The $1 Silver Kangaroo coin for 2002 features a design from a painting by Mark Nodea from Warmun (Turkey Creek), south-west of Kununurra in the Kimberley region of Western Australia.
Mark's paintings reflect the colours of the Kimberley area and the nearness of the Bungle Bungles, as well as the traditions of the Gija people that are kept alive through paintings, oral re-telling of stories and corroboree.
Produced in the usual proof and frosted uncirculated finishes and presented in packaging that retains the warm red and ochre colours of the 2001 $1 Kangaroo coins, the 2002 coins are the second in the current series that depict Aboriginal designs and the tenth release in the Royal Australian Mint's Kangaroo Coin Series which began in 1993.
The reverse design of this $1 one Troy Ounce coin that celebrates Australia's best known animal, the Kangaroo, was sculpted by Vladimir Gottwald, while Ian Rank-Broadley's portrait of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II features on the obverse.
