Game Two

---South Korea v Australia---

*******************************************************************

Result

South Korea 16 defeated Australia 2
in seven innings

Game Reports

Australia knocked around by South Korea
When Glenn Williams drove in the first Australian run in the first with a single, nobody had thought what would happen afterwards
The South Korean offense took over in the bottom of the same period and pounded the opposing pitching with sixteen runs over the next four frames
They won by a score of 16-2 in seven innings and cemented their status as heavy favorite with this lopsided victory
Seung Yuop Lee (3-3) hit a three-run-homerun, scored three times and got four RBI
Dae Ho Lee had two hits and three RBI
Joo Chan Lee delivered a bases-clearing double
Hyun Jin Ryu (W 1-0) needed only a solid start to receive the win
He allowed one run on seven hits and a hit by pitch, striking out four in 4.1 innings pitched
Ki Joo Han, Woon Sam Jang and Doo Sung Hwan finished the game
Aussie starter Greg Wiltshire (L 0-1) was charged with three hits, four runs and two walks in just one period
However Chris Mowday and Mark Kelly also could not stop the pouring
Paul Weichard struck out three in two perfect innings at the end
But it was too late

"SEOUL SEARCHING" – Aussies drop game two, 16-2, to South Korea
The Australian Baseball Team faced a sobering experience in Taichung on Saturday, going down 16-2 to a white-hot Korean outfit in their second game of the 2008 IBAF Final Olympic Qualifying Tournament
In a sharp about-face from their performance against Germany just twenty-four hours earlier, the Australian offence impressed against the Korean hurlers, while their usually solid pitching was well below par
The Aussies jumped out of the gate quickly in the top of the first inning when Daniel Berg crushed a fastball into the gap in left-centre for a stand-up double before being driven in two batters later on a Glenn Williams RBI single to left
But after an ideal start to the game, things rapidly deteriorated for Australia, as the Koreans began a relentless assault that couldn’t have ended quickly enough for Head Coach Jon Deeble
“Our pitchers just failed to execute at any point on the mound tonight” Deeble said addressing a hoard of Korean media after the game
“I thought there were a lot of positives on offence - our guys banged out ten hits and probably hit the ball hard another five or six times
We just didn’t pitch very well, and when you’re facing a team of professional hitters like the Koreans, you need to do a better job of locating your pitches” he said
2007 World Cup hero Greg Wiltshire started for Australia and was far from his best, allowing three hits and walking two in a four run opening frame
And things did not improve when Wilshire’s relief corps arrived, with Chris Mowday and Mark Kelly combining to allow another twelve runs over the next three innings, hammering an early nail in Australia’s coffin
Despite the crushing defeat there remained a few bright spots for the Aussies as Ben Risinger, Mathew Kent and Paul Weichard all enjoyed multi-hit games at the plate
Weichard added to the impressive performance by mopping up the final two innings on the mound for Australia, retiring all six batters he faced and striking out three
The Aussies are now faced with a short turnaround when they match-up against Canada at 3.35pm AEDT in a game that becomes even more important after their loss to Korea
Sunday’s contest will mark the sixth time the two countries have played each other in the last eleven days after the five game Exhibition Series held in Queensland last week
However in what is sure to be a far cry from a “friendly”, tomorrow’s game will give the winner a distinct advantage if faced with a probable tie-breaker scenario at the conclusion of the seven game tournament
Canada (2-0) and Australia (1-1) are likely to be two of the teams fighting out for one of three Olympic berths and “head-to-head” results will prove crucial

South Korea 16 - Australia 2
The Koreans overwhelmed the Aussies in a mercy rule victory after helping themselves to big runs in the first, third and fourth innings at the Taichung Intercontinental Baseball Stadium
They have now joined Taiwan and Canada at the top of the standings

Australia v South Korea
In a highly-anticipated battle between two pre-tournament favorites, only one team – Korea – lived up to the hype
The Asian power put up sixteen runs in the first four innings and never looked back, eventually topping Australia 16-2 in a mercy-rule-shorted, seven-inning win
The typically lively Australian fans were quieted early following a four run Korean first, and it didn’t get any better for the Aussies from there
Seung Yuop Lee led the attack for the Koreans, going 3-3 with two runs scored, one homerun and four RBI
Starter Hyun Jin Ru was solid, scattering seven hits and two runs, while logging four strikeouts in 4.1 innings pitched
Glenn Williams was one of the few bright spots for Australia, driving in both of his team’s runs
