Game Reports
Dogs win a game of goofs

It is not a game of perfection.
Mistakes are made in baseball, and sometimes the outcome depends on how you recover.
In baseball lingo, it's called picking up the other guy.

On a gorgeous Thursday at Hadlock Field, the Portland Sea Dogs picked up Josh Stevens in a 7-5 victory against the Bowie Baysox, before 5,525 fans.

Stevens (3-5) pitched well except for the third inning, when he allowed four runs.
Stevens forgot to cover first base on a grounder, which helped fuel the rally.

"It was a brain cramp," Stevens said.
"I saw the ball and didn't move my feet."

Conversely, when the Baysox made a major goof, they didn't recover.
Leading 4-3 with two outs and no one on in the fourth, four Baysox fielders converged on a short fly to center.
They let it drop and Portland followed with two RBI hits, making the score 5-4.

"Just a miscommunication," Bowie second baseman James Lofton said.

Mike O'Keefe's two-run single in the seventh gave Portland all the insurance it needed.

Stevens rebounded well.
He faced only 17 batters in his last five innings.
In all, Stevens allowed nine hits, five in the third, four runs and no walks in eight innings.

"Josh shot himself in the foot and gave up four runs," Sea Dogs Manager Ron Johnson said.
"But then he shut the door on them.
A very good outing."

As Johnson spoke, he opened a card and present on his desk - a Father's Day gift from his kids, who won't see their dad for 10 days.

The Sea Dogs begin an 11-game, 10-day trip today, starting in Binghamton, N.Y.

The Sea Dogs (31-34) went 4-3 on this homestand, which tickled Johnson, who has three starters on the disabled list - second baseman Jesus Medrano, third baseman John Hattig and outfielder Sheldon Fulse.

"With three starters out, you expect to scuffle," Johnson said.
"I couldn't be more pleased that we could hover around the .500 mark.
Other guys had to step up."

O'Keefe (2 for 4, triple) was one of the five Sea Dogs with multiple hits, with Joe Kilburg (2 for 4, RBI), Jimmy Alvarez (2 for 3, RBI),
Brett Roneberg (2 for 3, two runs) and George Lombard (2 for 4, RBI).
Mike Campo (two RBI) hit a home run and a sacrifice fly.

O'Keefe also starred at first base.
In the first, he dived to catch a line drive, then doubled the runner off second.
In the third, with Bowie down 2-1 and two runners on, O'Keefe dived again to stop a grounder.
When he turned to toss the ball to first, Stevens wasn't there.

Stevens then allowed a two-run double to Kris Wilken and a groundout RBI as Bowie took a 4-2 lead.

But in the fourth, after an O'Keefe triple and Campo's sacrifice, Eric Johnson popped up with two outs.
Four Bowie players watched the ball fall and worse, no one covered second as Johnson hustled for a double.

"I thought it would be caught but I just ran it out," Johnson said.

Kilburg and Alvarez followed with RBI hits, and Portland led for good.

"It's tough to go out there having not done your job, like cover first base (and) give up four runs," Stevens said.
"But to get the runs and the lead back, it erases all that, and I can just go out and pitch like I'm used to."

NOTES
First baseman Sean McGowan missed the game to get his sore arm diagnosed in Boston.
He has a pulled biceps tendon and will be strictly a designated hitter for at least two weeks.
The Sea Dogs left for their longest trip of the season.
Portland will play a total of 11 games in Binghamton, N.Y.; Erie, Pa.; and Manchester, N.H.
Binghamton leads the Northern Division by 5-1/2 games but just lost two of its best players, David Wright and Prentice Redman, to Triple-A.
The Sea Dogs will return to Hadlock for a 6 p.m. game June 28 against Norwich.

DOGS RALLY PAST BOWIE, 7-5
Portland Competes Winning Homestand

Josh Stevens pitched eight strong innings and Jimmy Alvarez drilled a go-ahead RBI double to cap a three-run fourth inning as the Portland Sea Dogs rallied for a 7-5 win over the Bowie Baysox on Thursday afternoon.

Stevens (3-5) allowed eight hits and four runs over eight innings to snap a personal four-game losing streak.

Alvarez finished 2-for-3 with a single, double, walk, run scored and RBI.

Portland took an early lead off Dave Crouthers (5-2) on a George Lombard RBI double in the first inning and Mike Campo's fifth home run of the year in the second frame.

Bowie scored four runs off Stevens on five straight hits to begin the third inning.

But the right-hander retired 15 of the final 18 batters he faced to earn the win.

Portland scored three times in the fourth inning on Campo's sacrifice fly and consecutive run-scoring hits from Joe Kilburg and Alvarez.

Mike O'Keefe added a two-run single in the eighth inning for insurance.

Brett Roneberg singled twice, walked and scored twice.
