Heard during the game
(1) During Brett's first at-bat the commentator said that "Brett has a twelve game hitting streak going which is the longest by a Sea Dog player since May/June 2003 and during the streak he is batting 0.337"

(2) He also mentioned a few Sea Dogs players that could be selected as the "Eastern League Player of the Week" and included Brett in this list for his batting streak, 7 x runs batted in and 7 x runs scored

**but later in the game he said that "Sheldon Fulse and Brett Roneberg will not get a look in now" - this was after John Hatting hit his second home run of the game with 5 x RBI's - and Hattig also hit two homers in yesterday's game with ? x RBI's!!!

(3) During the bottom of the first inning the Aeros had a runner on base - the next batter drove the ball into the rightfield corner - Brett fielded the ball and in the commentators words "started a perfect 9-to-4-to-2 relay throw to get the runner at the plate" (see the Game Report below)

(4) In the bottom of the second inning the Aeros had a runner at first base - the next batter drove the ball deep into the rightfield alley - Brett went after it and the commentator said "it looked like Roneberg had a bead on it but at the last minute he leaned back and it was over his head" - the runner at first base came around and scored and the batter reached third base on a double plus the extra base on the throw home - he then scored on a sacrifice fly by the next Aeros batter

(5) After Brett's hit in his third at-bat, the commentator said
(a) Brett has now extended his hitting streak to thirteen games and that is by far the longest for a Sea Dogs player this season
(b) This is now the longest hitting streak by a Sea Dogs player since July 2001 - and that was a sixteen game streak - the franchise record is twenty-one games
(c) In the Eastern League during this season, the longest streak has been fourteen games (ended yesterday)

Game Reports
Dogs follow Hattig's example

John Hattig became the first player in Portland Sea Dogs history to hit six home runs in a week, hitting two Sunday in a 10-3 victory over the Akron Aeros before a Mother's Day crowd of 5,056.

Hattig hit a two-run homer off Aeros starter Travis Foley and a three-run shot off Derrick Van Dusen, giving him a team-high eight for the season.
"It all started during our series against Harrisburg last week," said Hattig, the Boston Red Sox minor-league player of the year last season.
"I had an off day and the next game I had a good game, and it's just been snowballing."

Mike O'Keefe homered in the eighth inning for the Sea Dogs, then phoned his mom in Connecticut after the game to wish her a happy Mother's Day.

Designated hitter Sean McGowan was 3 for 5 and scored three runs, and Hattig, O'Keefe and Raul Nieves each had two hits.

"It seems like hitting is contagious," Sea Dogs Manager Ron Johnson said.
"Everyone is feeding off how well Hattig is hitting right now."

It was a short day for Foley (1-3), who allowed three hits in 1 2/3 innings.
It was the shortest outing for an Akron starter this season.

When Manager Brad Komminsk lifted Foley with two outs in the second inning, Portland led, 3-0.

Foley lost his second consecutive game and is 0-2 with a 7.47 ERA in four starts at home.

"Travis didn't have his command, and it's tough when you have to pitch from behind," Komminsk said.
"He had thrown a lot of pitches in those first two innings."

The Aeros had a chance to take the lead in the bottom of the first inning but couldn't capitalize.
With one out and Zach Sorensen at first after a walk, Franklin Gutierrez hit a ball to the right-field wall.
Sorensen tried to score from first, but the relay from Portland Sea Dogs right fielder Brett Roneberg to second baseman Joe Kilburg to catcher Jeff Bailey was perfect and Sorensen was called out after a collision at the plate for the second out.
Jason Cooper grounded out to end the inning.

Van Dusen also struggled, allowing six hits and six runs in three innings.

When he was relieved by Jose Vargas with two outs in the fifth, the Aeros trailed 9-2.

Vargas was effective in 2 1/3 scoreless innings, allowing just one hit and no walks while striking out three.

After Portland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, the Aeros got two in the bottom of the inning.
Ben Francisco doubled home Corey Smith and later scored on a sacrifice fly by Nate Grindell.

The Aeros' third run came on a solo homer by Grindell in the sixth.

Franklin Gutierrez was the only repeat hitter for the Aeros, with two doubles.

Portland starter Chris Smith improved to 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA, allowing two runs on six hits in five innings.

"We're extremely pleased with (Smith)," Johnson said.
"He doesn't have a whole lot of experience in professional ball, but he's really throwing the ball well.
"What impressed me the most today was that when we went ahead 3-0 and (Akron) came back and scored two runs, Chris didn't get rattled."

"I actually didn't feel like I was on (Sunday)," Smith said, "but I was happy with my ability to keep us in the game even after I gave up two runs."

The Sea Dogs' bullpen allowed just one hit in four innings, Grindell's homer off Jason Howell.

Sea Dogs slugger ruins pitchers' days
Two-home run attack leaves Aeros with ugly loss

Aeros starting pitcher Travis Foley and reliever Derrick Van Dusen felt the wrath of Portland's John Hattig on Sunday afternoon at Canal Park.

Hattig belted two home runs -- a two-run blast off Foley and a three-run smash off Van Dusen -- as the Sea Dogs pounded the Aeros 10-3 in front of a Mother's Day crowd of 5,056 fans.

Hattig picked the perfect day to make his mother proud.
With the two homers (he leads the team with eight), he became the first player in Sea Dogs history to hit six home runs in a week.

``It all started during our series against Harrisburg last week,'' said Hattig, who was the Boston Red Sox's minor-league Player of the Year last season.
``I had an off day, and the next game, I had a good game, and it's just been snowballing.''

As for Foley (1-3), it was a short day.
The right-hander lasted just 1 2/3 innings, allowing three runs on three hits.
It was the shortest outing for an Aeros starter this season.

When Aeros manager Brad Komminsk lifted Foley with two outs in the second inning, Portland (12-17) led 3-0.

Foley threw 48 pitches.
He lost his second consecutive game and is 0-2 with a 7.47 ERA at home (four starts).

``Travis didn't have his command, and it's tough when you have to pitch from behind,'' Komminsk said.
``He had thrown a lot of pitches in those first two innings.''

Van Dusen also had his share of struggles.
In three innings, he allowed six runs on six hits.

When he was relieved by Jose Vargas with two out in the fifth, the Aeros (15-14) trailed 9-2.

Vargas was effective in his 2 1/3 innings.
He gave up one hit, did not allow a run or a walk and registered three strikeouts.

When Portland jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the top of the second, the Aeros answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.
Corey Smith scored on a double by Ben Francisco, who later scored on a sacrifice fly to center field by Nate Grindell.

The Aeros' other run came in the sixth, on a solo homer by Grindell.

Franklin Gutierrez was the only Aeros' player with multiple hits.
He was 2-for-4 with two doubles.

Portland right-handed starter Chris Smith, in his first year at the Double-A level, improved his record to 3-0 with a 3.41 ERA.
He allowed two runs on six hits in five innings.

``We're extremely pleased with (Chris),'' Portland manager Ron Johnson said.
``He doesn't have a whole lot of experience in professional ball, but he's really throwing the ball well.
``What impressed me the most today was that when we went ahead 3-0 and (Akron) came back and scored two runs, Chris didn't get rattled.''

Said Smith: ``I actually didn't feel like I was on (today), but I was happy with my ability to keep us in the game even after I gave up two runs.''

The Sea Dogs' bullpen was also very effective.
After Smith left, Portland's relievers allowed just one hit in the last four innings, Grindell's homer off Jason Howell in the sixth.
The bullpen combined for one hit, one walk and five strikeouts.
