Game Reports
Sea Dogs take opener from Thunder
Reflecting the battle between their parent clubs at Fenway Park,
the Portland Sea Dogs and Trenton Thunder hammered it out Monday
at Hadlock Field.
Kenny Perez hit a bases-loaded single in the bottom of the ninth,
giving the Sea Dogs an 8-7 win over Trenton before a crowd of
4,933.
Portland, the Double-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, will savor
any win over Trenton, the New York Yankees' affiliate.
"I don't care if we're playing a Little League team, I want
to win," Portland Manager Ron Johnson said.
"But, come on, we know they're the Yankees and they know
we're the Red Sox.
"We were watching the (Boston-New York) game (on Hadlock
Field's new video board) during batting practice. It was great."
The Sea Dogs-Thunder game featured two ties, three lead changes,
22 hits and several Sea Dogs wearing the hero's hat.
Start with Perez, who walked to force home the winning run in
last Thursday's home opener.
He came up Monday with one out and the Trenton infield and outfield
pulled in.
He hit a fly deep enough to left-center field.
"I knew they were going to play in on me and anything in
the outfield would score (a run)," Perez said.
"I just took advantage of it."
Jeff Bailey (3 for 5), who had an RBI double, then singled in
the tying run in the seventh and singled to load the bases in
the ninth.
"About time, huh?" said Bailey, who came in hitting
.103.
Starter Ryan Cameron came out rusty after six days' rest.
The Thunder took a single, a two-run homer by Andy Phillips, another
single and a walk before turning to his breaking ball and change-up
to strike out the side in the first.
He settled down to finish six innings.
"That was tremendous," Johnson said.
"We can use that as a teaching tool for some of these younger
guys. He came out and obviously didn't have a feel for what he
was doing - faces two hitters and is down (2-0), and there is
trouble brewing. Next thing you know, he's in the sixth."
Eric Johnson got Cameron off the hook with his three-run homer
over the message board in the second.
Johnson got a full-count, hanging slider and pounded it.
He also made a sensational catch in center, charging in and sliding
on his belly.
Mike Campo continued to get clutch hits, getting a two-run triple
to right-center in Portland's five-run second inning.
He also singled and scored the tying run in the seventh.
Closer Juan Perez (1-0) entered in the seventh after reliever
Ryan Larson allowed four hits and three runs as Trenton regained
the lead.
After an intentional walk, Perez retired the final seven batters,
four by strikeout.
Infielder Joe Kilburg, who has played in independent leagues the
past three years, is finding a home at Hadlock.
He went 2 for 3 with two walks and two runs. He tripled with two
outs in the fifth and scored.
Brett Roneberg scored
two runs, including the winner in the ninth.
He drew a walk from Trenton's fifth pitcher, Jeff Kennard.
Kilburg worked a 3-0 count, including a wild pitch to advance
Roneberg, then reached on an intentional ball four.
Bailey singled to left and Roneberg held at third, setting up
Perez's winning hit in Game 1 of a three-game series.
SEA DOGS SCORE ANOTHER COMEBACK WIN
Bases-Loaded Single by Perez in 9th Keys 8-7 Victory over Trenton
Kenny Perez hit a bases loaded single in the bottom of the ninth
inning, lifting the Sea Dogs to an 8-7 win over the Trenton Thunder
in a Patriots Day afternoon affair before 4,933 fans at Hadlock
Field.
In the final frame, reliever Jeff Kennard (0-1) walked two batters
and gave up a single to Jeff Bailey, setting up the winning hit
by Perez.
It was the second game-winning RBI of the homestand for Perez,
who won Thursday's game against Binghamton with a bases-loaded
walk in the 11th inning.
Bailey tied the game in the seventh inning with a two-out RBI
single.
He also doubled home a run in the fifth frame.
After Trenton's Andy Phillips hit a two-run homer off Sea Dog
starter Ryan Cameron in the first inning, Portland scored five
times in the second.
Eric Johnson became the eighth Sea Dog in franchise history to
homer over the Legg Mason Message Center in left-center field
with a three-run shot.
Two singles and a Mike Campo two-run triple followed to knock
starter Rik Currier from the game.
Jason Grove hit a two-run home run in the fourth inning to make
it 5-4 and Bailey's RBI double in the fifth frame gave Portland
a two-run advantage.
Trenton took the lead back in the seventh frame with three runs
off new Sea Dog reliever Ryan Larson, setting the stage for the
Portland comeback.
Juan Perez (1-0) tossed 2 1/3 hitless innings of relief, fanning
four for his first win of the year.
