Game Reports
Dogs sputter again

Portland's offense continued to struggle, producing just three hits Saturday night in a 5-1 loss to the Bowie Baysox at Prince George's Field.

Portland (4-10) has lost four in a row, including the first two in a three-game series at Bowie.

The offensive totals over the past three games are anything but encouraging - four runs and 26 left on base.
On the season, the Sea Dogs are just 3 for 23 with runners in scoring position.

"We didn't play bad tonight," said Sea Dogs Manager Ron Johnson.
"The pitching is dominating us right now from an offensive standpoint. We're bending but we're not breaking."

Sea Dogs pitcher Jerome Gamble got into early trouble, walking Walter Young with one out in the second inning.
After striking out Kris Wilken, Gamble left a fastball over the middle of the plate that Eli Whiteside deposited over the center-field wall for a 2-0 lead.

It was the league-high 15th home run allowed this season by Portland pitching.

Woody Cliffords followed with a walk and stole second.
Octavio Martinez singled and Gamble hit Ed Rodgers to load the bases, but Gamble got Jose Morban to ground into a fielder's choice to end the threat.

"We're throwing a lot of pitches right now," said Johnson.
"I'd like to see it dip down a little bit, and it's going to as we go along with this season. We're going to see better outings."

Gamble got into more trouble in the fifth.
Morban led off with a single, stole second and scored on a single by Tony Mota.
Gamble struck out Young before getting replaced by Jason Howell.

"Jerome's stuff was good tonight," Johnson said, "but he threw a lot of pitches and that's what got him out of the ballgame."

Howell's first pitch got away from catcher Edgar Martinez, allowing Mota to advance to second.
Wilken looped a single to right scoring Mota, and Whiteside doubled to the wall in center to score Wilken and give Bowie a 5-0 lead.

The Portland bullpen has allowed a staggering 46 runs in 53 innings.

Bowie Manager Dave Trembley brought in Scott Rice in the sixth inning, even though starter Cory Morris had a no-hitter after five.
With two outs, Rice walked Brett Roneberg, who advanced on a wild pitch and scored on John Hattig's double.

But Portland would get no closer.

"I liked (Friday night's starter Daniel) Cabrera and this kid Morris tonight for Bowie," Johnson said.
"(Today's) guy, (John) Maine, is supposed to be their best, so it should be interesting.
"Maybe that's our key, his last name. We'll win off him and get us over the hump."

MORRIS AND WHITESIDE LEAD BAYSOX TO 5-1WIN
OVER PORTLAND BEFORE 10,471 SPECTATORS

The second biggest April crowd in Prince George’s Stadium history had nothing to complain about on Saturday night.
Beautiful weather, spectacular post-game fireworks and a dominating Baysox performance resulted in a perfect night for the 10,471 in attendance, as Bowie defeated the Portland Sea Dogs, 5-1, for their third straight victory.

Cory Morris tossed five no-hit innings and Eli Whiteside had a homer and three RBI in his second game since being activated from the DL, to lead the Baysox to the win.

Morris (1-1) walked five and struck out seven in five innings of work and was lifted due to an early-season pitch count.

Reliever Scott Rice allowed a two-out double in the sixth for the first Portland hit of the night.

The Baysox (8-7) got things started in the second, courtesy of an Eli Whiteside two-run homer to right center against Portland starter Jerome Gamble.

Gamble (0-1) suffered the loss, allowing five hits and four earned runs in 4.2 innings.

Bowie added three more runs in the fifth to take a 5-0 lead.
Jose Morban led off with a single, stole second, advanced to third on a fly out and scored on a Tony Mota single.
Kris Wilken drove in Mota with an RBI-single to right and then scored on a Whiteside RBI-double.

Portland (4-10) notched their only run of the night on John Hattig’s double in the sixth.

The Sea Dogs managed only three hits on the night.

Andy Mitchell worked the final two innings for Bowie, allowing only two singles.

Whiteside, Wilken and Octavio Martinez each had two hits to lead the 10-hit Baysox attack.

The Baysox and Sea Dogs close out their three-game series on Sunday.
RHP John Maine (2-0, 2.87)) starts for the Baysox…RHP Ryan Cameron (0-0, 7.71) will go for Portland.
Game time is 1:05 p.m.
