Friday 6th to Monday 16th July 2012

Under 16 National Basketball Championships
Tamworth ... New South Wales

.

?? What is this all about ??

A note from Trish Nicholls ... before the Tournament ... Wednesday 27th June 2012

I would like to take this opportunity to introduce you to Tanya Roneberg

Tanya is joining us from far North Queensland ... Cairns, in fact
Tanya heads up the statisticians' Coordinators role for the NBL team, the Cairns Taipans

In Tamworth she will be assisting me in the coordination of the tournament and the day to day running of the event
as part of her qualification commitments to attaining her Level 3 nomination

Tanya is currently working on completing the first couple of days of the roster
and we will send these first drafts through to you as soon as they are completed
I am sure we will need a couple of revisions before we get it right

.

A note from Tanya ... after the Tournament

I am currently a Level 2 Qualified Basketball Statistician in Australia ... and my wish is to move up to a Level 3

This higher qualification will mean that I can train and assess people,
as well as run national and international tournaments ... including the Commonwealth Games
And Queensland is hosting the Games in 2018 ... which is one of the main reasons for me wanting to go to the next level !!

After lots of badgering of people and support from the New South Wales State Coordinator Trish Nicholls
and National Coordinator Lauretta Claus, I finally got my ticket to Tamworth for the Under 16 Boys and Girls National Titles

I arrived in Tamworth on the Friday and was picked up at the hotel by Trish and Lesley and we headed to the stadium
It was during the three minute car ride that Trish told me I was running the tournament from the point of view of statistics !!
I was completely surprised as I expected to be following Trish around making notes about how to run the tournament

Running the tournament involved:-
#1 - staffing one-hundred-andten games over eight days
and compare this to the fact that at NBL level (Taipans), I staff fifteen games over six months !!
#2 - ensuring laptops, printers, toners, internet connection, paper, spotters sheets, lollies, pens etc were available for all games

I also had to assess statisticians and decide whether or not they were doing a good job, plus then provide feedback to them
Part of this was deciding who was doing the best job and therefore they would be rostered on the Medal games
And I didn't actually realise that was as big a deal as it was
everyone wants to do those games ... just like everyone wants to play in them !!

I had to liaise with the Basketball Australia Representative and Tournament Director to have my finals rostering approved
and despite being nervous about it, I put myself on to call the Men's Gold Medal game
The game turned out to be a 'blow out' but it was still fun

During one game the court was slippery and mid game we had to pick up all the gear from one court (printer and two laptops)
and move it down to another court so no one got injured

We (me and Trish - but mostly Trish because I was carless but I went with them) also had to ensure
that out of town statisticians doing the late games were fed and returned to their accommodation

I was at the stadium at 8.00am every morning and didn't leave until 9.30pm most nights and then it was dinner and hotel shuttles
Then it was back to the hotel for more rostering and daily debrief with Trish and Lesley
which didn't actually involve much basketball talk but did involved lots of red wine and chocolate ... hehehe

The days were long and apart from wanting to kill myself on the Sunday I was very happy with how it all went

And Trish was too because she sent me an email, which also went to the National Coordinator, that said:-
Hi Tanya ... just wanted to send you my personal congratulations on a tournament well run !!
It has been a pleasure to train and work with you over the course of the past week
You quickly adjusted to the rostering and workload and ran a very successful tournament
Your selections to the finals series were well thought out after a week of managing people and evaluating their competencies
I am pleased to say I will be delighted to recommend you to the Australian Statistics Committee for your Level 3
Enjoy your couple if days of 'r-and-r' before heading home ... Kind regards ... Trish

Below you'll see a photo of the Grand Final crew (refer to #12)
It shows Don Vermeer from South Australia, Me, Lesley Neilson from Sydney, and Terri Kay from Tamworth
It was clearly cold and I was wearing:-
tights, socks, jeans, boots, a long sleeve thermal, a long sleeve top, the tournament t-shirt, my winter jacket
and the Basketball Australia technical officials jacket and gloves ... plus one day I even wore a beanie on the bench !!

Photos received from Trish Nicholls

Hi Geoff
Found these photos from our time together in Tamworth
Tanya is just about to call the Grand Final
The culmination of a week of hard work and a reward for the effort she put in throughout the tournament
It was freezing cold and she even had gloves on ... not a common site to see from a girl from Cairns !!
