Heard during the Game

(#01) As Brett came in for his first at-bat, the commentator mentioned - "Brett comes in to tonight's game with a batting average of 0.305 which is second best in the Eastern League in that category ...... he is also tied for fourth in the League in on-base-percentage with a mark of 0.379"

(#02) After his two run home run in Brett's second at-bat, the commentator mentioned - "Brett now has seventy-four runs driven in for the year ...... that is second on the Curve, with the team leader being Simon Pond with seventy-seven ...... you have to remember that Brett missed the first couple of weeks of the season with an injured back"
(Brett has had 395 at-bats ...... Simon Pond has had 456)

(#03) In the top of the sixth inning, the Baysox were leading six runs to four and had a runner at first base ...... the next batter hit the ball in the infield ...... the throw went to second base and then the relay was made to first base, and the commentator said - "And that was a nice scoop by Roneberg at first base to complete the double play!!! ...... a great take to end the innings, and that will be our 'Blair County 'Sweetest-Play-Of-The-Game' for today!!!"

(#04) During Brett's fourth at-bat, the commentator said - "Brett is going to be a very important part of the Curve lineup during the playoffs which get underway next Wednesday ...... over his last five games he is batting 0.444 with two home runs"
(......and then he struck out!!! - so his five game average will drop just a bit!!!)

(#05) During the second game, the commentator mentioned - "Tomorrow is the final game of the regular season and before the game gets underway there is to be an announcement of the Curve's Most Valuable Player for this season ...... this will take place on the field ...... and Brett Roneberg would have to be the favourite to receive this, although there is a few other possibilities"

After rain postponed the first two games of their series, the Curve and Bowie Baysox finally got on the field on Sunday at Blair County Ballpark

Altoona’s comeback effort fell short after allowing the first six runs of the game, falling 6-4 in the first game of a doubleheader

Landon Jacobsen started for the Curve with a chance to tie the franchise record for the most victories in a season, but gave up five runs in the second inning on the way to his ninth loss of the year

The Baysox started the second inning with a walk and then used three consecutive singles to load the bases and score the first run of the game

Curve swept in doubleheader - one game remaining in regular season

After rain postponed the first two games of their series, the Curve and Bowie Baysox finally got on the field on Sunday at Blair County Ballpark

The Baysox swept the Curve, winning Game One, 6-4, and Game Two, 4-2

Just like in the first game, the Baysox scored first in the nightcap, jumping out to a 4-0 lead after their first two at-bats
Run-scoring hits by Raul Chavez, Gera Alvarez, and a sacrifice fly by Angel Chavez staked Bowie to an advantage they would not relinquish

All four runs were scored against Altoona's Josh Shortslef, who lost for just the second time this season, allowing two earned runs in two innings on five hits with one walk and one strikeout

The Curve would fight back with two runs in the second inning
Neil Walker walked to start the inning and Javier Guzman tripled with two outs to drive in the team’s first run
The next batter, Brant Ust, singled up the middle to chase Guzman home and cut the deficit in half

Matt Peterson pitched well out of the bullpen for the Curve, allowing no runs on four hits in four innings with six strikeouts

Bowie starter Garrett Olson improved to 4-0 against Altoona this season, giving up two runs in 5-2/3 innings on four hits with five strikeouts

Landon Jacobsen started Game One for the Curve with a chance to tie the franchise record for the most victories in a season, but gave up five runs in the second inning on the way to his ninth loss of the year

The Baysox started the second inning with a walk and then used three consecutive singles to load the bases and score the first run of the game

Mario Salas retired the final batter of the game to pick up the save after reliever Ryan Keefer had to leave the game with an injury

Andrew McCutchen was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and Guzman chipped in two hits for his team-leading thirty-sixthth multi-hit game

The two teams will conclude their regular season schedules with a 6.05pm game on Monday, Labor Day, at Blair County Ballpark
The Curve will send Wardell Starling to the mound against Bowie’s Brian Finch

It’s 'FANdemonium' at the ballpark with post-game fireworks

Alvarez cleans up Curve

Gerardo Alvarez belted a bases-loaded double to cap a five-run second inning as visiting Bowie edged Altoona, 6-4, in the first game of Sunday's doubleheader

Alvarez's double scored Ryan Hubele, Dustin Yount and Bryan Bass and gave the Baysox (65-74) a 5-0 lead
The 26-year-old shortstop had just three RBIs in his previous thirty games

Noah Hall slammed a solo homer, his twelfth, in the third

Starter Radhames Liz (3-1) tossed five innings and gave up four runs - three earned - on eight hits and five walks while striking out six

Marino Salas got the final out for his eighteenth save

Curve starter Landon Jacobsen (14-9) allowed six runs on seven hits and four walks while striking out four in six frames

Brett Roneberg ripped his tenth homer, a two-run shot in the third, and Andrew McCutchen went 3-for-4 with two runs scored for Altoona (75-62)

Olson caps Bowie sweep

Garrett Olson tossed 5-2/3 solid innings as visiting Bowie beat Altoona, 4-2, to complete a sweep of Sunday's doubleheader

Olson (6-5) surrendered two runs on four hits and four walks with five strikeouts

Nick McCurdy finished up with 1-1/3 scoreless frames to notch his third save

Gerardo Alvarez and Carlos Duran delivered RBI singles during a three-run second inning for Bowie (66-74)

Javier Guzman tripled in a run and scored on Brant Ust's single in the second for the Curve (75-63), who dropped the opener, 6-4

Altoona starter Josh Shortslef (6-2) gave up four runs - two earned - on five hits and a walk with one strikeout in two innings

Maxey Debuts - Baysox Sweep Curve Double Bill, 6-4 and 4-2

After two wet, rained out days, the Baysox and Curve began their final series of the season at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona, PA

Both Radhames Liz and Garrett Olson had excellent starts, while their offense lifted them to victories in their final outings of the season

The Baysox made a roster move before the first game Sunday afternoon, sending relief pitcher Chris Britton back up to Baltimore and activating Jason Maxey on the roster
Maxey, a local college product from Towson State, has been the Baysox bullpen catcher for the entire season

Liz faced off against Landon Jacobsen in Game One of the twin billing and outpitched the fourteen game winner in just five innings

Bowie took a commanding lead in the first end of the twinbill
After Jacobsen loaded the bases in the Baysox half of the second on a walk and two consecutive singles - one by Maxey - Dustin Yount singled into left field, scoring Noah Hall who had walked, with the first run of the game
Jacobsen then walked Bryan Bass to bring home Maxey and Gera Alvarez followed Bass by stroking a double to deep left field, clearing all three bases and giving the Baysox a 5-0 lead

Hall added another run for the Baysox in the top of the third with his twelfth home run of the season, a fly ball to center field

Altoona began a comeback with two runs in the home half of the third innings, compliments of a Brett Roneberg two-run homer off Radhames Liz - his tenth long ball of the year

In the bottom of the fifth, the Curve added two more runs, taking advantage of a passed ball by Ryan Hubele, his second in the game
Andrew McCutcheon found himself on third base after a single, a ground ball and a stolen base for Neil Walker
Walker reached on Angel Chavez' fielding error which allowed McCutcheon to score
After Liz gave up a walk and a single, Walker scampered in to score on Hubele's passed ball, cutting the Baysox lead to just two runs

But that would be all the Curve would be allowed as Ryan Keefer and Marino Salas combined to shutout the Curve the rest of the way
Salas picked up his eithteenth save of the season

In the nightcap the Baysox were led by lefthander Garrett Olson on the mound and nine Baysox hits off Curve hurler Josh Shortslef

Three straight hits with two outs in the top of the first plated Hall and gave Bowie a quick 1-0 lead

The visitors added to their lead with three more in the top of the second inning thanks in part to two Curve defensive mishaps
After Rayner Bautista reached on a throwing error and Bryan Bass drew a walk, Alvarez singled into left field, but left fielder Rafael Alvarez misplayed the ball, resulting in both Bautista and Bass crossing home plate
Two batters later Angel Chavez drove in Alvarez with the third run of the game

That would be all the Baysox would get on the night and Altoona had to play catchup once again

A walk to Neil Walker and three hits, including an RBI triple by Rafael Alvarez, cut the Baysox lead to two runs for the second time on the night

However, Olson was able to hold the Curve until Nick McCurdy relieved him in the middle of the sixth frame
McCurdy, who has had trouble this year with allowing inherited runners to score, entered the game with a man on base and the tying run at the plate but was able to retire the next batter to get Olson out of the inning
After giving up a lead off single in the seventh, the former Oklahoma State Cowboy retired the side to earn his third save

Maxey picked up a pinch-hit double in his lone at-bat in the second game and ended his AA debut 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored

On Deck
Altoona and Bowie both wrap up their regular season schedules with a game tommorrow evening in Altoona
RHP Brian Finch will take on Wardell Starling in the Baysox final game of the year

Curve lose two straight

Tropical Storm Ernesto rained out the Curve and Bowie Baysox on Friday and Saturday, setting up a doubleheader at Blair County Ballpark on Sunday

It was a long day-night of baseball
More than five hours that included a seventeen minute delay for a power failure when a bank of lights between third base and left field went out in the seventh inning of the first game

The crowd of 7,441 cheered the visit of Retro Celebrity Series star Jimmy ('JJ' of Good Times) Walker and they cheered another post-game fireworks show
However, the Curve didn’t give them much to cheer about, dropping both ends of the twin bill 6-4 and 4-2

Despite the double setback and a sub .500 record since the Eastern League All-Star break, Curve manager Tim Leiper doesn’t believe his club is limping to the finish line in advance of the playoffs

‘‘Are you kidding me?’’ he asked
‘‘We’re not limping to the finish line
We lost the first game tonight because of a foul ball, and we put forth a great job against that left-handed pitcher, Garrett Olson’’ said Leiper, who was ejected in the fifth inning of the second game for arguing balls and strikes with umpire Dan Belino
‘‘Look at our effort’’ Leiper continued
‘‘We deserved better than that’’

Olson, 6-5 overall, notched his fourth win of the season against the Curve by giving up only four hits and two runs while striking out five in 5-2/3 innings of the nightcap

Nick McCurdy worked the final 1-1/3 for his third save

Josh Shortslef started the second game for Altoona and suffered only his second defeat in eight decisions, giving up four runs and five hits in two innings

A five-run second inning keyed Bowie’s first-game victory
With the bases loaded, Gera Alvarez ripped one down the third base line that Leiper and Curve players thought was foul
However, it was ruled fair and three runs scored, giving the Baysox an insurmountable 5-0 lead

After Noah Hall socked a solo homer for Bowie in the third,
Altoona’s Brent Roneberg ripped a two-run homer in the bottom of the third

The Curve tacked on two more runs in the fifth but still came up short

Landon Jacobsen, who was seeking his fifteenth win, suffered his ninth loss in the opener
‘‘I definitely would have liked to have given our team a chance to win, but it didn’t go that way’’ said Jacobsen, who was touched up for six runs and seven hits in six innings

Even though he is the Curve’s leader in victories, the big right-hander said he doesn’t know when he will pitch in the playoffs, which begin Wednesday in Akron
‘‘I definitely won’t pitch Wednesday, and I honestly have no idea what their coaching staff plans are for the rotation’’ Jake said

He didn’t gain the fifteenth win, which would have tied the franchise’s single-season record for wins set by Branson Arroyo in 1999, but Jacobsen said that wasn’t on his mind
‘‘There was a lot of talk about it’’ he said
"But I’m happy with how my season’s gone
I just wish it had ended better
I’ll just go into the playoffs, and hope it goes better’’

In his previous start against Akron, Jacobsen took a shutout into the ninth inning before settling for a 5-3 win over the Aeros
‘‘The last outing was probably the best I felt all year, with my mechanics and all’’ he said
‘‘But tonight was a struggle from the first inning on
When I can’t locate my fastball, it’s going to be a long night’’

Around the Curve
Leiper said he would know his starting rotation for the playoffs after today’s regular-season finale with the Baysox
Curve center fielder and leadoff batter Nyger Morgan will test his injured hamstring prior to today’s game - Morgan is on the disabled list and has been listed as questionable for the playoffs
Bowie holds a 9-7 series advantage over the Curve and has won seven of the twelve meetings at BCB
