Introduction

Although I'm not a scout, I have no shortage of opinions, as you'll soon see if you haven't already!!
I certainly believe a lot can be told from minor league stats
A lot of observation is needed, too, of course
I try to dig up information where I can, mostly on the web, and I add my own observations, especially where I've seen a player a lot and feel reasonably confident about the impressions I've formed
I'm perfectly happy to add the observations or opinions of others, including dissenting opinions
I'm very interested in observations from other fans who get the chance to see the team's prospects in action and read them whenever they're posted on various Pirate-related blogs and the like
I'm not too hard to find online if you have observations you'd like to share
What I'm trying to do here is not to provide "definitive" reports on these players, even if I was capable of doing that, so much as present the best information I can find about players both well known and obscure

Wilbur Miller

BRETT RONEBERG

2/5/79; NDFA '96 (Florida); Australia

L/L; 6-1, 185

The Pirates signed Roneberg as a free agent for 2006, to help fill the void created by their lack of OF prospects

He joined the organization for the second time

He's moved up slowly from level to level, generally taking a couple of years to get acclimated at each

He seems to have settled in at the AA level as a corner OF with moderate power and good plate discipline

He had a decent year for Altoona in 2003, before having his best season in the Red Sox' system the following year

He also played for Australia in the 2004 Olympics, winning a Silver Medal

He missed 2005 due to shoulder surgery

Roneberg also plays 1B, another position at which the system is chronically short on talent

He was still recovering from the surgery at the start of the season, but once he was activated he alternated between 1B, the OF corners and DH
He had his usual solid season, although his power dropped off some, possibly some lingering effects from the surgery
He didn't hit LHPs well, posting a .667 OPS against them

He was a free agent after the season, but re-signed with the Pirates

He's a popular player in Altoona and the Pirates seem to try hard to maintain good relations with the franchise owners
They also have no corner OF prospects coming up from Lynchburg
