Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT)

The Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) is a two-hour aptitude test that assists applicants in demonstrating their potential for tertiary study and helps tertiary institutions in making their selection decisions.  The test is widely accepted and used by most tertiary institutions in Queensland and many others throughout Australia.

There are a number of versions of the STAT.  For entry to Queensland tertiary institutions, QTAC administers the STAT Multiple Choice.  This version is made up of 70 multiple-choice questions, half of which are verbal and the other half are quantitative.

As the test itself is not designed to test your specific knowledge of certain subjects, you do not have to 'study' for the test.  All the information is given to you in the exam.  The questions focus on your ability to process, analyse and understand material presented in a variety of forms including graphs, prose and cartoons.

A STAT result may improve your chances of selection. You can sit the test once per year. The current year commences 1 May 2008 and will end 30 April 2009. If you have sat the test more than once, your highest results will be used in assessing your QTAC application.

Should I sit the STAT?

The answer depends on the qualifications you already have, and which institution you wish to attend.  The following information is a general guide to who should sit the test.

You may find that STAT improves your case for tertiary entry in the following circumstances:

Alternative Entry

It is recommended that you sit the STAT if you have no formal academic qualifications and you are applying for entry on the basis of alternative entry qualifications.  These qualifications include: professional qualifications; employment experience; and Personal Competencies Assessment.  A STAT result alone can provide you with a selection rank that may be used on its own or it may be combined with your professional qualifications, employment experience or Personal Competencies Assessment, depending on the specific institution policy.  If you have completed Year 12 or equivalent but did not achieve your desired result, you may consider applying via Alternative Entry and sitting the STAT. Senior External Examination

If you have partially completed the Senior External examination (i.e. one, two or three subjects), a STAT result can be combined with your subject results to increase your overall selection rank.  Please note that age requirements apply (see below).  If you are 21 or over and have completed four subjects you are not required to sit the STAT. However, if you do sit the STAT, QTAC will use the higher of the selection ranks derived from either your four subjects or your best one, two or three subjects combined with your STAT result. Competency-Based Training (CBT)

A number of tertiary institutions, TAFE and registered training organisations in particular, have competency-based training (CBT), whereby students receive grades of 'competent' and 'not yet competent'.  If you are undertaking a certificate, associate diploma, diploma, advanced diploma or degree course in which the assessment is competency-based, it is strongly recommended that you sit the STAT to potentially improve your selection rank.  No age requirements apply, however institution policies vary regarding the use of ranks allocated on the basis of competency-based assessment for current internal Year 12 students.

A STAT result is only used to upgrade your selection rank if you achieve competency in all subjects undertaken.  It is not used if some subjects are 'not yet competent'. If this is the case, it is important that you repeat the subject and achieve competency as soon as possible.  If your course is a combination of graded and competency-based assessment, it still may be advantageous to sit the STAT if at least one quarter of your assessment is competency-based. Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation

The Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation is a preparatory course conducted by TAFE Queensland institutes and some private providers.  A STAT result can be combined with the results from this certificate to improve your selection rank.  To qualify for the certificate you are required to successfully complete five subjects (including the subject Language and Learning Skills), although some institutions will combine the STAT with a minimum of two subjects (partial completion).  No age requirement applies to combining the STAT with the Certificate IV in ATP, however there may be an age requirement in order to undertake the course.  Check with the institution offering the course.

A STAT result may also be combined with results from other preparatory/bridging courses.  Check with the admissions office of the institution to which you intend to apply.

Subject prerequisites

The STAT may also be used to satisfy some subject prerequisites.  For example, a good STAT result may satisfy the English subject prerequisite and a good score in the quantitative subsection of the STAT may satisfy the mathematics subject prerequisite for some institutions.  Age requirements may apply.  View more....

Generally, current Year 12s are not able to sit the STAT to satisfy subject prerequisites.

Institutional Policies on STAT

If you are currently studying internal Year 12, STAT is generally not accepted as a means of entry to tertiary courses.  For further clarification it is essential that you check with the admissions office of the institution you wish attend.
