Trent Oeltjen
- Outfielder
On setting the table
Oeltjen: Thats just my job as a leadoff man, to get on and let
the boys drive me in. I think that one through nine we all did
that tonight; we got 17 runs and 22 hits, that was special
On setting a WBC record with 22 hits
Oeltjen: That's a pretty good record for the Australian team,
which is pretty special
On Chemistry
Oeltjen: We have a pretty special feel, everybody knows each
others personality and we all go out there and have fun doing
what we have to do. This is just a fun team to be a part of
You all seemed pretty calm after a home run
Oeltjen: We just go out there every inning and try to execute
and score more runs and execute. In the end the game will take
care of itself
Were you surprised at beating Mexico by the mercy rule
in Mexico City?
Oeltjen: Id like to say no, but it was a pretty special night
Andy Graham -
Catcher
How does it feel to not only beat Mexico,
but to win convincingly?
Graham: It's one of those things we were talking about the other
day; how great it would be to beat Mexico in the first game.
The crowd was going was going crazy but we just came out here
and played our game, executed and we didn't have to worry about
the scoreboard since it would take care of itself. I looked up
in the eighth inning and realized we were up by eight runs, then
ten runs and it was just amazing. It was a great game and a great
feeling
Was Craig Anderson affected by the error?
Graham: Its one of those things in baseball, you make an error
and something big happens for the offensive team. It wasn't that
he made a bad pitch; it was more that the other guys took a great
hack at it and hit the grand slam. You take that pitch away,
he grounds out, and the game is totally a different story. Were
just a scrappy team and we'll never give up so you're going to
have to stick on us for the whole nine innings
On the relief pitching
Graham: They threw strikes. Get ahead, go off-speed, go in and
out and keep them off balance. If you get behind, you get hurt.
You get ahead, you had them and that's the way you have to pitch
On his offensive performance
Graham: It felt great to contribute on the catching side but
also put some numbers on the board for the boys and get a couple
of knocks. I'm just excited that I helped the team out
What did you notice about the switch of momentum?
Graham: It was great. The momentum was going towards the Mexicans
but they (relievers) put a bunch of strikes on the board and
got through that quickly. We got some runs and got the momentum
back and had it the rest of the game
You had Tommy John surgery, do you feel stronger now?
Graham: My arm and my swing are much stronger. Without Tommy
John surgery it's hard to come inside the ball but now I can
hit the ball the other way. My arm feels stronger, it feels a
lot better than before I did the surgery but it's still not at
full strength yet
Paul Elliot -
Hitting Coach
On the offense against Mexico
Elliot: Nothing in particular, this is a group of professional
players. They have a pretty simple approach and our job is to
keep the swing direction through the middle, get good pitches
to hit, work the count and we did all that last night. It was
just an extension of what we did in Arizona
Is the staff not surprised at the production?
Elliot: I think it's a credit to the organizations they've been
with. Our job is not to tinker with them much. Once they trust
in (their skills) the results will come. It's about getting into
good hitting counts, which we found ourselves in a lot last night.
It was just a matter of time, if we play fundamentally sound
after nine innings of the game, the scoreboard doesnt really
matter, you look up and all of a sudden you're in front and that's
the way we approach it
What will you do against Cuba?
Elliot: Nothing different, you have to get good pitches to hit
by working the counts. We'll be aggressive when we get a chance
to and it should be alright for us
Do you think you match up well with Cuba?
Elliot: Yeah, we know what to expect, they're a tough club. Let's
face it, three-quarters of them should be playing in the big
leagues. We've played them very well, they've got our respect
and we have theirs and that's a big plus. We're pretty confident
against this club
Is this the same Cuban team that youve faced?
Elliot: It's most of the same players, a few I think have retired
but what they've replaced them with is quality
Brett
Roneberg - Infielder
You've been under the weather lately
but how are you feeling?
Roneberg: It was good to just get the hits and the runs
How much did you guys feed off each other?
Roneberg: All of a sudden is was two to nothing and it just rolled
from there. We were on fire it was a good night
What do you expect from Cuba?
Roneberg: They're not going to take us lightly; we've beaten
them many times. We'll be ready for them and its going to be
a hell of a game
Does Cuba not being in their homeland factor into the game?
Roneberg: A little bit I guess. It's going to be a tough game
either way. The pitching is what's going to decide it. Cuba is
a good team and they are not going to roll over on us and were
not doing the same for them either
Do you take a different approach when you face a more talented
team?
Roneberg: You take it the same as every other day, you just play
your game
Travis Blackley
- Pitcher
Can you talk a little about team Cuba?
Blackley: I faced them on the U-19 team way back in 2000 but
I haven't pitched against their senior team. Three years ago
in Taiwan we played them well. I'm pretty confident
What will your approach be against them?
Blackley: You just have to watch what they are doing at the plate.
You can have all the scouting reports you want but sometimes
guys make adjustments and you have to make your own adjustments.
I'm just going to stay with my strengths and hopefully that's
going to be the right way to take care of them
You have Major League experience - do you see them as a
ML team?
Blackley: You take every team the same way. Winning is the most
important part, I don't have anything going for me personally.
I just want to make sure we are in a great position when I come
out of the game
Do you think the team is more motivated with you on the
mound?
Blackley: I hope we're not relaxed. I want us to stay with the
same intensity. If anybody is sitting back I'll be the first
one to let them know. If I see anybody a little too relaxed I'm
certainly going to get into them
What approach will you take against their power hitters?
Blackley: It's just like any team. The whole key to pitching
is to move them in and out, back and forth. You have to get ahead
in the count and put the pressure on them to swing at pitches
they wouldn't normally swing at. It shouldn't change based on
who you are playing. They may be teams that you can get away
with more mistakes with but a team like Cuba and Mexico, they
take care of mistakes and in a ballpark like this, and you don't
even have to hit the ball well to hit a home run. I'm looking
to stay within myself and do what I know I can do
How do you plan to counteract the altitude factor?
Blackley: I've pitched at high altitude before in Colorado, Salt
Lake City, Albuquerque but this another level, this is two-and-a-half
thousand feet above sea level. I'll just try to mix it up back
and forth
Pat Kelly - Assistant
Coach
How proud are you of your guys?
Kelly: It was a tremendous job by the boys. We don't get a whole
lot of credit with this ballclub. With all the hard work that
we put into this it's nice to see a good win. It's a positive
that comes from all the hard work that all these guys put in
since they were twelve years old. It was a good day for Australian
baseball
What did the win last night do for the team internationally?
Kelly: The better we play the more attention and recognition
that we're going to get. For our sport, we need to get seen at
the highest level
As a former big leaguer how do you see these opponents?
Kelly: In the Majors and Minors you have 140-plus games to play
and you can take your bad outings. In tournament play you have
to play as a team and you have to execute. You're not playing
for the name on your back, you're playing for the name on the
front. We may not be Major League All Stars but these guys play
as a team and we play for Australia
What do you think brings this team together?
Kelly: I think its a common bond of where they came from. A lot
of these guys played as juniors on the National teams. They might
not have played recently but a lot of them played together. We
have one style of baseball and it's taught all the way up club
ball through the Major League academy. They stick to one common
set of goals
Ben Risinger
- Infielder
Did you feel that your home run was
the nail in the coffin?
Risinger: It was just fun to be a part of
Did your approach change in this environment?
Risinger: When you get into a park where the ball flies sometimes
you try too hard so you just try to keep is as simple as you
can. I think we did a good job of that as a whole
What was the game plan when you realized Mexico pitching
wasn't what it was made up to be?
Risinger: We just have to grind it out. We jumped out and then
they came back at us and then we managed to fight back. It was
great to come back as a team
What was it about the Mexican pitchers that you were able
to pick up on?
Risinger: I think as a whole we just had a pretty good game plan.
I think it had to do more with our lineup than their pitching
What do you expect to see out of Cuba?
Risinger: They are a tough team, it's going to be a challenge,
but I think we are up to it. I'm looking forward to it
Is there a smaller margin of error while playing Cuba?
Risinger: You have to be on, you can't give those guys any more
outs than the game allows. They have proven year in and year
out that they are one of the best teams in the world |
