Out F9
Error
During the top of the innings, the Fisher Cats had a runner at
first base with two down - the next batter hit the ball into rightfield
- in the commentator's words, "Brett got a late jump on
that and appeared to slip to one knee as he started for the ball.
He looked undecided whether to dive or wait, and the ball hit
his body and trickled away. This allowed the runner to advance
to third base and it should be scored a hit and an error......and
it has been"
The runner scored later in the inning and was ruled an un-earned
run
Heard during the game
(1) As Brett came in for his first at-bat, the commentator said
that "After 'flirting' with the 300 mark for some time,
Brett is three for his last nineteen for an average of 0.158"
(......then he belted the home run!!! - exactly the "same
type" of conversation happened yesterday!!!)
(2) He also said "Brett
is the team leader with 35 x RBI's and equal leader with 10 x
home runs"
He immediately said "Brett now leads the team with eleven
round-trippers!!!"
(3) He also mentioned that
"Brett is in the Eastern League "Top 10" in
a number of batting categories"
(click
here for the details - as at Friday 4th June 2004)
(4) After his home run in his
first at-bat, the commentator said "that is Brett's first
homer off a lefthanded pitcher"
He went on to say "ten of Brett's eleven home runs and
thirty-one of his thirty-five runs-driven-in have come against
righthanders"

Every Sea Dog starter hit safely in the game and scored at least
one run.
Eight of the nine starters reached base twice in the win.

He has allowed 15 runs and 17 hits in eight innings against the

League, allowing six hits and four runs (three earned) in six
frames.
Eric Glaser pitched the final three innings for his first save.
Eastern League Game Summary - New Hampshire at Portland
Brett Roneberg
collected three hits, two RBI and scored twice as the Portland
Sea Dogs downed the New Hampshire Fisher Cats, 14-6 in an Eastern
League Northern Division game Saturday.
Roneberg started the scoring with a two-run home run in the bottom
of the first inning before Portland (25-29) plated nine runs in
the third inning en route to victory.
Abe Alvarez improved to 5-4 on the rubber for Portland after giving
up three earned runs and six hits in six innings.
He struck out three.
Edgar Martinez had two hits, including a home run, and two RBI,
Eric Johnson had two hits and two RBI and Mike Campo went 2-for-5
with two RBI and two runs scored for Portland.
Losing pitcher Gustavo Chacin (4-2) was touched for 10 runs and
seven hits in 2-1/3 innings of work for New Hampshire, which fell
to 28-26.
The Fisher Cats got two RBI from both Anton French and Victor
Valencia.
Portland pounds Fisher Cats, 14-6
Brett Roneberg
and Edgar Martinez homered and Kenny Perez knocked a bases-loaded
triple as the Portland Sea Dogs trounced the New Hampshire Fisher
Cats 14-6 Saturday in the Eastern League.
Doubles by Jesus Medrano, Mike Campo, John Hattig and Eric Johnson
also paced Portlands 15-hit attack.
Vic Valencia and Anton French drove in two runs apiece for the
Fisher Cats.
Roneberg homered with
a man aboard as Portland (25-29) grabbed a 3-0 lead in the first
inning.
Perezs triple drove in the first three runs in the Sea Dogs
nine-run second.
Campos two-run double was another scoring highlight, plus
the Sea Dogs capitalized on three walks and an error in the inning.
Martinezs homer was the big blow as Portland added solo
runs in the sixth and seventh innings.
Doubles by Danny Solano, Aaron Hill, John-Ford Griffin and Tyrell
Godwin were the key hits as the Fisher Cats (28-26) scored once
in the fourth and fifth innings and twice in the sixth and seventh.
Sea Dogs' offense goes off the charts
Before the Portland Sea Dogs batted in the third inning, the Hadlock
Field crowd watched a Belmont Stakes replay on the video board,
with Birdstone charging past Smarty Jones at the end.
There would be no such finish at the ballpark.
The Sea Dogs established themselves as the early frontrunner Saturday,
and would not be caught, downing the New Hampshire Fisher Cats
14-6, before a cheered-out crowd of 6,726.
By the third inning, every Sea Dogs player had chugged across
home plate.
It was that kind of night for Portland.
The home team scored nine in the third inning, for a 12-0 lead.
It was time to cruise.
Starter Abe Alvarez (5-4) continually threw strikes (one walk)
and picked up the victory, scattering three earned runs and six
hits over six innings.
By the time Alvarez gave up his first hit, in the fourth, he had
a 12-run cushion.
"It makes me more relaxed," Alvarez said.
"I just go out there, throw strikes, let them hit the ball,
and let my defense work. There is no pressure."
Brett Roneberg hit his
team-leading 11th home run,
and Edgar Martinez hit his first homer this year.
The win closes the Sea Dogs (25-29) to within three games of second-place
New Hampshire (28-26) in the Eastern League Northern Division.
The two teams complete their series at 1.00p.m. today, if the
rain showers stay away.
New Hampshire will start Todd Ozias, who has not yet faced the
Sea Dogs.
Gustavo Chacin (4-2) wishes he could say the same thing.
Against other Eastern League teams, Chacin is 4-0 with a 2.59
ERA.
Against the Sea Dogs, Chacin is 0-2 with a 16.88 ERA.
"He's pitched well for us, but he got his fastball up,"
New Hampshire Manager Mike Basso said.
"When you elevate balls against a good hitting team like
Portland, you get hurt."
The normally-controlled Chacin walked six.
After walking Mike Campo
in the first, Roneberg sent a ball into the trees beyond the right-field
fence for the second straight night.
His 11th homer tied him for fifth in the league, as well as marking
his best homer production since 2001, when he hit 11 in Class
A, and then five more when he was promoted to the Sea Dogs (while
with the Marlins organization).
"I remember that. It was a good time," Roneberg said.
"I came up here and finished strong. Hopefully, I can keep
this going."
Roneberg went 3 for 5 on Saturday.
The two-hit club included Campo, Jesus Medrano, Jeff Bailey, Eric
Johnson and Martinez.
Kenny Perez got one hit - a three-run triple to open up the game
in the third.
Eric Glaser pitched the last three innings (two hits, two runs)
for his first save.
When Glaser allowed two runs in the seventh - closing the score
to 13-6 - Sea Dogs Manager Ron Johnson got a little worried.
"We were running short of pitchers because we pitched a lot
of guys (five) Friday," he said.
"But Glaze came through. It was just a well-played game."
Portland shined in the field, especially in the first inning with
Perez, the shortstop, and Medrano, the second baseman, both making
diving stops and throws for outs.
The game started with Anton French popping up a bunt.
Alvarez caught it, but tripped over first-baseman Sean McGowan,
who hit the ground to avoid a collision.
"We almost lost Abe after the first pitch," McGowan
said.
"But I avoided his knees. I knew he was alright."
Johnson laughed, albeit nervously, about the play.
"How about that," he said, rolling his eyes.
Sea Dogs Pound Fisher Cats 14-6 to even series in Portland
One day after losing on a two-out, two-run home run in the ninth
inning, the Portland Sea Dogs ensured there would be no such drama
Saturday night in a 14-6 rout of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats
at Hadlock Field.
Portland beat New Hampshire for the fifth time in six meetings
and evened the three-game series at a game apiece.
Portland put the game away with a nine-run third inning, the most
runs issued by the Fisher Cats in any inning this season.
Every Sea Dog starter had at least one hit and one run scored
in the game.
Right fielder Brett
Roneberg (3-for-5, 2 RBI) smashed a first-inning home run for
the second consecutive contest, giving him four against the Fisher
Cats this year.
Shorstop Kenny Perez (1-5, 3 RBI) hit a bases-loaded triple in
the third inning, and catcher Edgar Martinez (2-5, 2 RBI) added
his first home run of the season, a solo blast in the 6th inning.
New Hampshire starter and loser Gustavo Chacin (4-2) allowed a
season-worst ten runs on five hits and six walks in two and one-third
innings.
Reliever Jordan DeJong went the next three and two-thirds innings,
issuing three runs on nine hits, the most hits allowed by a Fisher
Cat reliever this year.
New Hampshire center fielder Anton French drove in two runs with
separate ground outs.
Catcher Vic Valencia (1-for-3) added two RBIs, giving him four
in the series.
Third baseman Danny Solano (2-for-4, 2 runs) had his 14th multi-hit
game of the season, which leads the ballclub.
Left-hander Abe Alvarez (4-2) earned his second straight win over
the Fishers, surrendering four runs (three earned) in 6 innings.
Eric Glaser allowed two runs over the final three frames to pick
up his first save.
The Fisher Cats and Sea Dogs play the third and final game of
the series Sunday afternoon at 1.00pm.
Todd Ozias (4-2, 3.15) pitches against Chris Smith (4-2, 4.02).
