Friday 31st October 2014 . Innisfail State College Sports Awards Dinner |
I managed to 'invite myself' to Innisfail where
Brett was, at Tammie Thorntons invitation, a Guest at the
College's Sports Awards Presentations Tammie said she was the Guest Speaker there last year and she wished her Mum had been there !! |
The format used for Brett was actually "An
Interview" by Rachel Ugarte, one of the students They were both sitting on high stools at the front of the room and Brett was asked some prepared questions He was able to expand on the questions and talk about the experiences he had playing baseball He was pretty funny too Rachel got a little tongue tied sometimes but she was able to see the funny side when Brett teased her a little !! |
They played a video of Brett hitting a home run
against Greece in the Olympics and asked him all about that 'at
bat' He explained the game of baseball - tactics, etc - and said he was pretty sure what kind of pitch he would get because Dave Nielson was next up to bat |
He also spoke about all the training he did He was given some good advice once by a Coach ... "Hit every day ... that is your strength Practice every day because if you dont, there is someone somewhere who is and he will take your spot Therefore practice your strength every day" He mentioned the support from his parents and how he and his Dad worked every day in the offseason so he would be ready for the new season He also had Rachel convinced he had left his Olympic Silver Medal at home because Tammie had forgotten to ask him until we were on our way down there !! But he had it with him !! |
After the evening was over lots of kids asked
to have their photo taken with him and he was very gracious too Some parents spoke to him too about how to best give their children opportunities to improve |
The Mayor of Innisfail, Bill Shannon, was quite
taken with Brett to and very interested in his experiences ...
I was eavesdropping !! I like listening to him speak in these situations ... and I am very proud of him and what he has achieved !! I enjoyed the evening very much !! |
