Hotpoint Deluxe Toaster

Model Number - TMI - see photos below
From the 1960/70's - ??? - see towards the bottom of this page

A note from Geoff to Sharon on Thursday 8th June 2006

Another "Kitchenalia Collectable" for you
Looks to be in perfect condition, and will be a great display

You can use it too - if you want!!!

But you'll have to remember it is not automatic
There is no pop-up when the toast is done,
and if you leave it too long, well, ......!!!

I suppose it's handy that we have just installed the smoke detectors!!!

- The Ebay Auction

(this is a shot of the bottom/underneath the toaster)

Vintage Hotpoint Deluxe Toaster
Made in Australia by Malleys
Never used!!
Mint in original box!!
A classic chrome, old style, two-door toaster with flip-down sides
States on the box:-
"Crisp even toast - Quick easy action - Heat-proof feet and handles"
With detachable electric cord
The box also is in nice clean condition

A question I sent to the seller after the auction ended
Hi, and I hope you can help with my question
My Darling Wife likes old stuff - probably why she is still married to me!
She really likes the 'Kitchenalia Items' from the 1950's to 1970's
and I bought this as a surprise for her
This toaster looks like it is from sometime in that period - would that be right?
Can you give me any details on it's "history"?
I had a look around the internet, using the Google Search for "Hotpoint" and "Malleys"
I can't quite read the Model Number in the photos
However, I couldn't find any type of reference
Any info that you could pass on would be really appreciated
as the age and history of these types of items is always nice to know
Thanks, Geoff

......and the reply
Hi Geoff, and a bit of the history
I 'think' the toaster came to me from my parents
and I 'think' it is from the 1960's, as that is my era
For the last thirty-plus years it has been in a cupboard
It is taken out, along with other items,
a couple of times a year when I do a major clean and scrub
I do have a big home
- at the moment I have a tri-level but down the track I want single-level
So, thinking ahead,
this toaster along with a heap of others things that I have never used......
......well, they have to go!!
If I find out more I will let you know
I do have heaps of old magazines from the 50/60's,
and when I start sorting them I may find some old adverts
But that is also down the track a bit yet!!
By the way, I did test the toaster before sending it off
Regards, Jenny

The Box - Toaster Packing

......and an approximate date of manufacturer

The photo below is of the bottom of the box
The box was made by
Tasman UEB of Sydney
and here are a few details on that Company

Tasman UEB Holdings Limited
Previously was - Broons Consolidated Industries Limited - named changed on 5th March 1971
Were taken over by APM Investments Pty Limited on 10th October 1979

So it looks like the box was made between March 1971 and October 1979

Does the large number "73" mean 1973 - ???

Could the toaster have been made at around the same time - ???

These are probably unanswerable questions!!!

The one I really wanted!!!

A note from Geoff to Sharon on Thursday 8th June 2006

Below is the one I really wanted to get you - but it was just too expensive!!!

I put in a bid for $100.00 - and that was easily beaten

I kept an eye on the auction,
and each time someone bid, the eventual winner would just top it!!!
From what I can work out, he is from Canada - and he might be a collector,
or he could be associated with the Museum detailed below, etc
He wanted it badly and it seemed he was prepared to pay any price!!!

Anyway, I think ours is pretty good

I have looked at lots of toasters,
and none looked to be in the type of condition that our Hotpoint does

It might not be as old as this Speedie, but it will be a "good collectable" for the future!!!"

Vintage Speedie Toaster
On bakelite tray and with bakelite handles
In extremely good condition
The tray is attached, but is easily removable for cleaning purposes
Still makes fantastic toast!!
For safety, I suggest getting it checked by a qualified electrician
with it being second hand, and quite old

A question from one of the bidders
Is there any rust or dents on any part of the toaster including the elements?

......and the reply from the seller
I have inspected the toaster very carefully,
and there is some surface rust on the inside of the drop down plates
I am sure that this will come off with a good clean
There are no dents at all
The elements are terrific
In fact, I made some toast on it the other day
And it was amazing!! - perfect toast!!

Item location - Melbourne Australia
This auction ended on Wednesday 7th June 2006
The starting price was set at $20.00 and there were fourteen bids during the auction
The final selling price was $189.00

--Auctions for similar Toasters

......for a price comparison!!!

Auction #01

This toaster has a very similar shape - in fact, it looks exactly the same as ours
but has round door handles whereas ours has rectangular shaped handles
It also has the same serial/reference number
Also, the condition is definately nowhere near as 'perfect' as ours!!!

Vintage Hotpoint Toaster
Goes well
It has bakelite handles each side and a toast warmer/rack on the top
A few "age marks" but overall it is in very good condition
A note I sent to the seller
Hi ya, and I don't want to be nuisance, but have a couple of questions
The photo on the auction listing is a bit blurry and dark
Are you able to upload a clearer and larger shot??
or send it to my email address at gggrfnq@bigpond.net.au
Also, the toast rack looks to be off centre
Is it fixed to the main body of the toaster, or does it just sit on top??
Finally, have you any idea of the age?? and model number??
Lots of questions, but we are redecorating our kitchen in the 50/60's style
and want to get things right!!
Thanks, Geoff
......and the reply
Hello Geoff
I have put another photo in the auction listing - hope you find it better
The toast rack fits on the top and can slide along
It is made in Australia, and the serial number is 63420.G1
I am not sure of the year or age
The toaster is not perfect - it has some marks
It would be a good collector's item though

Auction #02

This toaster looks exactly the same!!!
......but there appear to be a couple of differences
Firstly, it doesn't have the "mottled" effect on the doors
and I can't see the impressed rectangle around the name Hotpoint
Once again, the condition is definately nowhere near as 'perfect' as ours!!!
