Game Reports
The Curve fell to the Harrisburg Senators by
the score of 3-2 at Commerce Bank Ballpark on Thursday evening
LHP Mike Connolly (7-7) suffered the loss for the Curve after
allowing three runs on seven hits, while walking two and striking
out three through his seven innings of work
Nyjer Morgan was the offensive catalyst going 2-for-4 including
his first home run since joining Altoona in June
The Altoona Curve wasted no time getting on the scoreboard on
Thursday night, as Morgan started the game with a lead-off home
run to give Altoona the early 1-0 edge
It looked as though they would tack on more runs in the frame
when the Curve loaded the bases with nobody out, but they were
unable to get another run home
Harrisburg answered quickly, scoring twice in their first at bat
to take a 2-1 lead, but the Curve used their second long ball
of the game, this one off the bat of Ray Sadler, to draw even
at 2-2, in the third
The see-saw scoring continued in the fourth as Harrisburg manufactured
a run courtesy of Seth Bynums lead off double before a sac
bunt and a sac fly scored the go ahead run to put Harrisburg in
front 3-2
That is how the game would end, as Harrisburg relievers Daniel
Foli and Gerald Plexico held the Curve to only three hits through
the final six innings to close out the win for the Senators
The Curve will look to rebound on Friday evening in the second
game of four with the Senators before returning to Blair County
Ballpark for the final eight games of the 2006 regular season
RHP Wardell Starling (4-3, 2.83) will toe the rubber for the Curve
and he will be opposed by southpaw Matt Chico (1-0, 3.94) for
the Senators
Marcos Yepez went 2-for-3 with an RBI and a
run scored as Harrisburg edged Altoona, 3-2, on Wednesday at Commerce
Bank Ballpark
Yepez tripled and scored in the first inning and snapped a 2-2
tie in the fourth with a sacrifice fly
Kory Casto went 2-for-4 with a triple and an RBI for the Senators
(60-70), while Seth Bynum smacked two doubles and scored a run
Harrisburg reliever Daniel Foli (5-1) picked up the win with three
scoreless innings
He allowed two hits and a walk while striking out four
Zechry Zinicola tossed a perfect ninth for his second save
The Curve (71-58) scored their runs on solo homers
Nyjer Morgan belted his first homer in the first and Ray Sadler
slugged his fifteenth in the third
Altoona starter Michael Connolly (7-7) yielded three runs on seven
hits and two walks in six innings
The Curve continue to limp toward the finish
line as their comfort margin continues to become more uncomfortable
Altoona, which has lost five of six, blew a golden opportunity
just minutes into Thursday nights game and paid dearly as
Harrisburg posted a 3-2 win at Commerce Bank Park
The Curves magic number to clinch a playoff berth remains
at eight, and Reading closed to within four games in the standings
with a win at Connecticut
Nyjer Morgan homered leading off the game, then the Curve went
on to load the bases with no outs on a double by Brian Bixler
and walks by Andrew McCutchen and Simon Pond
Altoona had a chance to blow the game open, but instead saw the
momentum disappear as it failed to produce another run in the
inning
Ray Sadler struck out swinging, Javier Guzman flew out to short
center field and Brant Ust grounded out to shortstop
Harrisburg trailed 1-0, but as is often the case, the Senators
used that escape as a springboard to their own big inning
Harrisburg battered Mike Connolly with a leadoff triple by Marcos
Yepez and RBI double by Frank Diaz
A walk to Robert Fick and single by Prentice Redman loaded the
bases with no outs, and Kory Castos groundout scored Diaz
for a 2-1 lead
Connolly minimized the damage by holding the Senators to two runs,
but the home team still had the momentum edge
The Curve also left the bases loaded in the second inning and
stranded twelve runners on the night
Ray Sadler pulled Altoona even with a solo homer in the third,
but the Curve offense fizzled after that
Harrisburg was going with a bullpen day, and four Senators relievers
combined to limit Altoona to two runs
Harrisburg manufactured the decisive run in the fourth off Connolly
(7-7)
Seth Bynum led off with a double, moved to third on a sacrifice
bunt by Daniel Foli and scored on Yepezs sacrifice fly
Foli (5-1) tossed three scoreless innings for the win, and Zechry
Zinicola worked the ninth for his second save
The Senators beat Altoona on Thursday night
3-2 in front of 4,280 at Commerce Bank Park
Thursday night was game one of a four-game series that will conclude
the home portion of the 2006 schedule
Alex Morales made a spot start for the Senators and gave up a
lead off home run to Nyjer Morgan to give Altoona 1-0 lead
Altoona went on to load the bases with no outs, but Morales was
able to pitch out of the trouble without giving up anymore runs
The Senators scored twice in the bottom of the first to take a
2-1
Marcos Yepez tripled to lead off the bottom of the inning and
then Frank Diaz doubled him in to tie the game
Eventually the Sens loaded the bases and then Kory Casto drove
in Diaz on a ground out
Altoona tied the game in the third when Ray Sadler homered leading
off the inning to tie the game at 2-2
But the Sens came right back in the bottom of the fourth to take
a 3-2 lead when Yepez drove in Seth Bynum with a sacrifice fly
Bynum had a big night with two doubles
Yepez and Casto both had two hits as well
Dan Foli picked up the win going three innings and Zechry Zinicola
earned his second save as a Senator, pitching a scoreless ninth
inning
Game two of the series is Friday night at 6.35pm
The Senators will send Matt Chico to the mound against RHP Wardell
Starling
