"Be it known that on Thursday 21st April 2011,
I, Sharon Roneberg, great-grand-daughter of Joseph William Coudrey
did sit on my front patio on a beautiful balmy evening
and read the Diary of Joseph William Coudrey"

I was very excited when I came to the entry for the 21st April 1879 and read what he had been doing 132 years ago ... to the day
How amazing !!

We are fortunate to have this document as part of Our Family History and I am so thankful to my husband Geoff for being so tenacious and not giving up on locating the Diary when we thought it was gone for ever

Below are some parts I really enjoyed

Pages 01 to 05 - Monday 24th March 1879 to Saturday 29th March 1879

The excitement of starting their journey and leaving England
They were feeling the cold terribly
And then their bedding was missing ... and found after five hundred enquiries !!
Then the sea sickness started ... I was laughing out loud while I was reading this !!
It was so funny how he described it and then to top it off his "faithful picture" of a sea sick matron with her "unmentionable articles bobbing about"

Page 10 - Monday 7th April 1879

His discussion with a "touchy Scot"on the equality of the Human Race was interesting

Page 10 - Tuesday 8th April 1879

As the weather became warmer they had to shed their clothes ... seems they were not used to that !!

Page 18 - Friday 2nd May 1879

Some "poor fellow" died and the sailors had to get dressed up for his funeral because he was a "75 guinea passenger and had a nurse"

Page 19 - Friday 9th May 1879

The excitement of arriving is intense !!

Page 20 - Saturday 10th May 1879

They have arrived and to see the words Semaphore, Port Adelaide and Adelaide is quite exciting !!
I wonder what they would think if they could see it all now

"A few of our Notables"

I really enjoyed this section too !!

I loved reading the Diary
Joseph had a way with words and his hand writing is beautiful
The journey had everything
birth and death, a little intrigue and lots of interesting characters
!!--this has been a real treat--!!

NOTE

Joseph mentioned "Sankeys" a few times in relation to the concerts and singing
I had heard the word before so I looked it up and below are a few details
