The Altoona Curve defeated the Harrisburg Senators in dramatic fashion Tuesday night, winning 3-2 in ten innings at Blair County Ballpark

Catcher Dave Parrish delivered the walk-off RBI with a one out sacrifice fly to right field, scoring second baseman Brandon Chaves from third
The throw from Senator right fielder Prentice Redman beat Chaves to the plate by five steps - however, Chaves used an elusive slide to avoid the sprawling catcher's tag attempt before crawling back towards home plate for the winning run

With two outs in the ninth inning and the Curve facing a 2-0 shutout loss, pinch-hitter Simon Pond connected for a game-tying, two-run double to right-center field

The extra-base hit not only excited the Curve bench, but also the ecstatic Curve crowd of over 7,000

The Senators struck first on Tuesday night, scoring a rare first-inning run against Curve starter Shane Youman
Harrisburg second baseman Dan Dement doubled and later scored off the bat of Redman
It was only the second time Youman has allowed a first inning run in eleven starts this year

Youman, who was facing his first loss since May 20, was taken off the hook when the Curve forced extra innings
The southpaw lasted seven strong innings, allowing two runs on five hits, while striking out five and walking none

Harrisburg starter David Maust pitched well enough to win, but his 7-1/3 shutout innings were not enough because of the Curve's late rally
The left-hander allowed only five hits on two walks and two strikeouts

Brandon Knight picked up the win for the Curve, his second of the year, after throwing a perfect tenth inning

Harrisburg and Altoona will play the third and final game of the series tomorrow in a special 12.00 noon start as part of 'Super Splash Day' at the ballpark
Landon Jacobsen (10-7, 3.10) will take the mound for the Curve against Senator right-hander Ryan Drese

Fans can expect a ‘Wet and Wild’ time tomorrow afternoon at Blair County Ballpark!!

Down in the ninth, 2-0, Parrish and Javier Guzman ripped singles to put runners on the corners
Simon Pond's two-out double drove them in

After the Senators were shut down by reliever Brandon Knight (2-5) in the top of the tenth, Brandon Chaves led off the bottom of the frame with a double and moved to third on a groundout by Vic Buttler
Brett Roneberg was intentionally walked, and Parrish lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Chaves to give Altoona (59-42) the win

Knight picked up the win with a perfect tenth

Prentice Redman drove in a run in the first and scored on Frank Diaz's single in the seventh to put the Senators (52-51) on top

Harrisburg starter David Maust pitched a five-hit shutout over 7-1/3 innings, striking out two and walking two

Senators fall in extra innings 3-2
Altoona scores twice in the ninth and one in the tenth for win

For the first time this season the Senators lost a game they were leading into the bottom of the ninth inning

Altoona scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the ninth and one in the tenth to beat the Sens 3-2 on Tuesday night in Altoona

David Maust started for the Senators and was outstanding
He went 7.1 innings allowing just five hits and left with a 2-0 lead

Dan Kolb came in behind and finished up the eighth inning as the Sens took a 2-0 lead into the bottom of the ninth

The Senators scored first in the first on an RBI single off the bat of Prentice Redman scoring Dan DeMent

They made it 2-0 in the seventh when Frank Diaz singled in Redman

Redman was the only Senator player with more than one hit in the game as he had two hits

In the bottom of the ninth off of Dan Kolb, Dave Parrish had a lead off single
After Kolb retired the next two batters, Javier Guzman singled Parrish to third
Pinch hitter Simon Pond doubled into the right center field alley tying the game

In the tenth the Senators went in order but not Altoona
Brandon Chaves had a lead off double off of Danny Rueckel
Chaves moved to third on a ground out and after an intentional walk, scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Dave Parrish for the game winner

The two teams play the final game of their three game series on Wednesday afternoon at noon
Ryan Drese will make his third rehab start for the Senators and they will try to keep Altoona from sweeping the series

The game can be heard on 1460 The Ticket and through the Senators website beginning at 11.45am

Senators fall late

With two out in the bottom of the ninth inning, the Harrisburg Senators blew their two-run lead on Altoona

The Curve didn't take long to capitalize, scoring a run in the bottom of the tenth to win the Eastern League baseball matchup 3-2 last night before a big crowd of 7,091 at Blair County Ballpark

David Parrish led off the bottom of the ninth with a single off Senators reliever Dan Kolb
He advanced on a groundout and reached third when Javier Guzman singled with two out
Pinch hitter Simon Pond delivered a double to drive in both runs
Pond was stranded when Senators center fielder Frank Diaz caught a ball hit deep by Nyjer Morgan

Altoona reliever Brandon Knight (2-5) retired the Senators in order in the top of the tenth and then the Curve rallied for the win
Brandon Chaves led off the inning with a double and then a groundout by Vic Butler moved him to third
Harrisburg's third reliever Danny Rueckel (4-3), who came on to pitch the tenth, issued an intentional walk to Brett Roneberg
Parrish then launched the sacrifice fly that drove in the game-ending run
The play at the plate was close but Chaves beat the throw to win it for Altoona (59-42)

Harrisburg (52-51) scored a run in the first inning
Dan DeMent doubled and scored on a single by Prentice Redman

David Maust pitched well for Harrisburg to preserve the lead before the Senators added an insurance run in the seventh
Redman doubled and scored on a single by Diaz

Maust ran into trouble when he allowed two baserunners in the bottom of the eighth
Kolb relieved him and, despite pitching from behind in the count, squeaked out of that jam

But Kolb found troubles of his own in the ninth

Curve fail to give up

Tim Leiper called it “The Play,’’ and the fans that stayed around for the finish of Tuesday night’s Curve-Harrisburg game at Blair County Ballpark no doubt will remember it for a long time

Using a nifty, head-first, dive-slide, Brandon Chaves scored from third base on Dave Parrish’s short sacrifice fly to right field to lift Altoona to a 3-2, ten inning win over the Senators before a crowd of 7,091 at BCB

Chaves opened the bottom of the tenth inning by ripping a double into the gap in right-center
After Vic Buttler’s grounder to second base moved Chaves to third, Brett Roneberg was intentionally walked as the Senators hoped to set up a possible double-play situation for reliever Dan Rueckel with Parrish at the plate
When Parrish punched a short fly ball to right field, Chaves immediately broke for home
Although Prentice Redman’s strong throw was up the third-base line, Chaves appeared to be a dead duck by five feet or more
However, Chaves dove to the right, eluded Harrisburg catcher Josh Emmerick and scrambled back to touch the plate for the game-winner

“Leip (manager Tim Leiper) told me to go on contact’’ Chaves explained in the ecstatic Curve locker room
“When the ball went in the air, he said to get back and tag
At first, he said, ‘No,’ but when the guy was about to catch the ball, he said, ‘Go, go, go’’’

And, “go’’ is what Chaves did

“I saw the catcher in front of the plate, and I had no choice because he was blocking the plate’’ Chaves said
“I had to try and get around him
It was fun’’

Leiper said there was no indecision on whether or not to send Chaves home
“It’s let’s see what we got’’ Leiper said
“They’ve got to catch the ball and make a throw and make the tag, so there was no indecision
But, if I actually had looked where he was, there might have been some indecision because he (Redman) was probably at deep second base not short right field
Chaves was unbelievable, though
I saw Chaves slide by him, and I didn’t see a call
Then I saw him scrambling, just hoping he could scramble quick enough to get back to the plate
It was a great job by Chaves’’

“I didn’t think it (sacrifice fly) was far enough’’ Parrish said “but I was hoping he’d go anyway’’

The exciting tenth inning capped a late comeback by the Curve, who trailed 2-0 in the bottom of the ninth
Parrish led off the ninth with a single before Harrisburg reliever Dan Kolb retired the next two batters
Javier Guzman’s third hit of the night set the stage for a two-run, game-tying pinch hit double by Simon Pond

“In that situation, I’m trying to get a pitch over the plate and hit it hard’’ Pond said
“It (win) was nice
It’s good to be in these situations, and in close games, we keep competing’’

Leiper obviously was happy with the win that stretched the Curve’s lead over third-place Harrisburg to eight games
“It doesn’t get more exciting than that’’ Leiper said of the Curve’s comeback victory
“Down to your last out, and having a guy (Pond) come off the bench and pick us up like that - all the little things we did to get to that point
The Guzman hit (a two-out single in the ninth before Pond’s game-tying double) was big to get us to extra innings, and what a great inning it was
The (Chaves) lead-off double, and Buttler did a great job of getting him over, and then ‘The Play’’’

Altoona’s Shane Youman, the Eastern League’s earned-run average leader, and Harrisburg’s David Maust locked up in a strong pitching duel of left-handers
Youman left after seven innings, giving up two runs and five hits
Maust pitched into the eighth, blanking the Curve on five hits

While the Curve took advantage of Harrisburg’s relievers, Altoona got three shutout innings from its bullpen - Chris Hernandez, Jorge Vasquez and Brandon Knight, who pitched the tenth and picked up his second win

“We’ve been facing some tough pitching’’ Parrish said of the Curve’s inability to score many runs recently
“It’s been a battle for us, but we kept plugging and got some big hits tonight’’

Around the Curve
Roneberg’s hit streak ended at six
Parrish has reached base safely in twenty-one of twenty-three games since June 25
