on a balk by Donaldson and scored on Jose Umbria’s infield single.
That set up Godwin’s second home run of the season.

Fisher Cats Erase 4-0 Deficit to Beat Sea Dogs 5-4

Tyrell Godwin hit a game-tying home run in the seventh inning, and John-Ford Griffin broke up the tie with a solo blast in the eighth inning as the New Hampshire Fisher Cats erased a 4-0 deficit to knock off the Portland Sea Dogs 5-4 at a sold-out Gill Stadium Saturday night.

Portland pitcher Bo Donaldson (1-3) gave up both home runs to suffer the loss.

Godwin, who had not hit a home run since May 5, hit an 0-1 pitch from Donaldson into the Fisher Cats bullpen to tie the game 4-4 in the 7th.

Leading off the eighth inning, Griffin took a 3-2 pitch over the right-field wall onto Maple Street to give New Hampshire a 5-4 lead.
It was Griffin's team-leading 11th homer of the season and his fourth in his last five games.

New Hampshire (40-33) won its sixth straight home game while rallying from its largest deficit in a victory all season.

Mike Snyder led off the seventh inning with a double against Donaldson that was nearly caught by left-fielder George Lombard.
Snyder scored on Jose Umbria's infield single to make the score 4-2.
Umbria scored on the Godwin shot.

Right-hander Jordan DeJong (3-1) worked two scoreless innings for the win, and Dan Jackson worked a perfect ninth inning for his third save, and first since May 1.

The New Hampshire bullpen has now recorded 18-1/3 consecutive innings without allowing a run.

Portland (35-40) built its 4-0 lead in the first three innings.

Catcher Jeff Bailey hit a solo home run off New Hampshire starter Ryan Houston in the second inning and drove in another run with a two-out double in the third inning.

Brett Roneberg added a two-run single for the Sea Dogs, who went hitless over the final five innings.

Sea Dogs starter Chris Smith struck out seven Fisher Cats over four innings to extend his Eastern League-leading total to 85.

New Hampshire went over the 100,000 attendance mark for the season, reaching 102,121 for the year.

Another capacity crowd is expected for the series finale, as left-hander Gustavo Chacin (6-2, 4.88) pitches for the Fisher Cats against Sea Dogs right-hander Josh Stevens (3-5, 5.13).
