Heard during the game
(1) After giving out the team line-ups, the commentator said that "Brett has played leftfield, designated hitter, and now first base in the first three games of the season"

(2) During the bottom of the first inning, a ball was driven towards first base - the commentator said that "Brett took a step to his right but the ball went under his glove and though it wasn't ruled an error, that is one that Brett would like to have back as he would feel he should have got it"

(3) During the bottom of the third inning, a Curve batter hit a "bouncer" in the infield - it was heading towards first base and "Roneberg made a fine play as the ball must have hit a pebble on the infield and Brett had to leave his feet to bring down that ball that was seven or eight feet in the air"

Pitching falters again, Dogs slip to 0-3

The Portland Sea Dogs tied the worst start in franchise history with Saturday night's 8-5 loss to the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark.
Portland dropped to 0-3 for the second time, matching the same slow start as the 2000 club.
That team snapped the skid with an 11-game winning streak, showing a quick turnaround is possible.

This year's team will have to get more consistent pitching from the rotation and the bullpen to put together any type of winning streak.

"Oh no, it's nothing to panic over right now," said Chris Smith, Saturday's starting pitcher.
"We have a good corps of talented pitchers on this team, and we just need to get rolling right now."

The Sea Dogs squandered leads of 1-0, 2-1 and 4-2 in the first four innings.

Altoona's scrappy offense, which produced 10 runs Friday night, smacked 14 hits in coming back for the victory.

Portland started pitching prospects in all three games, but Charlie Zink, Abe Alvarez and Smith all have been hurt by mistakes.

"We've done a good job hitting mistakes, and balls that have been left up we seem to hit them pretty good," Curve Manager Tony Beasley said.
"Also, two-strike hitting has been pretty good. We've battled with two strikes."

Altoona took the lead for good with a pair of runs in the sixth inning off reliever Eric Glaser (0-1).
Ray Sadler singled and scored on Ronny Paulino's single to make it 5-4, and Chris Duffy's hit-and-run single scored Jeff Keppinger for a two-run cushion.

The Curve added two more runs in the eighth on an RBI double by Paulino and a sacrifice fly from Brandon Chaves.

The Sea Dogs brought the tying or go-ahead run to the plate in each of the final five innings.

Their last-gasp effort included three walks to load the bases with one out in the ninth.
Curve closer Elio Serrano induced a sacrifice fly from Mike O'Keefe, scoring Mike Campo, then earned the save by striking out Jeff Bailey.

Jesus Medrano doubled to start the game and scored on O'Keefe's sacrifice fly for a 1-0 Sea Dogs' lead.
Altoona answered in its first at-bat off Smith as Duffy led off with a double and came home on a double play.

Eric Johnson singled and came in on Sheldon Fulse's single in the second for Portland.
The Curve pulled even on Sadler's solo homer in the bottom of the inning.

Johnson stretched the lead to 4-2 with a two-run homer in the fourth.
Altoona rallied once again, tying it in the bottom of the fourth on two doubles and a single.

Brady Borner (1-0) got the win in relief.

Smith allowed four runs on seven hits over four innings in his Double-A debut.
"I missed a couple spots in a couple key situations," Smith said.
"I threw the ball to the spot but just not well enough to get the guy out. When you don't do that, it's just going to lead to base hits, and that's what happened."

SEA DOGS EQUAL WORST START IN FRANCHISE HISTORY
Sea Dogs Lose Three Leads in 8-5 Loss at Altoona; Dogs Now 0-3

Ronny Paulino went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBI -- including the game-tying and go-ahead base hits -- as Altoona topped Portland, 8-5 on Saturday night.

The Sea Dogs fell to 0-3, equaling the worst start in franchise history.

Portland let three separate leads slip away in the first four innings as Chris Smith, in his Double-A debut, allowed seven hits and four runs in four innings.

The Sea Dogs scored once in the first and second frames and twice in the fourth, only to see Altoona match those outputs in each inning.

Portland then stranded seven runners -- including five in scoring position -- over the final five innings.

Jesus Medrano went 3-for-4 with a double, walk, stolen base and run scored for Portland.

Eric Johnson added his first Double-A home run and a single and two RBI to begin the season 6-for-11.
