Australia had no answer
for Chinese Taipei starter Chien-Fu Yang, going down 8-1 in last
nights Financial Wealth International Baseball Challenge at Melbourne
Ballpark (Altona)
Yang was too good for the home side, holding the Aussies to five
hits over seven innings while recording sx strikeouts
Wei-Ming Chu closed the game down with a hitless final two innings
to earn the save
Chinese Taipei took advantage of two big innings by scoring four
runs in the third inning and four more in the ninth
Third-baseman Yung-Chi Chen drove in three runs, including a two-run
scoring double in the third and first-baseman Chih-Sheng Lin added
two of his own
Chinese Taipei attacked again in the ninth inning against reliever
Phil Stockman, who struggled with his control
After Stockman got the first out, he derailed hitting Chun-Chang
Yeh with the pitch and walking the next three batters, including
one with the bases loaded
After a fielders choice scored another run, Chi-Sheng Lin cleared
the bases with a two-run scoring triple and that was all for the
2004 Silver Medalist
Glen Richards then proceeded to record the final out to end the
inning
Australia didn't get many chances and left the bases loaded in
the seventh inning when Paul Rutgers struck out with two out
Rutgers however accounted for two of the Aussies five hits on
the night
Australia's only run was scored when Brad Harman singled in Brad
Dutton in the sixth inning
Despite allowing eight runs, Aussie pitchers struck out nine batters,
with Tristan Crawford netting four in his 1-1/3 innings of work
Starting pitcher Wayne Lundgren picked up the loss after allowing
six hits and four earned runs in four innings of work
Both teams will face off for the final time tonight in Geelong,
concluding the eight-game series at 7.30pm EST at Geelong Baseball
Centre, Waurn Ponds
Australia leads the series 4-3
