City awash
Hundreds of homes have been inundated, dozens
of cars are stranded and businesses face a massive clean-up bill
as the Far North continues to be pounded by heavy rain
In the last twenty-four hours, Low Isles north of Cairns has
had 394mm and 301mm has been recorded at Cairns Airport - most
of that in just three to four hours
Other areas to receive heavy rainfall included Port Douglas 350
and Miallo 369mm
Hills Creek, Brinsmead and Kamerunga all recorded more than 250mm,
while 163mm of rain fell over Copperlode Dam
It comes after Cyclone Charlotte crossed the coast south of the
Gilbert River mouth at 4.00am this morning bringing 120km winds
and widespread drenching rain

Rain from the cyclone combined with a king tide at 10.00am caused
serious flooding in Cairns
Water levels are expected to reach 3.8m in some low-lying areas,
the Bruce Hwy has been shut in several places and city streets
have been turned into rivers
Many workers have been stranded at home and some people reported
taking more than an hour to drive 5km to work as police and emergency
services diverted motorists past the worst-hit areas
An Emergency Management Queensland spokeswoman said about 100
homes had been inundated by rain and tides, despite sandbagging
on Sunday night
In Manunda and Manoora, residents reported knee-deep water
under houses and in Edmonton, wheelie bins floated down the
streets as water inundated the area
Yorkeys Knob resident Simone Roseler said residents were bracing
for what would happen with the king tide, and more rain expected
later today and into the night
"This morning our street was like one big, flowing river
and we were scared our car was going to float away" Ms Roseler
said "And the cane fields look like lakes"
She said her suburb, about 15km north of Cairns CBD, was
cut off by water
Other northern beaches suburbs have also been cut off while Port
Douglas is also reported to have been hit by flash flooding
On the Cairns Esplanade, the high tide has washed away up to
1m of foreshore, several Casuarina trees and turf
The popular Esplanade lagoon has so far suffered no damage
In parts of the CBD and near the Cairns showgrounds, business
owners face massive clean-ups after water inundated their shops
and businesses
Some reported water up to 70cm deep washing through buildings
Copperlode Falls dam is just 0.5m from its spillway and is expected
to go over some time today
