PORTLAND FALLS TO BINGHAMTON, 6-3, ON FRIDAY
3-Run 7th Inning Dooms Portland

Wayne Lydon and Ron Acuna delivered run-scoring hits in a three-run seventh inning, as Binghamton topped the Sea Dogs, 6-3 on Friday.
The Mets scored three runs off reliever Jeremy Lambert (0-1) in the seventh on three extra-base hits and a throwing error.

Portland committed four errors in the loss, its fifth in the first seven games of the season.

Brett Roneberg drove in all three Sea Dogs runs with a two-run first inning double and an RBI single in the third frame -- which was Portland's final hit of the game.

Binghamton relievers Tim Lavigne (1-1) and Kyle Strayhorn retired the final 12 Sea Dogs in order to earn the win.

Defensive miscues cost Sea Dogs

If you're not hitting, you better play defense.
The Portland Sea Dogs didn't do either in Friday's 6-3 loss to the Binghamton Mets at Hadlock Field.

Portland committed four errors and three Mets pitchers combined on a three-hitter.

"When you get into a situation where you're trying to manufacture some runs against a team that does it pretty good, you're going to have to catch the ball, and unfortunately tonight we didn't do that; we allowed them too many outs an inning," Portland Manager Ron Johnson said.

Binghamton (7-2) and Portland (2-5) will play the third game of a four-game series at 1 p.m. today.

One positive note for Portland was the improved performance of Sea Dogs starter Abe Alvarez in his home debut.
Rated the No. 7 prospect in the Red Sox organization by Baseball America, the 6-foot-2 lefty got a rude welcome in his sudden rise to Double-A, giving up five runs in four innings in his first start at Altoona on April 9.
Alvarez was much sharper in his home debut, consistently getting ahead in the count and throwing 48 of his 81 pitches for strikes, with four strikeouts and two walks before being pulled after four innings.
"I just went out there and trusted my stuff more and attacked the strike zone better," said Alvarez, who was Boston's second-round pick (49th overall) in 2003.

Brett Roneberg's wind-aided two-run double in the first staked Alvarez to a quick 2-0 lead.
The fly turned Mets left fielder Ron Acuna around in a circle before it dropped beyond his reach.

Binghamton got three in the top of the second - with similar help from defensive miscues.
Prentice Redman led off with a wall-ball double.
But Alvarez easily could have gotten out of the inning unscathed.
His throw on a one-out comebacker that bounced off his shin was dropped by first baseman Mike O'Keefe, his fifth error in seven games.
With two outs and runners at the corners, Chris Basak's lazy fly to left-center froze Sea Dogs left fielder Jeff Bailey in his tracks, dropping for an RBI single.
David Bacani, the No. 9 batter, then pulled a 1-2 fastball that caught too much of the plate for a two-run single.

Roneberg, who played 49 games with the Sea Dogs when they were a Florida Marlins affiliate in 2001, tied the game with another two-out hit in the third, pulling a single to right to score John Hattig from second.

But Portland was hitless over the final six innings.

Portland reliever Jeremy Lambert took the loss.
Binghamton roughed him up in the seventh for three extra-base hits to score two runs, and a third run scored on a throwing error by catcher Edgar Martinez, his third error of the game.

Martinez was one of four Portland hitters who started the night batting less than .150.
Hattig had a double after going 3 for 22 to start the year, but the other silent Sea Dogs didn't show signs of waking, as Bailey, O'Keefe and Martinez were a combined 0 for 9 without hitting a ball out of the infield.

Binghamton starter Jason Scobie went five innings, giving up three runs on three hits.

Relievers Tim Lavigne and Kole Strayhorn combined for four perfect innings.

"One sure fire way to fail is to press," Johnson said of the offensive slump.
"We've played what? Seven games? We don't want to make a mountain out of a molehill, and right now they're just molehills."

Wright, who had 12 hits during the Mets' seven-game homestand, went hitless for the second consecutive game.
He still leads Binghamton regulars with a .375 this season.
