#01 - "The Blue Door"
Lefkis Paros The Greek Islands

Comments - I picked this photo because for me it just screamed GREECE
The bright white buildings and blue doors and windows with the cobbled streets
......and of course the bougainvillea
The pot at the front gate of my unit here in Cairns has the Greek symbol for infinity
around the top and the bougainvillea growing in it for that reason

***************************************************************

#02 - "Five Lands"
Riomaggiore La Spezia Cinque Terre

Comments - I stayed in this town when I was in the Cinque Terre and had heard such
good reports about the area that I extended my stay before I got there
......and was very glad that I did
It was still a relatively untouched place when I visited
Every boat had a cat in it
I took an identical picture to this one in the morning but went back to watch the sunset
and the colours on the buildings were much more vivid while the sun was on them
Karen was here for a night with me and it was a very relaxing place
I remember drinking lots of red wine and eating lots of pesto
The Cinque Terre is where pesto was invented
and I brought my mortar and pestle from the third of the Five Lands

***************************************************************

#03 - "Age shall not weary Them"
"Lone Pine Cemetery"
Gallipoli Turkey

Comments - I had booked this trip to Turkey before I even left Australia
It was a very emotional trip and I haven't missed a dawn service since
I remember standing at the top of the cliffs where our diggers landed (the wrong place)
and wonder how they ever stood a chance
I remember reading the commemorative plaques of the young Australian soldiers
who lost their lives and being grateful for their sacrifice
I remember the goose bumps I got hearing The Last Post
as the sun came up over the beach on Anzac Day
I remember not being able to speak (let alone sing)
while the National Anthem was played on the beach at Gallipoli
I remember dancing and singing with my friends
while the Australian Navy Band played "I still call Australia Home"

***************************************************************

#04 - "Michelangelo's Masterpiece"
"The Sistine Chapel"
Rome Italy

Comments - Despite not being Catholic and not particularly religious either (sorry Mum),
I could not help but be completely in awe walking in to the Sistine Chapel
It is indeed a masterpiece
Despite taking (illegally) pictures myself,
I had to buy this picture from the nuns in a tiny shop beside St Peter's Basilica
They couldn't speak a word of English but held my hand and couldn't have been more friendly

***************************************************************

#05 - "The Eiffel Tower"
Paris France

NOTE - this is a Photo-on-Canvas

Comments - Valentine's Day with my two single girlfriends
and my first trip overseas from my new "home" in London
Or underseas really ... we took the Eurostar which goes under the English Channel
This was the day we arrived and I was very proud of how postcard-like this picture was

***************************************************************

#06 - "My Boyfriend Ben"
London England

Comments - The Houses of Parliament were my favourite building in London
If ever I was near Westminster I would also go and have another look
When I was living at the Pub in Battersea I would ride past 'Ben' every afternoon
and I always had a smile on face ... I lived here!

***************************************************************

#07 - "The Running of the Bulls"
San Fermin Pamplona Spain

Comments - I had to buy this poster ... there was no way I was getting this close!
This was the start of my three month European trip
The tradition of the Opening Ceremony
and the enthusiasm and friendliness of the locals got my trip off to a great start
This also reminds me a little of the terrorist bombs going off in London
which was just after my trip started

***************************************************************

#08 - "Heidi in the Alps"
Switzerland

Comments - After nearly three months of travel and beaches and sunshine,
Switzerland was certainly a change
We stayed in log cabins with fires,
and played in the snow at the top of the highest railway in Europe
On the day this picture was taken we had been up the railway and walked down
the mountain through fields and towns with flower filled window boxes on all of the houses
(it was cheaper to get a one way ticket)
It was a long walk and I felt like Heidi but the scenery we saw made it definitely worth it

***************************************************************

#09 - "My White Christmas"
Scotland

Comments - Picking a photo from this trip was always going to happen!
We had been on a bus from Edinburgh to Inverness
and it snowed the whole way and stopped just before Inverness
......but there had been no snow
We then went out to a bar in town and when we got home in the early hours
it still hadn't snowed and we were all very disappointed
I was first up in the morning, to leave the dorm room so a call from Mum and Dad
wouldn't wake my room-mates, and when I was in the lounge I thought it looked different outside
...... I didn't have my contacts in!
The night porter at the dorm lent me her shoes and I ran outside and talked on the phone
to the family back in Cairns where it was probably 35 degrees
I remember this day because we made snow angels in fresh snow in front of the castle
and then went skinny dipping in Loch Ness before a traditional Xmas lunch (not prawns and salad)

***************************************************************

#10 - "Our Bridge"
"Hammersmith Bridge"
London England

Comments - I used to cross this Bridge twice a day when I lived in Barnes
It is a lovely bridge that is seen in some movies
(Sliding Doors is one that I watch when I want to remember)
It is also the middle point of the Oxford Cambridge Boat Race each year, and on the
right of the picture you can see both boats going under the bridge the last year that I was there
I brought one each for Tamara and myself when we were "evicted"!

***************************************************************

#11 - "Windmills"
Kinderdijk Holland

Comments - Where else but Holland!
I went to Holland the first year I was away
I had read about the windmills at Kinderdijk in my Lonely Planet and worked out how
to get a train from Amsterdam to Rotterdam and then catch a bus to see them
When I walked down the path to see them I felt transported back in time
The windmills were so well preserved,
and I think they look beautiful with the oncoming storm (which saturated me) behind them

***************************************************************

#12 - "Everlasting Egypt"
"Pyramid and Sphinx"
Egypt

Comments - My 29th birthday and one that wont soon be forgotten!
All of Egypt was amazing!
Donkey rides to the Valley of the Kings, Luxor, Aswan and spending my actual birthday
having dinner in an Egyptian family's home and having henna art done on my hand
and spending the night on a felucca under the stars
......but seeing the Pyramid and the Sphinx was something special

***************************************************************

#13 - "Venetian Mask"
Venice Italy

Comments - There was no way I was going to Venice and not get a mask!
I looked in shop after shop and in market stalls until I found this lovely girl
I then slept on it because they are quite expensive but I decided she was worth it
The next day I managed to find my way back through the winding lanes to buy her
She is just beautiful!
Venice was just as I had imagined
and I wanted something equally as special to remind me of this magical place
My first view of the Grand Canal took my breath away
and then taking a gondola ride on it was surreal
The winding cobbled streets and dark cafes
contrasted greatly with the vast Saint Marks Square and bustle of the canals

***************************************************************

#14 - "Egyptian Papyrus"
"King Tutankhamun and his wife Ankhesanamum"
Giza Egypt

Comments - I had just been wandering in and around the pyramids and sphinx at Giza when we
went to the papyrus shop so I was definintely feeling the history and the culture of the country
I brought a couple of papyrus for friends and I wanted one for myself as a memory of my visit
This papyrus pictures King Tutankahmen exchanging lotus flowers with his wife, Ankhesanamum
Lotus flowers were a symbol of love and rebirth and I loved the colours of this painting
I have always loved dark cosy bedrooms and I thought this colour palette could be my starting point
(and it was) - with my bedroom now having browns and golds in it
