Game Notes

Friday 1st August 2003 - Game #110

--
Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

Akron Aeros - road game at Canal Park
Playing first base - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats
------1) RHP - bases empty/one down - called/ball, followed by a ground ball to first base - out "3-to-1"
------2) RHP - bases empty/two down - called, and then a pop up at the plate - out "F2"
------3) RHP - led off the innings - called/ball/foul/ball, and then - a stand-up double!!! - see below in the "Heard during the Game" section - scored on another hit
------4) RHP - bases empty/one down - called/check swing strike/ball/ball/ball/called - strike out!!! - and see below in the "Heard during the Game" section
Heard during the game
(1) As Brett walked in for his first at bat, the commentator said that "Brett is currently in a 1-for-34 slump which is a 0.029 average"
(2) After Brett hit the double in his third at bat, here are the comments from the game commentator
----------"ringing double off the left-centrefield wall"
----------"Brett has hit a lot of balls hard during this slump, and he finally gets a result"
----------"that would have felt good"
----------"he smoked that ball into the gap"
(3)
EJECTED FROM THE GAME!!! - following his strike out in his fourth at bat, Brett argued with the umpire over the call while standing at the plate, and also came out of the dugout to "bark something" at the home plate umpire - and was ejected - the commentator said that after an appeal was made on his check swing and it was called a strike, Brett stood there not believing the call and then said "I must admit I agree with him because he held up in plenty of time" - he continued his at bat taking three pitches out of the zone before being "rung up on a borderline pitch" - then came the arguement, with the Curve Manager Dale Sveum also joining in "the discussion" at home plate
Fielding
(1) During the bottom of the first innings, the Aeros had a runner at first base - in the commentators words, the pitcher made "an errant pick off throw and the ball got past Roneberg" - the runner took off for second and turned the corner to head for third base - but "a great play and throw to third by Roneberg stopped the runner from taking the extra bag" - the play was ruled an error by the Curve pitcher
(2) In the bottom of the fifth innings, Brett was the final fielder in an infield double play - the throw from second base was off line, and it was a close call at first base, "but Roneberg was able to make a good play, reaching for the ball and keeping his foot on the base long enough to record the out"
Error!!!

In the bottom of the sixth innings, and with two down and a runner at second base, the next Aeros batter hit a ball towards first base - in the commentators words, the ball took a "bad hop" and got past Brett and into rightfield - it was ruled "a tough error on Roneberg but that's how the scorers see it" - the baserunner scored (making the score 4 runs to 2 with the Curve leading) but the next batter popped out to end the innings
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "...back-to-back doubles in the sixth by Brett Roneberg and Josh Bonifay restored the Curve's three-run lead"
(2) "And with Fernando Cabrera having quieted the Curve hitters in hitless relief of Evans for two innings, momentum began to change.
Frustrated by a strikeout, Curve first baseman Brett Roneberg was ejected for arguing by home plate umpire Andy Vincent"
(3) "In the sixth, Grady Sizemore, the Aeros' hottest hitter, singled on his third hit, then scored on an error to cut the deficit to 4-2"

Email from Geoff during the game
10.20am Saturday morning here.
Sharon and I listening to your Friday game.
Your third at bat.
AND I BET THAT FELT FUCKING GOOOOOOOOOOOOOD!!!
The commentator said "lots of things", which will be in my game report later.
Bye, bye.
Email from Brett
And yes, it did feel pretty damn good!
Should've been 1 for 3 with a double and a "walk".
But no!!!
Email from Sharon
Hey "Scott"!
Fancy getting tossed - heard it all loud and clear!!
Are you in trouble?
Heard the double - that sounded good.
Bye now!
......and a note from Brett to Sharon
No Mother, I am not in trouble.
I am a big boy and can do what I want!!
......and another from Brett
Well, just let me say that it was totally the umpires fault I was ejected!
I hate them all!!!

Saturday 2nd August 2003 - Game #111
Did not listen

Akron Aeros - road game at Canal Park
Did not play

Email from Brett before the game
Lefty pitching today,
so I am not sure if I am going to play.
Hope so.
Bye.
......and a note after the game
Didn't play today as you know.
I am 99% sure I will play tomorrow and get some hits,
so hopefully you have a good one to listen to.
Going to sleep now so I can get ready for the game.
See ya

Sunday 3rd August 2003 - Game #112

--
Listening to the game - live on internet radio!!!

Akron Aeros - road game at Canal Park
Playing first base - batting at #6
Had 3 plate appearances - 3 at bats
------1) RHP - bases empty/one down - foul/foul/ball/swing&miss at "a nasty breaking pitch" - strike out!!!
------2) RHP - runner at second base/two down - ball/ball, and then "laced that ball down the rightfield line and into the corner" - a stand up double and 1 x RBI!!! - "a clutch two out hit for the Curve" - left stranded at the end of the innings
------3) RHP - runner at first base/none down - swung at the first pitch, and "drove that ball into rightfield, but as luck would have it, it was straight at the fielder who made the catch" - "another hard hit ball for no result" - out "F9"
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites
(1) "Chan Perry and Brett Roneberg both drove in a run for Altoona, which dropped to 10 games over 0.500 for the first time since June 27"
(2) "The Curve enjoyed its only success on the afternoon against the Aeros Francisco Cruceta in the top of the fourth when Chan Perry and Brett Roneberg produced an RBI single and double, respectively, to even the score at 2-2"
(3) "Chan Perry's RBI single and Brett Roneberg's RBI double tied the score 2-2 in the fourth"

Email from Geoff during the game
Hi,
and I heard that!!!
Waited through the rain delay at 4.00am Monday morning!!!
Only 30 minutes, which wasn't too bad.
Then your second at bat - runner at second base with two down.
And this is what the commentator said:-
(1) "laced that ball down the rightfield line and into the corner"
(2) "a clutch two out hit for the Curve"
A stand up double, and drove in the tying run!!!
Sounded good on the radio!!!
The fifth innings has just finished.
And the Aeros are leading 4 runs to 2.
C'mon Curve!!!
Bye, bye.
Email from Brett
Is that all you heard??
Did you hear the strikeout??
What about the line out???
Was a pretty good day.
Wish I had gotten more than three at bats.
See ya
......and a reply to Brett
Sure I did!!!
Heard all three at bats!!!
And Sharon was up in time to hear the last one!!!
All the details are here - CLICK HERE (link to this page)
If you don't want to look, here are a few notes from that page.
AT BAT #1 - foul/foul/ball/swing&miss at "a nasty breaking pitch" - strike out!!!
AT BAT #2 - THE HIT!!!
AT BAT #3 - swung at the first pitch, and the game commentator said "he drove that ball into rightfield, but as luck would have it, it was straight at the fielder who made the catch" - and he also said it was "another hard hit ball for no result" - out "F9"
As I said, Sharon and I were both able to listen to your third at bat, and she was still home when the top of the ninth inning came around.
And you were the fourth batter up!!!
We were hoping one of the three guys before you would get a hit, walk, HPB, anything!!! so you would get another at bat!!!
You'll have to "swing the stick real good" and get back up to number 3, 4 or 5 in the order so you get more at bats per game!!!
See you.
......and a note from Brett
Glad to hear that you both got to listen.
But in the 9th I knew I wasn't going to hit.
Sometimes you can just feel it - and that was a time I did.

From the Curve web site - "News and Notes" - after Sunday's game
"SS Shaun Skrehot (2-for-31), C Chris Heintz (2-for-28), OF/1B Brett Roneberg (3-for-41), and C/1B Chris Shelton (1-for-22) are all enduring prolonged slumps.
However, Skrehot (2-for-last-8), Roneberg (2-for-5), and Shelton (1-for-2) are all showing signs of pulling out of their funks"

Monday 4th August 2003 - no games scheduled

Before the series against the Harrisburg Senators
Email from Geoff to Brett

Have a great series in Harrisburg against your old team!!!
Email from Sharon
Good luck in Harrisburg - don't let Bailey pick you off - see I remember stuff!!
Love
Mum xxxooo
......and a note from Brett
I will try to swing it well against my old team.
I will have to wait and see how I go.

This note was published before the start of the following six game series against the Harrisburg Senators
"Top Altoona hitters v Harrisburg"
"1B Chan Perry is batting .356 against the Senators with two homers and eight runs batted in,
followed by OF-1B Brett Roneberg (.349-0-8) - OF Chris Duffy (.327-0-4) - OF Shawn Garrett (.327-0-3)
OF Kevin Nicholson (.327-1-7) and C Chris Heintz (.290-1-5)"

Tuesday 5th August 2003 - Game #113
Listening to the game - live on internet radio - but only heard part of it

Harrisburg Senators - road game at Riverside Stadium
Did not start the game
but came in to replace Josh Bonifay who was ejected - went to leftfield
------1) ?HP - (did not hear) - strike out!!!
------2) ?HP - (did not hear) - walk, and scored on an error by the Senators second-baseman
------3) ?HP - runner at first base/one down - ball, and "fisted the next pitch into shallow centrefield" - out "F8"

Email from Geoff to Sharon and Tanya
The Senators have a lefty pitching, and Brett is on the bench.
This game, plus the next five, do not have a "DH" so if he is not in the starting lineup, he has a chance to get a pinch hit if the right situation comes up.
From what I can work out, there is a righty going tomorrow and the next day for the Senators.

Wednesday 6th August 2003 - Game #114
Listening to the game - live on internet radio, but a few "connection drop outs"!!!

Harrisburg Senators - road game at Riverside Stadium
Playing rightfield - batting at #5
Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats
------1) RHP - runner at first base/none down - hit the ball towards the Senators first-baseman who made the play at second base - Brett safe at first on a 'fielders choice' - and then was forced out at second base on another 'fielders choice' hit by the next Curve batter
------2) RHP - bases empty/two down - out
------3) RHP - bases empty/none down - singled - the next Curve batter hit a ground ball to third base and Brett was going on the pitch - the play was at first base, and Brett rounded second and continued to third and beat the relay throw - unfortunately I did not hear this base-running, but it is mentioned in the "Newspaper Report" section below - a ground ball was then hit to the Senators first-baseman who tried to make the out at the plate - but "Roneberg was streaking home and slid in safely to beat the tag"
------4) LHP - led off the innings - first pitch hitting, and "looped into leftfield for a base hit and Roneberg has his second straight hit" - single - out at second base on a 'fielders choice' hit by the next Curve batter
Fielding
With two down in the bottom of the ninth innings, the next Senators batter drove a ball in to right-centrefield - in the commentators words, "Brett got across and made a great reaching catch for the final out of the ballgame"
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites

(1) "In the sixth, Brett Roneberg singled, advanced to third base on a ground ball thanks to some aggressive base-running, and scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Duffy"
(2) "Brett Roneberg and Shaun Skrehot each had two of Altoona's nine hits"

Email from Geoff to Brett
This is pretty good stuff!!!
"In the sixth, Brett Roneberg singled, advanced to third base on a ground ball thanks to some aggressive base-running,
and scored on a fielder's choice grounder off the bat of Duffy"

Thursday 7th August 2003 - Game #115

--
Listening to the game - live on internet radio, but the line dropped out for Brett's final at bat!!!

Harrisburg Senators - road game at Riverside Stadium
Playing rightfield - batting at #4
Had 4 plate appearances - 4 at bats
------1) RHP - led off the innings - called/foul/foul/foul/ball/ball, and then a ground ball towards first base - out "3-to-1"
------2) RHP - runner at first base/one down - called/foul, followed by a pop up into shallow rightfield - out "F9"
------3) RHP - runners at first and second base/one down - ball/ball/called/foul/foul, and a ground ball to shortstop which resulted in a "6-to-4-to-3" inning ending double play
------4) LHP - (did not hear!!!) - runner at second base - drove the pitch to left-centrefield!!! - a double and 1 x RBI which was the go-ahead run!!! - caught stealing, but I don't know any of the details (ISP connection dropped out)
Heard during the Game
As Brett came in for his first at bat, there was a fair amount of cheering and applause - the commentator said that "Brett is still a very popular player here in Harrisburg having played here last season - and the same applies this year at Altoona where he is the fan favourite - he is just that type of person!!!"
......and excerpts from the Newspapers and Team web sites

(1) "Brett Roneberg's RBI double capped a four-run eighth inning as the Altoona Curve rallied for a 7-4 victory over the Harrisburg Senators Thursday Night at RiverSide Stadium in Harrisburg.
Trailing 4-1 entering the top of the eighth, the Curve began its rally innocently on a throwing error by Senators' third baseman Victor Gutierrez on a ball hit by Chris Heintz.
Two batters later, Kevin Nicholson doubled home the first of the four runs in the frame with a gapper to left-center, scoring Heintz and moving Chan Perry to third.
After Chuck Crumpton recorded the first out of the inning, Jose Castillo dribbled a two-run single to centerfield, tying the game at 4-4.
Tough left-hander Chad Bentz came into the game, but was greeted by the left-handed hitting Roneberg, who delivered the eventual game winning hit - a double to left-centrefield - giving the Curve a 5-4 lead that it would not relinquish"
(2) "After Kevin Nicholson doubled in a run to bring Altoona within two runs at 4-2, Castillo knocked in a pair with his second hit of the game to tie it.
Brett Roneberg followed with an RBI double to cap the rally for the Curve"
(3) "Jose Castillo's two-run single and Brett Roneberg's RBI double capped a four run rally in the eighth inning that lifted the Altoona Curve over the Harrisburg Senators 7-4 Thursday in the Eastern League.
Castillo then singled to center, scoring Perry and Nicholson to tie the score.
Roneberg followed with a double off reliever Chad Bentz, scoring Castillo for a 5-4 lead"
(4) "Formers Senator’s outfielder Brett Roneberg lined a run scoring double to drive in Jose Castillo with the winning run in the eighth inning.
Harrisburg entered the eighth with a 4-1 lead"
(5) "Trailing 4-1 entering the eighth inning, Altoona rallied for four runs to take the lead.
An RBI double by 3B Kevin Nicholson, a two-run single by 2B Jose Castillo,
and a tie-breaking RBI two-bagger by RF Brett Roneberg accounted for the runs"

Brett was interviewed following the game,
and his comments were included in the game report published in this paper

"The way we were going, we needed to get at least two out of the series here," Altoona right fielder Brett Roneberg said.
"To get a sweep was great for us"
Roneberg was, in great part, responsible for that as the Curve rallied for four runs in the eighth inning off relievers Chuck Crumpton and Chad Bentz for a 5-4 lead.

The decisive rally in the eighth began with Chris Heintz reaching on a throwing error by third baseman Victor Gutierrez to start the inning and Chan Perry following with a single to center.
Kevin Nicholson then doubled to left-center off Crumpton, scoring Heintz and cutting Harrisburg's lead to 4-2.
Two batters later, Jose Castillo lined a single to center, scoring Perry and Nicholson and tying the score at 4.
Bentz replaced Crumpton to set up a lefty-lefty match against Roneberg, who a year ago was helping the Senators to the EL finals.
Roneberg jumped ahead in the count 2-1 before lining Bentz's next pitch to left-center, easily scoring Castillo for a 5-4 lead.
"We got a leadoff error that gave us one little edge," Roneberg said, "and we took it from there"

Email from Geoff to Brett
From the newspaper reports:-
"Tough left-hander Chad Bentz came into the game, but was greeted by the left-handed hitting Roneberg, who delivered the eventual game winning hit - an RBI double to left-centrefield - giving the Curve a 5-4 lead that it would not relinquish"
Lefty v Lefty!!!
And #17 won!!!
Way to go!!!
My full report will be in What's New later.
Have a good sleep, and wish you the best during the home-stand.
See you.
Dad.
......and a note from Brett
Thanks.
Did feel pretty good to get that hit,
and hopefully I will be back in there tomorrow against the lefty Lockwood.
We will have to wait and see.
See ya.
Another email from Geoff
Hi,
and this is from my game report for Thursday's game -- "a very popular player and a fan favourite"
It was very nice to hear Rob Egan say it,
AND
you'll probably get a note from Sharon!!!
......and a note from Sharon
Hi Brett.
You keep telling me you are "a likable fellow" - it must be true!!
Don't get a big head though will you - be nice to children and old people!
It is nice to hear nice stuff about my baby!!
No - one loves you like I do!
Mum.
PS - I am now home on holidays for 4 weeks - give me some good stuff to listen to, eh!

Email from Ed Leipold - a Curve fan who was listening in Altoona
Hi Geoff.
Listened to the road games - (great comeback last night) - but I get too apprehensive waiting for Rob Egan's call!!
Love it when they think a southpaw will handle Brett at the plate.
He's been ripping lefties all year.
Will see him Sunday on the last autograph/picture day of the year.
18 regular home games left, starting tonight, then the playoffs.
Fans, especially the "Physcos," are really gearing up for the stretch run.
Later, Geoff
GO CURVE!!!!

From the Curve web site - "News and Notes" - after Thursday's game
"1B/OF Brett Roneberg has gone 5-for-15 with three doubles, 2 RBI, 3 R in his last six games"

The video shows Brett's at-bat plus being forced out at second base

Also, the commentators talk about Brett's "strong arm at rightfield"

It's Day One of her 28 days of holidays!!!

Email from Brett
Well, last night 'sucked' as you know.
I for one hate hitting in the #2 hole.
I am really frustrated like you are at how things are progressing.
I am working hard everyday to get things right and it's just not working.
I am frustrated to hell and back,
but I will keep working and try to finish strong.
Fingers crossed.
I am not writing this to anyone one else.
Don't let Mum worry.
See ya.
