Game Reports
One swing of the bat from Brandon Chaves provided
all the offense the Curve would need on Thursday night, as Altoona
defeated the Bowie Baysox at Prince George Stadium, 1-0
Shane Youman lowered his league-leading ERA to 1.43 with seven
shutout innings and a career-high nine strikeouts
Chaves lifted a home run to left field with one out in the second
inning to score the only run of the game and provide the winning
margin for the Curve
Youman (7-2), who has now won his last six decisions, pitched
brilliantly for Altoona, fanning nine batters and allowing just
four hits and no runs in seven full innings pitched
The All-Star left-hander has now surrendered just five earned
runs in his last seven starts
Brandon Knight struck out two of the three batters he faced in
the ninth inning to pick up his nineteenth save of the year
Bowie starter Eric Dubose lost his first decision of the season,
allowing just one run on four hits and striking out six in seven
innings
The Curve threatened to add to their lead in both the fifth and
seventh innings, placing runners at second and third base, but
were unable to pad their lead
The slim one-run victory marked the ninth shutout win of the season
for Altoona
The Baysox and Curve continue their series on Friday night at
7.05pm
Landon Jacobsen (9-7, 3.21) will start for Altoona against Bowies
Radhames Liz (1-0, 0.00)
Shane Youman hurled seven dominant innings
and Brandon Chaves homered as Altoona squeezed past Bowie, 1-0,
on Thursday night at Prince George's Stadium
Youman (7-2) scattered four hits while walking two and striking
out a season-high nine
The 26-year-old left-hander lowered his ERA to 1.43 and won his
seventh straight decision
Jorge Vasquez tossed a hitless eighth, and Brandon Knight worked
a perfect ninth to earn his nineteenth save
After Simon Pond led off the top of the second with a groundout,
Chaves produced the game's lone run with a blast to left field
Brett Roneberg's first-inning
double was the only other extra-base hit for the Curve (56-40)
The teams combined for eight hits and went 0-for-13 with runners
in scoring position
Eric DuBose (4-1) suffered the hard-luck loss, giving up a run
on four hits and two walks while fanning six over seven innings
His ERA dipped to 1.79 in eleven appearances with the Baysox
Noah Hall went 2-for-4 with a stolen base for Bowie (42-52)
Altoona's Brandon Chaves hit a solo home run
in the second inning and Shane Youman struck out nine Baysox batters
as the Curve stole game one 1-0 in front of 5,143 fans Thursday
evening
Youman, who has the Eastern League's best 1.43 ERA took the hill
against LHP Eric DuBose, who is second among EL current starters
with a 1.79 ERA in a classic pitchers' duel
The two southpaws combined for fifteen strikeouts and just four
walks as both hurlers went seven complete
After Chaves' solo shot in the second, the Baysox had runners
at third base in both the fifth and the seventh but Youman held
his ground and ended both threats unscathed
Brandon Knight retired three straight Baysox in the bottom of
the ninth to pick up his nineteenth save of the season
Only one of the two starting pitchers Thursday
night could boast of having fifty-two games of major league experience
under his belt, but it was hard to tell which one
Shane Youman outdueled his Bowie counterpart, former big leaguer
Eric Dubose, to lead the Curve to a 1-0 victory at Prince Georges
Stadium
Youman established a new career high with nine strikeouts over
seven dominant innings and combined with two relievers on a four-hitter
The leftys strikeout total represented the highest any Altoona
pitcher has accumulated this season
Youman (7-2) also lowered his league-leading ERA to a miniscule
1.43
A scout who recently visited Blair County Ballpark attributed
Youmans success this season to his ability to get opposing
hitters to swing and miss at his slider and changeup, something
he failed to do consistently last year
Youman showed that ability early on in Thursdays game, registering
all his strikeouts in the first four innings
He didnt allow a ball out of the infield until the sixth
inning and surrendered just four hits - two of them infield singles
- and two walks
Brandon Chaves homered with one out in the second inning to give
Youman all the run support he would need
DuBose (4-1) suffered his first loss of the season, despite pitching
seven solid innings
DuBose allowed just one run on four hits and two walks, while
striking out six
Brandon Knight picked up his nineteenth save with a perfect ninth
inning for the Curve
The only threat the Baysox mounted against Youman came in the
fifth inning
Youman issued a leadoff walk and fielded the ensuing bunt cleanly,
only to hurl the ball high over the head of infielder Javier Guzman,
who was covering second base
That left runners on second and third with no outs, but Youman
induced harmless groundouts from the next three batters to wiggle
out of trouble
