Dogs pull about-face

The Portland Sea Dogs did their best phoenix impersonation Sunday, beating the Norwich Navigators 12-2 before a delighted, sun-worshipping crowd of 6,195 at Hadlock Field.

Maybe it is a bit dramatic to say the Sea Dogs rose from the ashes to new life, but they had to pick themselves off the turf after being humbled 16-0 by the Navigators on Saturday.

"It's nice to answer," Portland Manager Ron Johnson said.
"As bad as Saturday was, this showed me a lot about the ballclub today. They obviously didn't care about that butt-whipping on Saturday. They came out and played very aggressive."

The Sea Dogs (8-14) still sit at the bottom of the Eastern League North Division standings, but they can take some satisfaction from Sunday.

They got some big hits among their total of 17, including home runs by Jeff Bailey and Mike O'Keefe and triples by Bailey and Sheldon Fulse.

Bailey (3 for 5) finished with four RBI.
Brett Roneberg (2 for 5) knocked in three.
Mike Campo hit a couple of doubles and scored three runs, and
Sean McGowan (3 for 5) knocked in two runs.

"You've got to come mentally prepared to play every ballgame or you're going to have it handed to you," McGowan said.
"When you do show up, fired up and ready to play, sometimes you hand it to them. I'd rather be on this side of it."

Portland starter Ryan Cameron (1-1) lived on the wild side, going to three-ball counts nine times.
But he was not about to deliver fastballs across the middle of the plate to this club.
Norwich, which leads the league in hitting, had scored 38 runs in the previous three days.
Cameron walked three, giving up five hits and one run in 5 1/3 innings.

"Ryan Cameron established the momentum of the game. He pitched today," said Johnson.
"They've got some good hitters, and Ryan commanded his off-speed stuff. He never gave in. All of a sudden you start seeing check swings, miss-hits. He disrupted their timing."

Portland turned two double plays for Cameron.
Bailey, the catcher, prevented a run in the first by quickly recovering a pitch that bounced a few feet away and tagging out Carlos Valderrama, who was trying to score from third.

Juan Perez, Portland's most reliable reliever, came on for 2 2/3 innings.
Perez gave up his first earned run of the season in the eighth, leaving his ERA at 0.62.

Charlie Weatherby pitched a no-hit, no-run ninth.

The Norwich pitching staff did not fare as well.
Josh Habel (0-3) gave up 10 hits and six runs in five innings.
Reliever Luke Anderson, who allowed four runs to take the loss in Portland's 11-9 win on Friday, gave up five more Sunday in one-third of an inning.

Every Portland player in the lineup got at least one hit.

The Sea Dogs made one harmless error after making four on Saturday.

"It was a trickle-down effect Saturday," McGowan said.
"We were all not having good at-bats. We played poor defense. It was a total team effort then, and it was a total team effort this game."

NOTES
The Sea Dogs begin a seven-game trip today in Harrisburg, Pa., before moving on to Akron, Ohio.
They return to Hadlock Field for a six-game homestand May 11-16.
Bailey has reached base in 16 of his last 22 plate appearances.
He also increased his team-leading RBI total to 15.

Sea Dogs Turn The Tables On Gators

Jeff Bailey had four RBI on a home run and a bases-clearing triple to lead the Portland Sea Dogs past the Norwich Navigators 12-2 on Sunday in the Eastern League.

The Sea Dogs (8-14) had 17 hits a day after Norwich (12-12) had beaten them 16-0 in the most lopsided loss in Portland's 11-year franchise history.

Portland starter Ryan Cameron (1-1) went 5 1/3 innings for the win, giving up one run on five hits while striking out four.

Josh Habel (0-3) took the loss for Norwich, giving up six runs and 10 hits in five innings.

Carlos Valderrama had two hits and stole three bases for the Navigators while Mike Cervenak was 2-for-2 with one RBI and one run scored.

GATORS BATS FINALLY SILENCED IN LOSS TO SEA DOGS
Portland beats Norwich 12-2 to earn series split

A day removed from dealing the Sea Dogs their most lopsided loss in team history, the Navigators saw it from the other side, losing to Portland 12-2 for a split of the four-game series in Portland.

Brett Ronenberg’s two-run single highlighted a three-run second inning and broke a 1-1 tie to put the Sea Dogs up for good.

Portland broke it open in a five-run sixth inning, with Jeff Bailey’s bases-loaded triple putting the game out of reach.
Bailey hit a solo homerun in the third to give Portland a then 5-1 lead.

Mike Cervenak went 2-2 with an RBI to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
