Two Curve pitchers combined to hold Erie to just three hits in the Curve’s 7-1 victory over the SeaWolves Monday night at Jerry Uht Park

Ron Chiavacci threw seven strong innings and retired twenty-one of the twenty-five men he faced, surrendering just a second-inning single on the way to his first victory in an Altoona uniform

Altoona took three of four games against the SeaWolves and finished their seven-game roadtrip 4-3

The Curve are now just 1-1/2 games out of first place behind the Akron Aeros in the Southern Division

A fielding error by first baseman Kelly Hunt, his first of two in the inning, allowed Brett Roneberg to reach base as the Curve began their second at-bat, and opened the door for Altoona to score three times in the frame
Hunt’s second miscue, coupled with a pair of doubles by Brandon Chaves and Dave Parrish, gave the Curve the early 3-0 lead

Chiavacci (1-2) steamrolled through the SeaWolves’ lineup, piling up eight strikeouts and retiring the final seventeen men that he faced
The right-hander completed seven innings of work and only allowed one hit, a single to Jackson Melian in the bottom of the second

Melian would score an unearned run later that inning after a throwing error by Simon Pond extended the frame

Like Chiavacci, Erie starter Jair Jurrjens (3-1) did not allow an earned run but still lost his first decision of the season after surrendering four hits and two walks in five innings

Dave Parrish continued his tremendous series against the ‘Wolves, finishing the game 2-for-5 with two doubles and two RBI
Playing in three of the four games against Erie, Parrish completed the series 7-for-11 with a triple, two doubles, and four RBI

Curve shortstop Brian Bixler launched his second homerun of the season, a two-run blast in the seventh inning that followed Nyjer Morgan’s lead-off triple

Franklin Perez threw the final two innings for Altoona, keeping the SeaWolves off of the scoreboard and allowing two hits

Monday’s game was the final contest for both teams before the Eastern League breaks for the 2006 UPMC Health Plan All-Star Game at Blair County Ballpark in Altoona on Wednesday at 7.45pm

Chiavacci shuts down 'Wolves

Ron Chiavacci allowed one hit over seven innings as visiting Altoona beat Erie, 7-1, on Monday

Chiavicci (1-2) gave up an unearned run, walked two and struck out eight to snap a personal two-game losing streak
The lone hit he yielded came on Jackson Melian's single in the second inning

Franklin Perez allowed two hits over the final two frames

Brian Bixler hit a two-run homer and scored twice for the Curve (52-36), who have won four of five

Jair Jurrjens (3-1) took the loss after surrendering three unearned runs on four hits while striking out three and walking two in five innings

Melian finished 2-for-4 and Mike Rabelo had the other hit for the SeaWolves (37-50) who have lost four of five

Chiavacci dominates last-place SeaWolves

The Curve head into the All-Star break playing their best ball of the year
Altoona improved to a season-high sixteen games over .500 Monday night with a 7-1 win over Erie at Jerry Uht Park

The Curve have been fifteen games over .500 six previous times and failed to get over that hump, but they finally did Monday, thanks in large part to Ron Chiavacci
The right-hander dominated the SeaWolves, firing a one-hitter over seven innings

Chiavacci allowed a leadoff single in the second that led to a run, then retired the final seventeen batters he faced
Chiavacci (1-2) finished with eight strikeouts and two walks to earn his first Curve win

Reliever Franklin Perez closed things out with two shutout innings, running his scoreless streak to 15-1/3 frames
Perez allowed two hits, so the Curve staff finished with a three-hitter

Altoona’s offense took control with three runs in the second inning and scored four runs late to pull away

Brian Bixler belted his second homer since coming up from Single-A Lynchburg, smacking a two-run shot in the seventh for a 6-1 edge

Dave Parrish doubled home a run and scored on Brandon Chaves’ double in the second inning

The Curve also got a run thanks to an error

Jackson Melian singled to center field opening Erie’s half of the second inning for the lone hit allowed by Chiavacci
Melian later scored on a throwing error by first baseman Simon Pond

Parrish ripped another RBI double in the sixth inning

Brett Roneberg doubled in Bixler in the ninth for Altoona’s final run

SeaWolves starter Jair Jurrjens (3-1) gave up three runs - none earned - to take the loss

Erie, in last place in the Southern Division, is only 15-29 at home and has won just six of its last twenty-three games at Uht Park
The SeaWolves are 22-21 on the road, though, and will be the Curve’s opponent for four games at Blair County Ballpark coming out of the All-Star break
