Game Reports
Landon Jacobsen tossed six strong innings to
become the Eastern League's first ten game winner as the Curve
won their second straight game over the Bowie Baysox, 9-2, Friday
night at Prince George's Stadium in Bowie, MD
Jacobsen (10-7) allowed just one run on three hits in six innings,
walking none and striking out four in notching his tenth victory
The 27-year old became the league's first double-digit winner
despite spending eight days at Triple-A Indianapolis in mid-June
With the win, Altoona (57-40) improves to a season-best seventeen
games above the .500 mark and remain just one behind first-place
Akron in the race for the top spot in the E.L. South
Jacobsen was provided three runs of early run support after the
Curve touched up hard-throwing Baysox' right-hander Radhames Liz
in the top of the first inning
The first two runs came home when, with the bases loaded, Bowie
second baseman Pete Shier threw wide of the catcher, allowing
Brian Bixler and Vic Buttler to score
Dave Parrish capped the three-run first with an RBI single to
center
Javier Guzman increased the Curve lead to 4-0 in the top of the
fifth with his sixth longball of the season off Liz
Liz (1-1), who was named Eastern League Pitcher of the Week last
week after shutting out Binghamton over six innings in his Double-A
debut last Saturday, suffered the loss after allowing four runs
on six hits in five innings
After Jacobsen allowed his only run on a fifth-inning solo homer
by Baysox catcher Ryan Hubele, Altoona broke the game open with
four runs in the top of the seventh, aided by three consecutive
walks by Bowie reliever Carlos Jan and a two-run single by Brett Roneberg
Four different Curve hitters enjoyed two-hit efforts in the club's
ten hit attack, including center fielder Vic Buttler, who broke
out of a 2-for-24 post-All Star Game slump by going 2-for-3 with
an RBI, two walks and two runs scored
Bixler, Guzman and Parrish also contributed two hits in the win
Simon Pond was hitless in four at-bats, but picked up three RBI's
in the contest
Altoona will look to make it three straight wins over Bowie Saturday
night as they send left-hander Mike Connolly (6-4, 4.35) to the
mound against Baysox righty Brian Finch (4-9, 3.32)
Game time is set for 7.05pm
Landon Jacobsen became the Eastern League's
first ten game winner, tossing six solid innings in visiting Altoona's
9-2 win over Bowie on Friday
Jacobsen (10-7) allowed a run on three hits, striking out four
without issuing a walk
The 27-year-old right-hander retired the first eight batters he
faced before Peter Shier ripped a two-out double to right in the
third
Chris Hernandez yielded a run and a hit over the next two frames
before Matt Peterson worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the Curve (57-40),
who jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first and never looked back
Javier Guzman homered, doubled and scored twice and Simon Pond
drove in three runs for Altoona, which won its third in a row
Ryan Hubele went 2-for-3 with a homer and two RBIs for the Baysox
(42-53), who dropped their third straight
Radhames Liz (1-1) took the loss in his second Double-A start
after surrendering four runs on six hits and three walks with
five strikeouts in five innings
The weather was great for baseball Friday night
in Bowie but the Baysox defense was not as Radhames Liz was victimized
by a first inning throwing error which lead to three runs and
poor defense, putting the Baysox in a tight bind
It was all Altoona needed as the visitors took game two from the
Baysox 9-2 in front of 5,190 Friday evening in Bowie
After loading the bases in the top of the first, Altoona jumped
out quickly to a 3-0 lead on a ground ball to second baseman Pete
Shier who tried to save the run at the plate but made a poor throw,
allowing two runs to score
David Parrish followed with an RBI single into center field that
scored Simon Pond from second with the third run of the game
Altoona added a fourth run in the 5th inning on a Javier Guzman
solo home run to right-center before Ryan Hubele (pictured) finally
put the Baysox on the board in the fifth with his fifth home run
of the season, a straight shot down the the left field line off
Landon Jacobsen
Altoona tacked on four more in the seventh inning while Hubele
could only gain one back with an RBI double to left-center
After loading the bases, Richard Stahl walked in a run in the
Altoona ninth as the Baysox dropped their fifty-third game this
season

He struck out four and lowered his ERA to 3.10
Altoona's hitters were equally impressive, tagging Bowie starter

the fifth inning, his sixth of the season

The first baseman padded his team-leading RBI total to sixty
Vic Buttler busted out of a 2-for-24 slump with two hits
In the fifth inning, the outfielder whacked a two-out shot double
to center but was thrown out at third trying for his fifteenth
triple of the season
Buttler reached base safely in all five of his plate appearances,
as he also walked twice and reached on an error
The Baysox didn't dent the scoreboard until the fifth inning,
