Game Reports
The Curve were limited to just two hits and
Altoona's defense matched a season-high by committing four errors
in being shut out by the Bowie Baysox, 4-0, Saturday night at
Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, MD
Baysox starter Brian Finch worked the first 3-1/3 innings before
leaving the game after a 1 hour 44 minute rain delay, which halted
play in the top of the fourth inning
Beau Hale completed the two-hitter by tossing the final 5-2/3
innings as Bowie picked up their first win of the series after
Altoona won the first two games of the set by scores of 1-0 and
9-2
The Curve's only two
hits came on singles by Brian Bixler and Brett Roneberg in the
first and ninth innings, respectively
Altoona starter Mike Connolly (6-5) allowed a pair of runs to
Bowie in the bottom of the third inning before being forced out
of the game due to the lengthy delay
The left-hander was tagged with his second loss in three starts
since being sent down from Triple-A Indianapolis prior to the
Eastern League All-Star Break
Reliever Ron Chiavacci proved to be the lone bright spot in the
Curve loss, striking out nine batters in five innings of relief
The nine punchouts are the most by any Curve relief pitcher in
a single game
Chiavacci allowed unearned runs to the Baysox in both the fourth
and sixth innings
The loss, coupled with Akron's doubleheader split at Harrisburg,
dropped the Curve (57-41) to 1-1/2 games out of first place in
the E.L. South
The Curve will look to complete a series victory on Sunday night
as they send right-hander Wardell Starling (2-1, 3.07) to the
mound against Bowie lefty Garrett Olson (2-2, 4.35)
First pitch is set for 6.05pm
Brian Finch and Beau Hale combined to toss
a two hit shutout of the Altoona Curve Saturday night in Bowie
as the Baysox won a wet one 4-0 in front of 7,521
In the bottom of the third, Pete Shier slapped a single through
the hole into right field and advanced to second on Todd Donovan's
perfectly placed bunt single between the right side of the mound
and the first baseman
With speed on the bags, Bryan Bass laid down a beautiful bunt
to third base but third baseman Brandon Chaves threw the ball
in the dirt allowing Shier to score from second and putting both
Donovan and Bass in scoring position with no outs
Cory Keylor followed with a sacrifice fly to deep center field
to knock in Donovan with the second run of the inning
After an 1:44 rain delay and an interim fireworks show, the two
teams reconvened to resume the game with Hale throwing for the
Baysox and Ron Chiavacci for Altoona
Three poorly played plays by the Curve defense led to another
Baysox run in the fourth but Chiavacci was able to settle down
and strike out the side with the bases loaded to quell the Baysox
threat
The bad defense continued for the Curve in the sixth as both Gera
Alvarez and Donovan reached safely on balls that skirted beneath
the Altoona defense
Donovan's grounder scooted beneath thrid baseman Chaves' glove
and into left field allowing Alvarez to score from third base
with the Baysox fourth run of the evening
Hale returned in the top of the ninth for his sixth inning of
work and retired the side to pick up his second win of the season
after working six strong innings
Baysox manager Don Werner said after the game, "It's huge
to win this game for us, because we suffered through three straight
losses
We didn't hit the ball extremely well, but we took advantage of
their errors and created some runs"

Altoona stumbled to a 4-0 loss against the Baysox at Prince Georges
Stadium on Saturday night, no thanks to some porous defense and
struggling offense
The Curve committed four errors that led to three unearned runs,
while their hitters managed only two hits
The game was interrupted in the top of the fourth inning by a
rain delay of 1 hour 44 minutes
Bowie seized a 2-0 lead in the third inning against Altoona starter
Mike Connolly (6-5)
With two runners on and none out, Brandon Chaves fielded a bunt
down the third base line and threw the ball away to allow the
first run to score
Cory Keylors sacrifice fly chased home another runner
Connolly finished with a line of two runs allowed - one earned
- on three hits and one walk in three innings
The left-hander did not strike out a batter and suffered his first
loss in ten career starts against the Baysox
Connolly remained in a tie with teammate Landon Jacobsen atop
Altoonas all-time wins list
Jacobsen earned his twenty-sixthth win in a Curve uniform against
Bowie Friday night
Ron Chiavacci relieved Connolly after the rain delay and threw
away another bunt in the fourth inning to stretch the Baysox lead
to 3-0
Bowie tacked on it's final run in the fifth inning off Chaves
fielding error, his second of the night
Chiavacci tied a team season-high with nine strikeouts in only
five innings
Beau Hale (2-2) earned the win with 5-2/3 innings of one-hit ball
in relief
Brian Finch and Beau Hale combined on a two-hitter
as Bowie blanked Altoona, 4-0, on Saturday night at Prince George's
Stadium
Finch gave up one hit, struck out three and walked two over 3-1/3
innings before the game was interrupted by a 1 hour 44 minute
rain delay
Hale (2-2) took the mound with one on and one out in the fourth
and retired the first nine batters he faced
He kept the Curve (57-41) hitless until the ninth
Brett Roneberg hit a
one-out single and stole second but was thrown out at third as
David Parrish grounded into a force play
As the rain continued, Hale induced a game-ending groundout by
Brandon Chaves to seal the Baysox's tenth shutout
The 27-year-old right-hander gave up one hit while striking out
five and walking three over 5-2/3 innings as Bowie (43-53) snapped
a three-game slide
After Peter Shier scored in the third on an errant throw by third
baseman Chaves, Cory Keylor's sacrifice fly plated the only earned
run for the Baysox
Leo Daigle scored in the fourth on a throwing error by reliever
Ron Chiavacci and Gerardo Alvarez came home in the sixth on Chaves'
second miscue
Chiavacci replaced starter Michael Connolly (6-5) after the rain
delay and struck out nine over five innings, setting a franchise
record for relievers
Brian Bixler had the other hit for Altoona, which had a three-game
winning streak stopped, singling with one out in the first
