(2) "The Old Cottage teapot is from the 1930's with an $800.00 value" (3) "This teapot is currently valued at $650.00 so be prepared to be bidding a bit more as I have twenty-three people watching this item!!" |
Q: What is the main reason for your appraisal? (ie: value, history, insurance, etc.) |
A: I would like to confirm the age of the teapot, along with
manufacturing details and information I understand these teapots are still being made (is that true???) and want to confirm that it is from the 1930's I also wish to have a value placed on it - mainly for information but also probably for insurance purposes |
Step 4: Additional Information | My wife and I have just "filled the teapot up"!!! - with water!!! - and it's capacity is 600ml - from what we can find on the internet, this would be too small for a 6-cup (900ml???) and would most probably be a 4 1/2 cup - is that right??? - the Ebay seller may have got it wrong maybe!!! - Thank you |

History Of The Item: |
Chintz is a type of English china that was first made in England
in 1929 It was introduced to the china market by the Royal Winton pottery, under the direction of Mr. Grimwade The first pattern was called "Marqurite" and it was an instant success with the public and the Royal family The best known manufactuers were Royal Winton, Kent, Shelley and Crown Ducal The lovely floral transfer designs are cheerful, bright and reminescent of spring and summer The most popular patterns were Summertime, Julia, Sweet Pea and English Rose Currently popular are Wellbeck, DuBarry and Rosetime Chintz china is an enduringly popular antique Because it is so popular, it has been heavily reproduced Production of genuine Royal Winton Grimwade chintz ceased in the late 1960s The company was reopened under new owners in 1995 and designs and patterns reissued Ascot is the name of the shape (or mold) and Old Cottage is the pattern Unfortunately, several factors indicate your teapot is a reproduction These factors are discussed in the comments section |
Appraiser Tips: |
The teapot can be kept clean by washing in very mild dish washing
liquid and warm water Do not immerse in hot water or put into a dishwasher; the extreme temperatures and harsh dishwasher detergents can harm the finish and cause major damage |

Appraiser Comments: |
Below are factors indicating the teapot
is a reproduction Crazing One of the criteria for judging a piece of antique china or Chintz is condition While there are no chips or cracks in the teapot, there should be crazing Chintz was made from earthenware and the glaze invariably crazed over time Crazing looks like fine squiggly lines on the surface of the glaze (sort of like fine wrinkles might look) There should be crazing, especially on the bottom of the teapot The pictures do not show any crazing at all on the surface Soiling The bottom of the tea pot shows no soiling whatsoever There should be some light soling, if only caused by moving the teapot across the surface of a shelf over many years Colours The colors on the teapot are lively and fairly bright However, Antique Chintz colors, while lively, are richer and deeper For example, the blue on the mark is bright but not as deep as it could be White also tended to acquire an ivory tone The white on your teapot is far too light to indicate early manufacture Backstamps and Marks Royal Winton used several different marks When the factory was reopened in 1995, one of the original marks was retained with a few minor variations One of those variations was the incorporation of the reissue year, 1995, into the mark One of the pictures shows a number incised into the bottom of the teapot - it appears to be 1095 which would indicate a manufacture date of October 1995 Even though Chintz has been reissued, reproductions have good value The appraisal is for a Royal Winton "Old Cottage" chintz teapot reissue in excellent condition. |

|
Size and/or Capacity
No mention was made about the
capacity of the teapot and our note that it held approx 600ml
Is it a six-cup as listed on the Ebay auction or is it a three/four-and-a-half-cup
size???
Year of Manufacture
The appraiser mentions:- "One
of the pictures shows a number incised into the bottom of the
teapot - it appears to be 1095 which would indicate a manufacture
date of October 1995"
I have carefully looked at the bottom of the teapot shown in two
photos above
The one from the Ebay auction is not very clear, but the one we
took after receiving it clearly shows the name ASCOT but I cannot
see any numbers as wriiten above
Patent Number
No comment was made on the number
301862 which is written on the teapot lid
Does this number indicate age??? - or pattern??? - or ???
Backstamps
This information detailed below is from the "backstamps"
link included in the above appraisal and appears to contradict
the thoughts of the appraiser in respect to the age of this teapot
- ???
The New Royal Winton backstamp Notice the circle around the Royal Winton name The 1995 indicates the year that Grimwades re-established itself as Grimwades Ltd Some items made between 1995 and 1998 may NOT have the 1995 Year indicator at the bottom of the mark But ALL have a circle around Royal Winton and say "LTD", with a period, after the Grimwades name Current "general issue" patterns are Florence, Julia, Majestic, Marion, Old Cottage, Richmond, Royalty, Stratford, Summertime, and Welbeck The majority of the re-issues were produced in 1997 and later Photos of the backstamps on the cup, saucer, plate and teapot are above ------None of them have a circle around the name!! ------None of them have "1995"!! ------None of them have "LTD"!! BASED ON THESE POINTS, IT CANNOT BE A REPRODUCTION --- CAN IT? --- CONFUSING, EH!!! |
|
An early Royal Winton backstamp This is what the stamp on the cup, saucer and plate looks like The teapot has a similar mark, but has "Made in England" instead of "England" - and refer to the example below |
|
A little later Royal Winton backstamp The "A" was incorporated after 1943 This is very similar to what the stamp on the teapot looks like It does not have the "A" so, based upon this description, it would be pre-1943 - ??? |

Q: Give any other details you feel are pertinent |
A: Hi and this item has recently been appraised Please refer to DELUXE APPRAISAL reference number 75859 Before going on, could I ask you to please refer to the Web Site/URL I have included This page includes all the details on the teapot, purchase details, photos, plus copies of the Appraisal request and certificate mentioned earlier We are quite happy with this Appraisal and have already submitted a feedback form, but it raised a few new questions that I would like to get clarified if I could!!! If you log on to the web site and scroll down to the bottom of the page, you will see a section called "Notes on the Valuation" Included in this are four items, these being (1) Size and/or Capacity (2) Year of Manufacture (3) Patent Number and (4) Backstamps Would you mind looking at these, and letting us know what your thoughts are - in particular, the 'backstamp' section seems to indicate that the teapot was made prior to 1943 Please understand that this second appraisal request is in no way a criticism of Camille Buda or her report We would just like these four points clarified Thank you, and we look forward to hearing from you Regards, Geoff and Sharon |

Kovel's Schroeder's English registry and patent marks found in "Collectible Ceramics" written by Marcia Ray, 1974 |
Appraiser Comments: |
Capacity No matter what Chintz decoration was applied to the old Ascot shape, a Royal Winton Grimwade teapot would only hold four cups of liquid Year of Manufacture and Patent Number The number on the lid is a registry patent number The number pictured indicates a manufacture date of 1898 Royal Winton Grimwade's "Old Cottage" wasn't made until the 1930s and reissued in the 1990s Backstamp and Marks The back stamp pictures shown at the URL site you provided are different than those submitted with your request for appraisal The appraisal was based on the picture you originally submitted The incised mark in that picture, just below the Grimwade's backstamp, is unclear and probably upside down It certainly looks like the number 1095 But right side up it could be the word ASCOT Incised marks were not generally found on early Chintz Wear and Crazing This still does not explain the lack of wear and absence of crazing on the teapot or the lack of light soiling on the bottom The site at the URL you provided has additional Chintz pictures If you look carefully, one of them shows a piece that has slight soiling and minor glaze flakes on an edge That is the type of wear that should be found on the bottom of your teapot I hope this information helps |
