The showdown between two
of Cairns' highest profile players will highlight tomorrow's Cairns
Baseball League A grade match between Cubs and Paramount Hire
Shogun Heat.
Hard-hitting left-hander Brett Roneberg slotted nicely
into the Playpen Cubs line-up for the first time last week after
returning from his duties in the United States.
The Australian representative, who plays at AA level with a Montreal
Expos feeder club, smashed three home runs, but it wasn't enough
for Cubs to bring home the bacon as they lost both games of the
double-header.
How Roneberg goes against the experience of Cameron Cairncross should be enthralling.
Cairncross, playing for the first time this
season since seriously injuring his pitching shoulder while training
with the Cleveland Indians last year, has lost some of his pace
- but Cubs coach Matt Bolton knows experience counts for a lot.
"You've got two incredibly competitive guys right there and
neither of them is going to give an inch," Bolton said yesterday.
"Brett hit Cameron for a double last week and then Cameron
struck him out at his next time at bat.
"Lefty (left-handed pitcher) against lefty (left-handed batter)
should also make things interesting."
Tomorrow's game will be the first nine-innings match for both teams in some time with seven-innings double-headers having highlighted play in recent weeks.
The match starts at 2pm at the Trinity Beach
diamonds.
