SECTION #20 ... Magic with Tomatoes !!

These photos were taken on Wednesday 16th July 2008
Sharon planted these two tomato varieties on the 22nd June

(
click here and scroll down the page for the details)
They have taken off !!

Firstly, here are the "Tumbling Red Toms"
From this ...

... to this ...

Secondly, here are the "Grape Toms" and these have also shot ahead ...

... and Sharon had to buy a special support for this plant ...
... and click on the photo opposite
for a much larger shot

SECTION #21 ... Persistant Prolific Plants !!

These photos were taken on Monday 8th September 2008
Sharon planted the tomatoes and capsicums in the cart way back in March !!
The plants do not look as 'lush' as the once did, but they are still shooting, flowering and fruiting
and each day Sharon can pick more than she can use !!
You can see tomatoes and capsicums everywhere in these two shots

... and here are a few more updates

Beans These were planted during June (click here) and took off really well (click here)
Sharon picked a few good handfuls, but then they just went dormant ... leaves went brown and the plants looked like they were giving up !!
She still has the packet of seeds and will give them another try ... another day

'Heart' Lettuce These were planted during July (click here) and like the beans, they took off ... but did not form a 'heart' !!
Sharon used the leaves in her salads, but all the plants have now been uprooted ... except for one, which looks like it might do as it should !! ... and that one 'didn't work' either !!

'Leaf' Lettuce Lots of varieties of these have been planted ... and they have been very successful
Sharon says it is months since she has had to buy any of these !!

Radish Again these have been great and there are always a few ready to be eaten ... by Geoff !!

After seven months, look at these tomatoes and capsicums ...

... and here as well, and these were planted back in June ...

... and a much larger photo !!

Update on the Button Squash

Look at the flowers !!

Update on the Button Squash

Terrible news Sunday 12th October 2008

Over the past two weeks, these plants continued to flower just like
the ones shown above ... there must have been at least twenty or
thirty of them ... BUT ... every one of the flowers shrivelled up,
turned brown and dropped off ... Sharon checked on the internet to
find out what may have been causing this and tried reducing how
much water she was giving them ... all to no avail ... both the
flowers and leaves continued to die ... so today, with tears in her
eyes and sadness in her heart, she had to pull all the plants out
and get the containers ready for something else

SECTION #23 ... Bad News !! - then - Good News !!

These photos were taken on Tuesday 13th January 2009

The Bad News - an email sent to Jackie's Wholesale Nurseries on Monday 22nd December 2008

Good morning
Your Company name and logo was on the above label
Using Google Search, I found your web site HERE
I rang the phone number shown to confirm the email address that was listed on this page
The lady I spoke to suggested I write to you
And now to our request !!
Eggplant Mini Lebanese
My Darling Wife Sharon is having "just a little bit of trouble" with this plant !!
I thought I would write to you on her behalf and ask for some help and advice
We purchased it and planted it in a large pot on Saturday 6th December 2008
When it was bought, it had a few flowers on it ... but these dropped off after a day or two
Sharon just presumed that it was due to the transplanting and did not worry about it
It is growing very, very well
It is in full sun, and following the instructions from the nursery where we bought it, it is very lightly fertilised with fish emulsion once per week
It is watered when the potting soil she used begins to look a little bit dry
Growing !! ... New Stems and Leaves !! ... Looks Healthy !!
And it is flowering all the time, as the photo below shows
But after reaching this stage, these flowers are also dropping off
No Flowers = No Fruit ... and that is a bit frustrating !!
Are you able to offer some reason for this, or can you suggest what Sharon might be doing wrong, or what she should be doing that she isn't, etc
Thanks for your time, and look forward to hearing from you
Regards .... Geoff

Hi Geoff
Well, I had a bit of a chat to a couple of my staff that love gardening and they had a few ideas
It could be a bit too dry
I'm told the flowers will drop off if it's too dry, and possibly should be watered morning and night
Or have a saucer under the pot and top it up as the water is used
Also maybe a bit of cover on top of the mix ... a bit of mulch to stop the soil from drying out
By the sound of your fertilisering routine, this should be fine
Just make sure it is for vegies as it will need potassium (flower) and nitrogen (growth)
Hope some of this info will fix the problem and please let me know you go

Sharon tried everything suggested by the nursery
but the flowers kept dropping off ... lots of them
Exactly the same thing as with the Button Squash in Section #22 above

The Good News - last Sunday Sharon spotted these ... two Egg Plants are on the way !!
