Email from Brett
Well, it's Sunday night
now and things are going okay
I've had a big improvement in two days and hopefully by maybe
the last day here - Wednesday 16th August - I will be ready to
play
I really can't say though
What's likely to happen is that I will say I am ready, and because
it's a day before the off-day on Thursday, they will just say
take two more days just to make sure
Don't put this anywhere on the web, but Tim Leiper wants me to
tell him when I am ready, not the trainers
Just me - so I am guessing that means he wants me back soon
We didn't do too well today!! - and haven't done well for a little
while now
If we struggle here I will make sure I am back for Harrisburg
series
Definitely not playing in the double header tomorrow - no chance!!
I was only coaching at first base because we had no-one else
Game Reports
The Curve managed just four hits and eight
baserunners in a 12-0 loss at New Britain on Sunday, the most
lopsided shutout defeat in franchise history
Things got off to a bad start for the Curve after allowing two
runs in the bottom of the first inning and got rockier after that
The Cats would add another run in the third, four in the
fourth and five more runs in the seventh inning
Altoona starter Mike Connolly fell to 1-3 since being sent down
from Indianapolis (AAA) on July 5, allowing seven runs on six
hits and five walks in five innings
The Curve pitching staff would combine to issue a total of nine
walks, the most in any game this season
Danny Matienzo was the hero for New Britain, finishing the game
3-for-3 with two home runs and five RBI
The Rock Cats first baseman added to his teams 2-0
advantage with a solo homer in the third inning before blasting
a grand slam in the fourth to put the game out of reach
New Britains starter, Kevin Slowey, had a dominating outing,
surrendering just two hits in seven innings to go along with seven
strikeouts
At one point, Slowey retired twelve Curve batters in a row, before
pitching out of a bases-loaded jam in the sixth frame
The loss, coupled with a Reading Phillies victory, put the Curve
just 5-1/2 games ahead of the R-Phils for the Southern Divisions
wild card playoff berth
The Phillies have won six games in a row and shaved 4-1/2 games
off of the Curves double-digit lead in the last six days
Altoona had two quality chances to get on the scoreboard, loading
the bases in both the sixth and ninth innings
Those were the only two innings that the Curve earned base hits,
collecting four singles on the afternoon
Romulo Sanchez was the only Curve hurler that kept the Rock Cats
off of the scoreboard, pitching the final 1-1/3 scoreless innings
James Johnson sent down New Britain in the sixth, his first inning
of relief of Connolly, but gave up five runs on four hits and
two walks in the seventh before being spelled by Sanchez
The Curve will look to rebound after dropping their second straight
series with a double-header on Monday against the Connecticut
Defenders at 6.05pm at Dodd Stadium
The Curve will send the Pittsburgh Pirates John Van Benschoten
to the mound in Game One against the Defenders James Garcia
Van Benschoten is making a rehabilitation start after missing
much of this season due to shoulder injuries
In the night cap, the Defenders will start Jason Waddell against
a yet-to-be-named pitcher from Altoona

Vic Buttler, Simon Pond, Javier Guzman and Milver Reyes were the
only Curve players to earn base hits, with each player collecting
a single

Jay Sawatski added two shutout innings in relief
For Altoona, starter Michael Connolly (7-6) was knocked around
for seven runs on six hits and five walks in five innings

one in which they have stomached more blows than they have delivered
Altoona followed a dramatic fourteen inning victory on Saturday
night with an embarrassing loss Sunday afternoon, a 12-0 whitewash
at the hands of the Rock Cats at New Britain Stadium
It was the most lopsided shutout defeat in franchise history
Altoona has lost four of its last five, witnessing its worst bullpen
meltdown and one of its shakiest outings by a starting pitcher
in that span
Sundays thrashing, coupled with a Reading victory, withered
the Curves lead over the third-place R-Phils to 5-1/2 games
In the last six days, Reading has sliced 4-1/2 games off what
once was a ten game cushion
