Not a bad day today.
I didn't expect to do to much as the conditions were terrible so it definately felt good to get one on a day like this.

Game Reports

Fisher Cats Tyrell Godwin runs for first base on a dropped third strike
Sea Dogs first baseman Sean McGowan took the throw from home for the out

Gamble gets Dogs rolling again, 5-1

Here's how well things went for the Sea Dogs on Saturday:
Right-hander Jerome Gamble matched his longest pitching stint of his seven-year pro career by going seven innings.
And the Sea Dogs even homered.

It all added up to a 5-1 win over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in front of 3,499 at Gill Stadium.

The streaky Sea Dogs won their second straight in the series, their fourth straight road game, and improved to 21-27 for the season.

New Hampshire fell to 26-21.

The series continues this afternoon with Portland left-hander Abe Alvarez (3-4, 4.10 ERA) going against right-hander Francisco Rosario (0-1, 4.50).
The teams then finish things off Monday night in 7:05 start.

The Sea Dogs came here having lost three straight games to Binghamton at home.

Before that, they had won five straight.

Thanks largely to Gamble,
right fielder Brett Roneberg and catcher Jeff Bailey, they are back on a winning streak.

Roneberg's eighth home run of the season to right field in the third inning was Portland's first in 70 innings.

Bailey added a two-run, opposite-field homer - his fifth - down the line in right in the eighth.

Gamble (4-2) allowed four hits, struck out five and walked only one.
He has won his last three starts and has given up two earned runs in his last 19 innings.

"I used my off-speed pitches a lot, which helped me keep guys off my fastball," Gamble said.
"And I kept getting quick outs."

Gamble and Eric Glaser, who came on for the final two innings, retired 16 of the last 17 Fisher Cat batters.

The one guy who did reach, Aaron Hill on a seventh-inning single, was erased on a double play.

It was that efficient a day for the Dogs, who handed New Hampshire righty Cam Reimers (6-2) only his second loss.

The Fisher Cats actually struck first.
Tyrell Godwin walked to lead off the game, stole second, went to third on Dominic Rich's single and scored on John-Ford Griffin's sacrifice fly to left.

The home team would get nothing else.

The Sea Dogs came right back with a pair of runs in the top of the second.
John Hattig and Bailey singled, and after a strikeout, Eric Johnson walked to load the bases.
Hattig scored on a sacrifice fly to center by Raul Nieves.
Bailey, who moved to third on the sacrifice fly, scored the winning run on a wild pitch.

"That was a big inning for us, to come back and get something across and get back that momentum," said Portland Manager Ron Johnson.
"Or at least stop it a bit. And after that, Jerome was outstanding. . . . He had a good, solid change-up. His breaking ball had depth.
From the third inning through the seventh, everything was, 'Boom, boom.'
He threw a lot of first-pitch strikes."

Roneberg's homer made it 3-1 in the third.

And it was mostly Gamble and Glasier from there.

NOTES
Bailey had a pair of hits for the Sea Dogs.
Hattig had a hit and two walks and picked up a bonus hit, too.
A scoring change from Portland's 6-3 win Friday night gave him three hits in that game.
He has reached safely in seven of eight plate appearances in the series.
Gamble underwent Tommy John surgery in 2001 and was out for 15 months.
"The major part for me is staying healthy and getting innings," he said.
He said the only other time he pitched seven innings in a game was in 1999.
Gamble leads the Dogs with 49 1/3 innings pitched.

Fishers dogged again, lose 5-1

Another day, another reminder from the Portland Sea Dogs this is Red Sox country.

Boston’s Double-A affiliate knocked off one of the league’s best pitchers and cracked a pair of home runs, earning a 5-1 victory before 3,499 fans yesterday.

A large group of Portland fans, sitting mostly in the left-field bleacher area, had plenty to cheer about on a breezy day at Gill Stadium.

The Sea Dogs, now 21-27, have shown little evidence of being a last-place team since arriving in Manchester on Friday.

Right-hander Jerome Gamble (4-2) pitched the longest outing of his pro career, holding the Fisher Cats to one run and four hits through seven innings.

A home run by Brett Roneberg - Portland’s first round-tripper in 70 innings - helped seal Gamble’s fourth win of the month.

Catcher Jeff Bailey launched a two-run homer over the right-field wall as the Sea Dogs scored a pair of runs against reliever Brandon League.

Fisher Cat starter Cam Reimers, looking to become the Eastern League’s first seven-game winner, worked five innings (five hits, three runs) and slipped to 6-2 on the season.

“Cam had eight flyball outs and two groundball outs. That’s non-Cam-like,” New Hampshire manager Mike Basso said.
“Cam fought his rhythm and his delivery all day. It was probably the first time all year he’s had a tough time with his delivery.
He just did a great job without his best stuff keeping us in the game.”

John-Ford Griffin lofted a sacrifice fly to plate Tyrell Godwin in the first inning.

Portland pitchers then proceeded to blank New Hampshire for the final eight innings, limiting the run-starved hosts to just four hits.

Basso had no explanation for his team’s recent lack of production at home.

The Fishers own a record of 13-13 at Gill Stadium, where they’ve averaged just two runs in the past three games.

Aaron Hill accounted for half of NH’s hits yesterday with a 2-for-3 afternoon.

No, Basso won’t be throwing any chairs or ranting like Lou Piniella to fire-up the Fisher Cats.
“I’m not a tosser,” he said.
“My biggest concern with the ball club is how they play. If I see the effort, and the hustle and the intensity, then I’m fine.”

Portland manager Ron Johnson, meanwhile, has enjoyed watching his team take over Gill Stadium.

Another large crowd - and plenty of Sea Dogs fans - are expected for today’s rematch at 1:05 p.m.

Portland sends its top pitching prospect, lefty Abe Alvarez, against New Hampshire’s power righty Francisco Rosario.

“We were talking about (fan support) last night. A guy was asking me if I was surprised by it, and I said no.
We understand what it’s like being in the Red Sox nation,” Johnson said.
“Red Sox fans are ridiculously phenomenal fans. We see it everywhere we go.”

Sea Dogs 5, Fisher Cats 1

Jeff Bailey and Brett Roneberg hit home runs and Jerome Gamble pitched seven strong innings as the Portland Sea Dogs downed the New Hampshire Fisher Cats 5-1 Saturday.

Portland scored the deciding run in the second inning when Bailey scored on a wild pitch by Cam Reimers (6-2), the losing pitcher.

Gamble (4-2) went seven innings, allowing four hits and one earned run while striking out five and walking one.

John-Ford Griffin gave New Hampshire a 1-0 lead in the first inning, driving in Tyrell Godwin with a sacrifice fly.

Portland answered with a pair of runs in the second inning,
and Roneberg´s eighth homer of the year increased the Portland lead to 3-1.

Bailey´s two-run homer in the eighth inning, his fifth, completed the scoring.

SEA DOGS WIN SECOND STRAIGHT IN NEW HAMPSHIRE
