Game Reports
O'Keefe is oh, so good in a win

Mike O'Keefe flew up to Orono on a recruiting visit in 1996.
But the University of Maine was not for him.
"It was in the middle of nowhere," he said with a chuckle.

O'Keefe's a city kid from Connecticut.
He opted for Providence College.
But after Providence and five years with the Angels' organization, O'Keefe finally made it to Maine.

O'Keefe is applying his skills for the Portland Sea Dogs and Thursday night, that included two RBI and the winning home run in a 7-2 victory against the Bowie Baysox before 6,499 at Hadlock Field.

With his leadoff home run in the sixth, O'Keefe broke a 2-2 tie and keyed a five-run inning.

The Sea Dogs outhit the Baysox, 14-5.

Sean McGowan (2 for 5) enjoyed two RBI.
George Lombard hit a single and a triple.
Jeff Bailey (2 for 3) knocked in a run.
Kenny Perez and Edgar Martinez had two hits each.

"It was good to get our bats started," O'Keefe said.
"The bats have been kind of dead lately."

The pitching also proved fine.

Starter Chris Smith lasted five innings.
He didn't show his top command (three walks), but gave up only four hits and two runs (one earned).
He struck out six, putting him back in the league lead with 78.

Smith had reason to get discouraged.
One run came when a fly dropped in short left.
The other run followed a catcher's interference call.

"Smitty has done a real nice job of not allowing things like that to control him," Portland Manager Ron Johnson said.

Ryan Larson (3-0) got the win with two innings of one-hit relief.

Juan Perez struck out two in the eighth, as did Joe Nelson in the ninth.
Nelson was just activated from the disabled list after a hamstring strain.

O'Keefe, a left-handed batter, led off the sixth and fell behind 0-2 to left-hander Scott Rice (4-4).
O'Keefe readied himself for anything and got a curveball inside.
He spanked it to the light pole inside the Portland bullpen in right field.
A 12th-round draft pick of the Angels in 1999, O'Keefe asked for his release this spring when he didn't see himself in Anaheim's plans.

NOTES
John Hattig (back spasms) went on the disabled list.
Sheldon Fulse (sore hip) leaves today for Fort Myers, Fla., to begin rehab.
James Lofton, a former Red Sox minor-league second baseman, was added to the Bowie roster.
Lofton played for independent Nashua last year, with Sea Dogs infielder Joe Kilburg.
A night after the Scarborough Little League invaded Hadlock, the Windham Little League was saluted.
O'Keefe's home run hit the Portland Saab sign, meaning the car dealer will donate $100 to the Make-a-Wish Foundation.
The Sea Dogs have to remove another jersey from Hadlock Field (which represents former players now with the Red Sox), now that reliever Anastacio Martinez has been returned to Pawtucket.

SEA DOGS RALLY TO TOP BAYSOX

O'Keefe also drove in a run with a RBI single in the fourth frame to earn the Allied Big Dog of the Game Award.

Ryan Larson (3-0) earned the win in relief with two shutout innings after Chris Smith allowed two runs (one earned) in five frames.

Smith fanned six to regain the Eastern League lead in strikeouts with 78, three more than Erie's Wilfredo Ledezma.

Down 2-0, the Sea Dogs tied it with runs in the fourth and fifth innings.
O'Keefe singled in a run to make it 2-1 and Sean McGowan drilled a run-scoring single to tie it in the fifth frame.

Portland sent 10 men to the plate in the sixth inning to take the lead for good.

O'Keefe homered on an 0-2 pitch off Scott Rice (4-4), who then allowed three straight hits to Kenny Perez (single), Edgar Martinez (RBI double) and Jimmy Alvarez (RBI double).
McGowan and Jeff Bailey capped the frame with run-scoring singles.

Portland pitchers fanned 12 in the game, including two by closer Joe Nelson.
The right-hander returned from the disabled list prior to the game after missing 11 games with a strained right hamstring.
